Gloucestershire v Derbyshire Metro Bank Cup preview

Mickey Arthur has announced a squad of 13 for tomorrow's game against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham, to start the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

New signings Matt Montgomery, Amrit Basra and Rory Haydon are in the squad and will logically play, but for the first time that I can remember, I could make a case for everyone being in the final eleven. Both Anuj Dal and Martin Andersson are in the squad, as is Joe Hawkins, but so too are Nick Potts and Yousaf Bin Naeem, who will want good performances in this competition with their contracts up at the end of the summer.

The Derbyshire squad:

Guest, Jewell, Came, Montgomery, Basra, Bin Naeem, Andersson, Dal, Whiteley, Hawkins, Aitchison, Haydon, Potts

Ross Whiteley probably needs a good tournament to make his case for a contract next year. The ones with nothing to prove are Andersson, Dal (who it is good to see back) and Aitchison, but their experience will be important. You can make your own minds up!

Our hosts will be without three seamers - Marchant de Lange, Ajeet Singh Dale and David Payne, as well as Miles Hammond, all at the Hundred. Chris Dent has retired but Cameron Bancroft is available, asking with new rookie signing, Kamran Dhariwal

Are I write, there is no news on their squad, but I will add it if announced later.

As always, your thoughts are welcome. The forecast is good and if the right Derbyshire side turns up, they can acquit themselves well.

Here's hoping...

Postscript: Gloucestershire squad -

Bancroft, Shaw, Van Buuren, Charlesworth, Taylor, Akhtar, Phillips, Bracey, Miles, Taylor, Middleton, Price, Boorman, Ahmed

I think I'd leave Bin Naeem and Haydon out of that thirteen. Looks a decent side on paper but therein lies the problem

  3. Any idea why Wagstaff isn't in the squad? Is he injured?

    1. He was injured in the friendly against Bedfordshire. Hasn't played since, though I am unsure of the problem.

I think we will probably have one of the stronger squads in the competition. And after a awful t20 and no chance now of promotion in the championship we should be going all out to get to at least the semi finals. I think our team and game is probably suited more to 50 over cricket then the other 2 formats so it might be a good few weeks. Also no pearls of wisdom from mr Arthur to listen to

    1. My concern is the attack, Ian. They could be chasing big totals if Ben doesn't take early wickets

    2. Quite possibly but you never know. Do you know Steve what’s happened to Sam conners this season. I noticed he’d played a couple of second team games for Durham but that’s about it. His promising career seems to be going downhill very quickly

    3. He was injured preseason and didn't play second team until June. He has only had one match for the first team and you would have to say the move hasn't worked out for him at this stage. Maybe next year will be better for him

  5. Looking forward to the younger lads getting their chance throughout the competition. Hopefully they all get a decent go so we can see what they’ve got.

Absolutely zero point picking Whiteley in this, it's a development level competition. Dal to rotate in.

  7. I'm inclined to agree, Hamez. But suspect that MA at this stage will see it as an opportunity to get some wins. We will see soon enough

  8. I've noticed that our 2 championship wins this season, both included Pat Brown in the team. We definitely need a pace option next season. Kasey Aldridge is maybe Durham bound? Kris

  9. Potts and Whiteley to miss out for me….the former is just too expensive and the latter will get in the way of one of the youngsters coming through. On paper the side looks quite exciting. Grant from Telford

  10. That looks a reasonable squad especially with the batting looking strong. The bowling though looks weak without Chappell and Reece. I understand the absence of Zak and hopefully he’s back soon but Reece “ rested” ? I’m of the opinion that we should be going all out to win this trophy. We’ve won naff all over the years ( 32 years since our last trophy ) whilst our contemporaries Leics, Glos, Glamorgan and Northamptonshire have all won trophies recently. Not good enough to say this is a development cup. What are we “ resting “ Reece for ? We aren’t going up. Where is Morley ! Very worrying for him if he can’t get in this squad? Is this more evidence of more muddled MA team selection?
Also I do think Dal has a lot to prove at the moment. He’s had a poor season with the bat ( again ) and his bowling stats aren’t good. After an initial brilliant season under MA he’s gone backwards. We need to get off to a strong start to keep interest especially with our home games being back loaded. It would be nice to go into the last game ( Essex) still in contention

    1. Reece was injured again at Northampton, Paul, probably a consequence of coming back from a hamstring injury, then being asked to bowl 32 overs...Morley missed that game with injury so I assume he still is. I agree about Nuj, he has had fairly average season.

  11. Why isnt Anuj Dall playing and why was he left out of the last 2 championship games..in my view he is such a valuable player..Does anyone know what they are playing at?

    1. He has been missing for 'personal reasons' and injury. I can only assume he isn't yet fully fit but is being integrated back into the group

  12. As someone who has decided to do Cheltenham and Neath (2 new grounds for me) i had only a little optimism before start of play. Bowling looks weak especially now we know Dal isn't playing. Still we are only 24 overs in the sun is out the Abbey looks beautiful and now we have a new man at the crease. What's not to like John Flint

    1. It's a lovely ground John. New players to watch and fascinating for that reason alone. Young attack always likely for struggle against this batting side but as you say, the sun is shining!

You called it Steve, bowling attack pathetically weak

    1. For the record, I said it was inexperienced and this is effectively the Gloucs first team. Not unexpected..

  14. 300 is about the par score in 50 ovrrs these days so don't think we've bowled terribly especially given it's a smaller ground etc. I'm posting this with half a dozen overs to go mind...

    1. I messaged a friend earlier and said I thought 350 was likely on this ground and with an inexperienced attack. They won't be far away and less is a bonus for me

    2. Agreed. At this level players like Bracey will give you some tap at times. The test is how you bounce back and Potts last couple overs were tighter to his credit.

Big test for the batting as the Glos attack is very decent but there is nobody they should be frightened of so chasing 350 is possible.
