As we leave, Derbyshire are 46-3 and facing an innings defeat, a somewhat bizarre occurrence after the optimism of day one.
There are many talking points that I will address at the end of the match, but please add your comments on the day's play below.
Today must be the low point in a generally poor season. One of many under the current HOC.

The pitch didn’t offer much, and probably the kookaburra doesn’t help, but the fact we thought Aitchison bowling off breaks was our best route to a wicket after lunch summed up how much cutting edge there was in our attack. Feels like our pacers have gone backwards this year, and there’s no depth in our squad to challenge anyone for a place. A question for the coaches really, have any quick bowlers got better in the last couple of years? Feels like most have stagnated or declined.
ReplyDeleteCollapse in the evening felt inevitable after 155 in the dirt watching Northants grind us out of the game. Shame as I arrived at the ground thinking that if someone could get hold of the game and grab a few quick wickets we were in a good position to force a win that would put us back in the promotion mix.
We've had some bad days lately Peakfan but this one takes 1st prize! How can we make such a mess of it after finishing day 1 in a position of strength. It's the people who support them through thick and thin(mainly thin) that I feel sorry for. We've had to suffer this rubbish for way too long and surely something has to change Mickeys had plenty of time to build a winning side here but he's failed miserably and we really need a complete refresh at the club.Topspinner
ReplyDeleteEven by Derbyshire standards this was hideous.
ReplyDeleteHow they could allow anyone to go from 154 for 5 to 550 for 9 beggars belief.
The following batting display would have come as no surprise to anyone.
I suppose MA will get a 12 month extension to his contract on the back of this.
My gruntle is dissed!
After praising the side for the first two days and trying to find the positives today was shocking. We seemed to completely give up in the field for the last 25- 30 overs which although wrong was maybe a little understandable considering how long we were out there. But then the batting and the incredible decision to open with Chappell and then after that use Hawkins as night watchman meaning Donald in the team as a batsman and centurion Anderson will bat 7 and 8 seriously makes you wonder if Derbyshire are even taking the championship seriously anymore. I was previously in the give mickey Arthur the benefit of doubt camp but now I’m not so sure. A absolutely abysmal days cricket
ReplyDeleteI shared your surprise at Zak, but Wayne's statement at the end of the day clarified it. Personal issues to deal with - and he is entitled to privacy and the time to sort things.
DeleteRegressing at an alarming rate. Gutted we have MA for another two seasons, he needs to go
ReplyDeleteOne more year after this one, CB. At this stage...
DeleteFeeling dejected at the moment. Really thought we had turned the corner in the championship but these last 3 games have been very disappointing.
ReplyDeleteWe are a poor side that lacks quality and depth. We haven’t the armoury in our attack to bowl teams out and are liable to batting collapses when put under pressure. But as Derbyshire fans we should be used to it by now. A disappointed Grant from Telford
ReplyDeleteDisappointing performance yesterday after fighting hard for 2 days. I wouldn't be so critical on this occasion, having to go in to the game without our first choice spinners, on a pitch clearly prepared for their overseas leg spinner. Relying on a rookie 18 year old was always a tough ask, but at least we have seen promise from him for the future.
ReplyDeleteChances of promotion (if there is any) are over, now we can concentrate on the cup!
I think the team's heads have visibly dropped. The team look deflated and demoralised and you'll never get their best whilst it's like that.
ReplyDeleteThe abysmal Blast campaign seems to have derailed our season unfortunately.
This isn't the first time we've seen this under MA, remember Lloyd looking a broken man by the end of last season. It's horrible to see not just because of the results but because the mental health of these young men is taking a battering.
Dreadful performance yesterday. Our bowlers looked jaded. And why on earth was Aitchison bowling spin? It seemed like village cricket.
ReplyDeleteBarring some remarkable batting today, we are heading for our third successive thrashing.
We had a very promising start to the season but, with this squad and lack of depth, it was never realistically going to last. I would urge caution in criticising Mickey Arthur. Who else is going to come in and turn this squad into promotion contenders? With their budget, Derbyshire are always going to be underdogs and, as fans, we must be realistic in terms of our achievements and overseas recruitment. Our good players are always going to be sought after by other counties - Critchley, du Plooy, F H-P, etc. And other counties are allowed to play well against us. To the future, and Harry Moore back for next season.
ReplyDeleteDreadful. For me the most worrying thing, apart from our bowling attack which at times looked like it was playing beach cricket, has been the dip in Wayne's Madsen's form. It is as if he is feeling incapable of arresting the team's slide and exhausted by being captain and having so much on his shoulders.
ReplyDeleteAs has been said many times, MA'S tenure has been little short of disastrous. Yet we are stuck with him for another 12 months.
My solution? Take a long hard look at Leicestershire and see what we can learn from their policy of encouraging youthful
players combined with astute signings. They have turned themselves around. We have gone backwards.
