Derbyshire 199-5 (Donald 73, Guest 37*, Whiteley 35* Harrison 3-32)
Nottinghamshire 153-9 (Clarke 59, Patel 3-14, Ghazanfar 2-26, Brown 2-35, Hudson-Prentice 2-38)
Derbyshire won by 46 runs
From the moment that Calvin Harrison turned one inside an attempted drive by Caleb Jewell, I fancied our chances. We were bowling second, on a pitch taking spin and both of our spinners did a fine job tonight. If only we had done that at Durham, when we won the toss...
Batting first after being inserted by Nottinghamshire, Jewell and Nye Donald led off in fine style, getting through the Powerplay without being parted for the first time. Caleb went to the first ball after it, but Donald was on one of his nights and hit the ball with great power. Yet tonight his batting was measured, he didn't approach his innings like someone on a golf range. There were five sixes in his 73 from 34 deliveries and the only frustration was when he got out ahead of time, but he had given us a foundation on which to build.
Madsen came in at three, as I suggested he should do on the radio this morning, but he and Patel both got out quickly. Samit is still too high, but tonight it didn't matter, because Whiteley and Guest batted brilliantly to add an unbroken 65 from the last five overs. Brooke is always likely to do that and again, the frustration was that he has been excluded from too many games so far. Whiteley hit with serious power, continues to look in fine touch and the final total of 199 set Nottinghamshire a real challenge.
It was even harder when Ghazanfar's brilliance took two early wickets again, opposition batters having little idea what he was bowling. Nottinghamshire were in disarray and it could have been all over when Hudson-Prentice deceived Clarke, who top edged to mid wicket. Guest made great ground but either his call wasn't picked up by Ghazanfar or was lost in translation and a horrid collision ensued. The jeers from the home support were boorish and uncalled for, as it looked for a while as if Ghazanfar was badly injured, but thankfully he was able to walk from the field after attention from medical staff and returned later to complete his spell.
Clarke and Montgomery gave the home side hope, but a a magnificent spell by Patel turned the game. In four overs, a clearly pumped up Derbyshire captain removed Clarke, Montgomery and Moores and the game was won. He bowled with great guile tonight and 3-14 in T20 is a magnificent effort. If he would just accept his place in the batting is down the order these days, there would be no complaints from me.
The Derbyshire seam attack was much better tonight and it was nice to see Brown's many variations back in play, together with better line and length. Hudson-Prentice also did well and while Aitchison is a relative novice in this form of the game, he let no one down.
The frustration is that we know these players have this sort of performance in them. It has taken too long to get the correct eleven on to the park, but I hope that fitness allows us to keep this side for the rest of the competition. Perhaps Chappell and Aitchison may rotate, or play together when FHP goes back to Sussex.
Anyway, we are off the mark and have beaten Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge for the first time since 2013. It was a night that will live long in the memory and was a very good team performance, the kind that has lit up our red ball summer.
Let's see a few more now, fellas.
The standard has been set tonight.
In closing, I had a lengthy interview today with Matt Rhodes from North Derbyshire Radio.
You can have a listen here and I am on at the 21 minute mark.
Good to be up and running with a good all round team performance.
ReplyDeleteGreat knock from Donald but very frustrated for him as he looked like the ton was there for the taking and that's not a common achievement in this format. Hopefully he gets another shot.
Guest was great and Whiteley continues to be the form bat. Both need to be higher.
Hope Ghazanfar is OK!
I went to the game tonight and it was fantastic. I’d been a bit depressed after recent results but this was something else. It struck me that the classic white ball players - Donald, Whiteley, Patel, Ghazanfar, Brown - all came off tonight. It was a terrific performance and it was really good to see the Notts fans gradually getting quieter and quieter as our dominance became apparent. When the scoreboard says ‘required rate 36+’ it really is time to celebrate! Anyway I’m off to Edgbaston tomorrow and let’s hope we beat our other East Midlands rivals there!

If I had to pick a game for us to win that would be it. Hopefully we can give a better account of ourselves from now on. It is nice for once to watch our innings and not to have to say that The end is Nye.
ReplyDeleteThe crowd didn't look much bigger than the reverse fixture at the County Ground. It's not that long ago I saw us narrowly lose there with 16,000+ in attendance. Is their marketing budget that skewed towards the decimal dash or are there other factors involved?
Paul (Pride Park)
Well played by the team , very useful contributions from Donald and the spinners and a more collective effort with bat and ball restored some pride .
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'm the jinx, as soon as I miss a game we manage to turn in a great performance. Sounded like a near perfect execution with both bat and ball, with everyone contributing. Ghazanfar has been a revelation, what a find by MA and Samit's bowling looks to have improved this season.
ReplyDeleteBatting wise was a lot better and it shows we can do it, Donald was excellent then after a bit of a wobble again Guest and Whiteley excelled to get us to 199, a total that should be enough in most games.
Confidence restored, now let's beat those foxes today
Finally the whole machine clicked. A very good collective performance with Donald a little more selective with his shots. The game shows why Guest should have been in from the first game. Whiteley should bat higher and Patel lower (but his bowling was superb). Let’s hope for more of this in today's game.
ReplyDeleteAllez Derbyshire
Much, much better. That’s Derbyshire how we know they can play. Now back it up today and go from there. Too late for a charge?.
ReplyDeleteOther than some fielding blips early on we played very well. The first time we've got both innings of a match right and this is what happens. Look forward to today a little more than I was.
ReplyDeleteA fantastic performance. Donald and Jewell built good partnership in the power play, Guest and Whiteley provided a good partnership towards the end of the innings, and our bowlers kept Notts on the back foot.
ReplyDeleteI also thought Donald might get a ton, but it wasn't to be. He batted brilliantly, adding some restraint to his power hitting.
This afternoon against the Foxes we have to pick up from where we left off.
Much better, we all know we're capable of putting in a performance like that, which makes it all the more frustrating.
ReplyDeleteA few little things went our way, Donald dropped, Montgomery's dismissal, and long may that sort of thing continue. As stated, a few blips in the field, but all in all, a good effort.
Samit's four overs were a reminder of what he did for Notts against us, year after flipping year!
A great win & good performance, though that must be the weakest Notts team ever. The team seemed ver6 focussed last night & I liked a couple of tweaks, Madsen first in after the powerplay, Brown bowling outside the powerplay.
ReplyDeleteGuest played very well. I suspect that it is FHPs batting ability that helped him regain his place, but he has taken the opportunity. It may be coincidental but I think that Donald’s best scores have happened when he has not kept. Looking forward to today now

So much better than prior games.
ReplyDeleteA bit more measured than previous efforts and a good win.
Samit showed his bowling skills.
Much better not opening the bowling.
I wish he would now swap places with Whiteley in the batting order.
I wonder if Donald can repeat that performance on a more regular basis. If so we might win a few more.
Please Derbyshire, more of that from now on.
well, DCCC certainly proved me wrong yesterday, I didn't think we had a hope of beating Notts at Trent Bridge but what an all round performance
ReplyDeleteAlso, crazy that Donald's slowest 50 for us is 25 balls! what a hitter when he's in form, long may it continue!
sorry think I forgot to publish my name: Facet
ReplyDeleteFinally we got the performance we knew was in there. It all felt much more measured highlighted by the way Donald went about his innings.
ReplyDeleteThe spinners were brilliant but were also backed up by the seamers keeping a lid on things when they bowled.
Too late to make a charge at the QF barring a miracle but lets enjoy playing spoiler now and get a few wins.
At last a result to make us think that anything is possible! Look at South Africa!
ReplyDeleteI am sure Wayne will be over the moon you have added another year to his age :)
ReplyDeleteOh he won't mind a typo...at least it wasn't 52..
