Durham v Derbyshire preview Vitality Blast game 5

Fifteen will travel north for Derbyshire tomorrow, for the game against Durham at Chester le Street.

I have no idea which eleven will take the field, but Mickey Arthur takes a little turning when his mind is made up, so there may not be many changes to the side that lost at Edgbaston on Sunday.

You know what my team would be from yesterday's post and the Derbyshire squad is:

Patel, Came, Jewell, Lloyd, Donald, Madsen, Whiteley, Andersson, Aitchison, Guest, Brown, Hudson-Prentice, Potts, Thomson, Ghazanfar.

Ryan Campbell has named fourteen for Durham, namely:

Ackerman, Aldridge, Clark, de Leede, Drissell, Foulkes, Minto, Lees, Neesham, Parkinson, Raine, Rhodes, Robinson, Sowter

Durham have won one and lost two of their three games so far. They have players missing, but Ackermann has been a thorn in our sides over many years, as has Alex Lees. Ben Raine remains a player of great value  and it will need a much improved Derbyshire performance to beat them.

Yet sooner or later, a talented Derbyshire side has to click. Maybe tomorrow?

As I explained yesterday, I won't see tomorrow's game live, because we are in Glasgow to see Bonnie Raitt. I can only hope that Derbyshire score at a bonny rate and we come out on top...

I will watch the match back on Thursday morning, but will leave a page for your comments from the end of the game tomorrow.

Fingers crossed!

  1. Think with the same team we will get the same result. I was looking for 4 or 5 changes, some fresh blood. Never mind. Grant from Telford

    1. I don't think there are 4 or 5 changes we could make to improve the side, Grant. With Zak, Harry and Blair out, Luis and Nuj resting for the return of red ball, there's not much else we can do

    2. Dal, Wagstaff and Came for starters, plus Tickner…….Reece if fit….that’s 5 Grant from Telford

  2. Guest for Lloyd or Donald then, the only change

  3. I suspect - hope - Guest will come in, meaning either Thomson or Aitchison will give way.

If we lose against Durham, though, and several players continue to underperform, then we might see more changes.
Mickey said at the start of the season that players will get in and, stay in, the first XI on merit. Some of those in the first four games have been poor.

  4. Like the Bonnie Raitt comment Steve. To continue it ( although younger supporters will need to look it up ), it will be no Little Feat to win tonight…I bought tickets for their concert in London earlier today 😄

    1. I like what you say and I like how you say it, Bob! A fine band, liked them from the Lowell George days - and clever usage, too...

    2. With today's sad news I'm picking up bad vibrations.
Some things hit harder than a t20 defeat.
      RIP Brian Wilson.

  5. If we lose this game then the competition is a complete write off (realistically it already is) so I'd like to see the younger players get more opportunities at the expense of the likes of Patel and Lloyd who frankly aren't offering enough anyway. Patel can't even run a 2...that's not good enough.

Donald is so frustrating as well, so one dimensional when with better judgement he could be box office consistently (and admittedly wouldn't be with us with his talent).

Let's look at what may help next season or add momentum for the other competitions this season instead of limping on as we are which accomplishes nothing.

Open with the form bat in Andersson. Pick the best keeper and a handy runner in Guest (I'd let him captain us). Give Dal or Came another chance in the format. Let's see what Morley can offer.

Wagstaff, Moore and indeed Hawkins could be looked at to see what they can offer. Potts too.

    Andersson
    Jewell
    Came/Dal
    Madsen
    Whiteley (just) or Donald
    Guest
    Wagstaff
    Hawkins/Morley
    Brown
    Aitchison/Potts
    Ghazanfar

You can play with the order but that's got plenty of batting and 3-4 pace options plus 3 spin options and part timers.

    1. Not sure why you say “Whiteley (just). He should be the first name on the team sheet - most runs, best strike rate and highest average ( 43). Has looked in great nick and still batting too low at 6 imo Andy

  6. First game pretty one sided with Birmingham Women easily passing the 162 set. Looking at the men's boundaries would expect side batting first would need to set 200. We haven't so far looked capable of that. If we bowl first we need to improve to limit Durham to less than 200. One piece of good news from our point of v Ben Stokes just walked past me from the nets but confirmed he isn't playing tonight
