Derbyshire v Leicestershire Vitality Blast game seven

Leicestershire 196-5 (Budinger 49, Masood 43, Brown 3-51, Patel 2-33)

Derbyshire 197-3 (Donald 60, Patel 52, Madsen 35, Jewell 32, Scriven 3-29)

Derbyshire won by 7 wickets

Weekends don't get much better than that for Derbyshire fans. Even if it seemed like it took place in some kind of parallel universe, where they beat everyone with ease..

Following gone from last night's emphatic victory over Nottinghamshire, they completed an East Midlands double by fairly convincingly disposing of Leicestershire at Edgbaston today.

It didn't look that way in the first half of the game. Sol Budinger blazed away in his finest style to give Leicestershire an excellent start, before the spinners brought back a little control. The return of the seamers saw another assault, with Cox and van Beek taking 55 from the last five overs. It left Derbyshire chasing 197 to win.

I thought Samit Patel over the last two days bowled two of the canniest spells of spin that I have seen by a Derbyshire bowler in this format. Today, while his figures were not as spectacular as at Trent Bridge last night, he commanded respect and was well supported by Mohammad Ghazanfar. Although wicketless, the Afghan tyro was accurate and also returned fine figures.

Derbyshire needed a good start and for the second time in two days they got it. Jewell and Donald led off with 93 in just seven overs, the latter breaking his own record for the fastest fifty in Falcons colours, this time taking just eighteen deliveries in a stunning display of hitting.

Jewell seemed unhappy at being adjudged caught behind off the bowling of Scriven. Given that Cox, the wicket keeper, seemed to appeal every time he held the ball, maybe he had a point. Donald followed two balls later though and it left two new players at the crease.

Supporters may have had concerns about the inexperienced of that third wicket pair 😉 but the 41-year old Madsen partnered the 40-year old Samit Patel in a stand of sixty runs, surely the oldest half-century stand in the history of T20 in this country? They batted with great common sense, as you would hope, given their collective experience and kept up with the required rate.

It settled nerves, but when Madsen went in similar fashion to the way he was dismissed at Leicester earlier in the season, caught at long leg, 43 were still  needed in just over five overs.

Tom Scriven had bowled excellently for Leicestershire, but Patel took him on in his final over and hit him for two sixes and a four, to make the victory a formality. It had been, quite honestly, as good a run chase as you could wish to see.

Captain Patel scored the winning boundary and reached an excellent half century in 32 balls, a challenging chase completed with ten deliveries to spare. While the fan base has been clamouring for him to drop down the order, today he moved up, batted three and, to be fair to him, controlled the run chase to perfection. He can be very happy with his weekend's work.

I won't allow myself to get carried away. We all know the talent is in this squad to do this more often and we shouldn't have lost five straight games. Yet it was clear that confidence has been restored and I am hopeful that a mid-table finish is still possible. More importantly, the bounce will be back for the red ball, and as I said on the radio last night, once you get on a roll, the game seems so much easier.

Whatever happens, this has been an excellent weekend for Derbyshire supporters, one that will be looked back on with considerable pride and enjoyment.

Well done, gentlemen!

  2. Great to see some improved performances this weekend.

My concerns remain the same going forward:

Our bowling is very dependent on the spinners. Brown has gone at over 11 an over so far, miles off what he's capable of. If he and one or two others can find some form it will really help.

The batting isn't completely reliant on Donald but I feel like whether he fires or not really sets the tempo for us. We have others who can finish things off but if he goes early in the powerplay nobody can take on the hitting mantle and his strike rate really takes the pressure off the rest of the batting.

Next time Donald goes early I'd be tempted to ask Whiteley to go in and try and do the same job.

  3. How things can change in the space of 2 days.
Suddenly we look a good side.
This is of course due to a return to form of Donald and Patel.
    More like this please.

  5. Confidence is the key and we have plenty of that right now.Aneurin is really finding his touch and Ross Whiteley is a different player this time around. They are 2 of our big guns and we need them firing.Momentum is there so who knows?

  7. So much better in the last 2 games. Donald and the spinners the key, but well backed up by the whole team too.

Was disappointed with Pat Brown’s last over, as the first 3 were very good. The round the wicket yorker plan should probably be saved for lesser batsmen.

  8. Wow! What's happened to our team in the last 2 games? Well done Steve for keeping faith in our players and reminding us of their combined talents when most of us- me included- were doubting if we could win a single match in this format. Particularly fantastic to see Donald in full flow.

  9. The life of a Derbyshire fan! Despair to delight in no time at all. But then very often back again just as quickly. Let’s hope not on this occasion and the excellent form carries on.

  10. Great performance today. Looking at the scores in both games suggests it was a 200-210 wicket, so our bowlers did well.
Despite losing our first 5 we are only 1 win behind 4th place. Qualification is a long shot but whilst there is hope……

  11. What an absolutely great couple of wins over the last 2 days. Both based on the great start by Donald and two fantastic spells from Samit not to mention his brilliant efforts with the bat and his combative attitude. I am so delighted with this upturn in fortunes .

  12. I'm speechless! Losing five on the trot and then beating Notts and Leicestershire so comprehensively...Amazing. I wondered why Samit promoted himself to three - but he obviously felt he could take the team to victory. And he did that. He came in after a brilliant opening stand between Donald and Jewell: 82-0 after the power play! Madsen and Whiteley also played their part.

In chasing almost 200, I can't believe we won so easily.

  13. Great day in Birmingham over 800 runs and of course a big win for Derbyshire thanks to our match winning T20 players Donald and Patel. Seam bowlers still underperformed same as the whole campaign. But let's be positive only one win behind top 4 as it stands! 5 wins from 6 anybody? Nice to see Nye in the top 10 scorers for this year's blast on 199 and Ross on 198 in 11th

  15. Donald seems to bat better when he's not keeping. The concentration levels to keep and open the batting, especially second innings, must be a challenge. Kris

  16. Excellent couple of days' work! A pity it's taken so long to hit form but there's belief within the side again. On to Lancs on Friday - a tall order but win that and we're really getting somewhere. Well done.

  17. I’m back home in West Yorkshire now but so glad I decided to take a midlands mini break this weekend! Trent Bridge last night and Edgbaston this afternoon - perhaps the first time I’ve ever seen us win two matches in less than 24 hours! Fabulous displays, both. As I said last night, all the white ball stars are now firing - Donald, Patel, Whiteley, Gazanfar. Brown too - he’s not always economical but he does get wickets. I think we’ve got a chance of doing something very good in this competition this year. Let’s hope!

Well I can safely say the ambulance arrived right on time and saved me tonight, lol. But seriously that was another top performance and we suddenly seem to have clicked. We're not out of the race stranger things have happened . Come on Derbyshire!

  20. Does anyone know if there will be extensions FHP deal? As I’m very torn as Chappell has the ability to be a straight replacement. Then if you looking team perspective Aitchinson for Chappell is stronger team. I do think Aitchinson needs experience and this should be the year for that exposure. He bowled well in 1st spells he just seems to struggle in 2nd spell of bowling. It would be interesting to see the stats on this. He needs time to develop and learn how to bowl nearer death.

  21. Another good display, gives us some hope for the rest of the T20 campaign, but nobody should be content with 2 wins from 7. Donald and Jewell in the powerplay were excellent. Notts beating Warwickshire, in the context of trying to qualify, was a preferred result.

Ultimately, some poor cricket, questionable team selection and odd choices at the toss will cost us progress in the competition. However, IF we were to beat, what is likely to be, a strong Lancashire side on Friday, then I might start to wonder...

Brown is a concern. He's not quite executing his variations consistently enough. Really hoping he can find his best form. It would make a huge difference.

At least confidence should now be restored. This short break, perhaps doesn't come at the right time...

Not a fan of traipsing to the West Midlands and being made to feel unwelcome for a 'home' game in a mostly empty concrete bowl BUT the performance was decent. Heavily reliant on our slow bowling but the batting was superb.

    1. It's a personal view isn't it Tim which I fully respect. 5 luxury coaches made the trip from the County Ground. 2 returned after our match and the other 3 stayed for the second match. On our coach the unanimous view was that it was a very enjoyable day out. I think that this may be the last time we play a home match at Edgbaston as the crowd numbers are definitely dropping off and Sky couldn't be bothered to broadcast it. Whilst still profitable for Derbyshire I wonder if Warwickshire still see it as financially viable.

    2. To be fair to Sky they were broadcasting the Test championship final which probably trumps a T20 match. Couldn’t understand why this double match weekend happened half way through the season unlike previous years. I agree this should be the last time we forfeit our home game especially if as forecast we are going to get less home T20 games moving forward.
