There's nothing much to report on the Derbyshire front. It was interesting today to see that Harry Moore and Pat Brown will be coached by Dale Steyn when they are on England Lions duty, which should be a great experience for them both. If they both come back bowling at his pace we will have no complaints, but joking apart I am sure they will be able to pick up some useful tips from the South African legend.
I am currently getting my cricket fix watching Scotland against USA A. It has clearly illustrated so far that Andy Umeed is a very fine batter, as is Brandon McMullen. 'Candies from a baby' came to my mind as they have currently added 150 in 24 overs, in a warm up for the Cricket World Cup League 2. Judging him on performances elsewhere, not specifically today, McMullen really needs a county gig somewhere to kick on to the next level.
At 25, he has a big future.

DeleteInteresting to see that Ian Bishop is 57 today. He put in some amazing performances for us, notably when he scattered the Hampshire batting at Portsmouth in the mid 1990s and we won easily thanks also from a major innings by Peter Bowler. Coincidentally I chatted to both of them in 1992 at Southampton where we were playing Hampshire in a Sunday League game on a wet and windy August day. Both were very friendly and affable. It was a pity that Bishop's career was cut short by injury and that Bowler subsequently left for Somerset after a major falling out with Kim Barnett I believe.
DeleteIan Bishop played his last game for Derbyshire in 1993 a B+H game against Middlesex , he was contracted to return in 94 but informed the club just prior to the West Indies v England series early in 94 that he would due to his ongoing back injury he wouldn’t be returning to Derbyshire’s chairman ( who was in the West Indies watching the series)and recommend a young and relatively unknown Trinidad batsman as his replacement the chairman contacted the then captain Kim Barnett he recommended to the chairman to decline the offer because he feared because of his lack of experience of playing in English conditions he might be another Lawrence Rowe in favour of getting Azza to return the young Trinidadian was Brian Lara and the rest is history FACT
