Derbyshire v Durham T20 game 14

Are you feeling hopeful, Derbyshire fans?

I suspect that Durham supporters are, given that they welcome back Mattie Potts and David Bedingham for this one, international players both. With Alex Lees, historically prolific against Derbyshire, to lead a side that also includes Colin Ackermann, Callum Parkinson and Ben Raine, we are up against it , even before we consider their TWO overseas players, Australians Ben Dwarshuis and Ashton Turner. They play their overseas players, an interesting concept one hopes might catch on...

I would love to see Derbyshire win tonight. There would be no expectation of further progress, because the sides in the southern group look stronger, to me. But my expectations are low, because options are limited by injury, selection idiosyncrasies and poor recruitment.

We have too many single format players on a small staff, which limits the options. Patel, Whiteley and Brown are seen as one-day players,  so much so that the latter two have seemingly  been allowed to take part in the 'Caymans T10' in August, according to reports. Meanwhile, Dal, Conners and Lamb are perceived as four-day players, Reece is, but is drafted in anyway, Potts has effectively disappeared  and Aitchison has been injured and largely missed the season.

So the options for change are limited, further complicated by recruitment of overseas players who duplicate our areas of strength (Dupavillon) and numbers (Fletcher). The latter is apparently still struggling with a groin injury, which poses the question why he is included in matchday squads?

So it is fair to say I am baffled, not overly optimistic and with few real expectations of a win tonight. As we saw again last night of course, when Saif Zaib hit the Birmingham bowling to all corners of Northampton, one player can have a special day and turn form on its head. Yet Derbyshire are again struggling because of a lack of clarity in roles and team selection.

It made no sense to have Luis Reece open again last night, when his tournament high this year is just 23, from seven matches. The argument that he is a fifth bowler doesn't really wash, because he has only bowled six overs in those seven games. Yet Guest is omitted, very much to the detriment of the wicket keeping and fielding standard, with an average of just under 30. Maybe he was injured, but such an occurrence is as rare as elephant eggs on your breakfast table.

For what it is worth, I would go for this side tonight, giving us the best chance of success:

Donald, Guest, Lloyd, Madsen, Patel, Whiteley, Thomson, Chappell, Amir, Brown, Dupavillon

It is a long tail, but you could argue that if the top eight don't score the runs, you shouldn't expect the bottom three to do so. Equally, it gets your best bowlers out on the pitch, at the same time as your best batters. Surely such common sense is a prerequisite of team selection? If there are injuries, so be it, but shouldn't supporters be made aware of this?

Durham bring the following squad:

Ackerman, Bedingham, Clark, Coughlin, de Leede, Dwarshuis, Jones, Lees, McKinney, Parkinson, Potts, Raine, Robinson, Sowter, Turner.

As always, I will be watching intently, as will all of you, in person or via the stream.

Yet I'm afraid to say my confidence isn't high.

Having said which, you have no idea how happy I would be to be proved wrong. Yet even if we win, we need to keep our NRR above that of Yorkshire (against Nottinghamshire) while Birmingham beat Leicestershire. It's going to be one of those nights.

What are your thoughts?

  1. We'll need a big innings from someone tonight, or a couple of players posting substantial scores. Donald has done an excellent job in getting us off to a flying start, but if he fails tonight someone else is going to have to step up. I"d go with the same team as last night unless Fletcher is fit. If he is, I'd leave out Reece or Wagstaff.

  2. Agree with your assertion on Donald.BUT a competent coach would say to him - “yes continue to go for it in the power play, but then tone it down, because if you’re still there after 15-20 overs we will win the game.” So frustrating seeing him play these daft shots with all that ability.

    1. Agreed, Andy. He had taken three fours off the over and could have racked up 80-odd against that attack. But it was a daft shot and started the decline. As you say, he could still be aggressive but should consider the bigger picture too

  3. Vital we get this team selection right. I agree with playing DuPavillon, he’s a wicket taker with those yorkers.

Feels like so much depends on Donald not just getting us off to a flyer but then going on. So oftern the boundaries completely dry up once he's out.

    1. Do you play a bits n pieces player to bowl a couple of overs and bat 8/9 or a bloke with over 300 wickets? It's a no brainer to me

  4. You've got to be in it to win it. Have you heard anything about the rumours about Luke Proctor and Martin Anderson signing for 2025? Kris

    1. Curious as to where you saw that, Kris? Both are out of contract and they are among names I have heard. But it is silly season and when you have had a poor year, as we have, names get associated. Andersson had a spell on loan here in 2018, of course. Procter is 36, good player but shouldn't we be seeking younger?

  5. I suppose with one game to go and a chance to progress is some sort of achievement, but I agree it looks unlikely. Even if Leicestershire lose to an already qualified and guaranteed home quarter final Warwickshire side, you can quite possibly see Yorkshire soundly beating Nottinghamshire and challenging our superior net run rate, as if we did win I'd expe t it to be close.

As for the team, I'm totally confused by recent selections. I sort of get the dropping of Guest, I'm sure Samit wants bowling options, but then he doesn't seem to use them anyway...

  6. It's on another fans forum about the signings. I can understand not playing 2 keepers, although Donald looked a bit rusty last night. Kris

    1. We were playing three keepers! Need to keep in mind on signings that a lot of rumour is generated by agents, testing the water. Would a club skipper leave to not be one elsewhere? I kinda understand Andersson, but unless we are finding more money for next year, I struggle to see where we finance such deals. Most players are on a deal that covers next year, only Lamb and Conners, Aitchison and Potts from memory are out of contract..

  7. How can you drop Guest?°He should be in at 3 behind Lloyd and Donald.Nice to see Whiteley and Brown play so well against their old club but we have to show more consistancy if we want to progress.Topspinner.

  8. Right decision to drop Guest.

His T20 average this year of 29 is inflated by 3 not outs and his strike rate of 109 is absolutely appalling. Suggestions he should bat in the powerplay seem mad to me, he just doesn't score anywhere near fast enough.

Happy for him to bat at 8 if we feel we need his keeping but that's it really.

I'd be tempted to send Chappell out early when the field is in as when he hits it then it stays hit.

    1. He just needs to rotate the strike. He hasn't been in prime form, but has been shunted about like the rest. Certainly a better bet than Zak, for me. Huge difference in facing a new ball and old one...

  9. I like Donald and if he can bat the innings ,we have a chance to win .What he needs is players around him who can rotate the strike and also remind him of his key role ( this means a no to Came ,Reece ) My top 4 Lloyd Donald Madsen Fletcher ( Guest if he’s unfit ) plus we have to play 2 overseas !! One of the top 4 needs to bat > 15 overs ,

  10. Hi Steve,
So will Whiteley and Brown not be available for the one day cup if they are off to the caribbean? I thought we were focusing on white ball cricket this year? I realise were not one of the favourites to win it but it would be nice for us to field as strong a team as possible. Instead of giving the impression we are just making up the numbers ala the county championship!

    2. Thanks for the clarification on that. Fingers crossed for tonight!

La, st night's performance doesn't give me any confidence whatsoever for this game, yes we won but it was a horrible batting performance, nobody can smack it around in this team and score quickly enough that's the biggest problem at the minute. Wayne might score 40 plus but it takes him as many balls, then you have Donald who blows very hot and cold, Patel and Whiteley a big innings once in a bluemoon and that's your lot. Why Reece is being picked heaven only knows, had a pathetic t20 campaign yet finds himself opening the batting again. Prove me wrong tonight Derbyshire and put in one of those rare great performances, where we look a complete outfit

    1. So Brown and Whiteley are off to play in some 10 overs aside nonsense rather than play in the 50 over cup in August just about sum's up the current shambles at Derbyshire

So the masters of disappointment turn in another turgid batting display, 153 is nowhere near enough to defend, really rubbish stuff all round. Our batting coach needs to go this summer simple as that
