Lancashire v Derbyshire Vitality Blast game 3

Lancashire 179-7 (Bohannon 39, Bruce 35, Chappell 3-38, Brown 2-37)

Derbyshire 122 (Came 42, Green 4-12)

Lancashire won by 57 runs

The bottom line, at the end of Derbyshire's second defeat of the tournament, is that a small squad cannot afford the absence of two of its major batters.

The loss of Nye Donald so far and of Wayne Madsen for this game hurt Derbyshire. Then again, as a friend said to me at the fall of the third wicket, how nice would it have been to have had a hard-hitting overseas all-rounder at that point? Or indeed, opening the innings, as Peter Handscomb did so well for Leicestershire yesterday?

I won't keep going on about it, because the die is cast as far as Mickey. Arthur is concerned. We went for an unnecessary second overseas seam bowler and in situations like this are paying the penalty for not having additional batting firepower. Even someone like Chris Green, maybe not a world beater, but capable of powerful shots, tidy offspin and excellent fielding.  He would have been perfect for this side and there are plenty like him around the globe.

Lancashire's overseas players registered second top score and and figures of 4-12 respectively, after Green also made the difference at the end of their innings with 22 from 11 balls.

We fielded one overseas player, again.

I find myself pining for last year and a combination of Haider Ali and Zaman Khan would have given me greater confidence than I currently have. For all his faults, Haider got runs quickly and was a powerful presence when he got his range.

I thought we bowled decently again today and the fielding has maintained its intensity through the first three games. Dupavillon did very well in his first three overs, but the final one was what hurt us. It happens though and it is rare for a bowler not to go around the park in the last few overs. Only a Rampaul, Langeveldt or Zaman Khan can prevent that and we don't have anyone of that calibre.

I was a little surprised to see Mitch Wagstaff bowling in the powerplay, but he again did pretty well.  None of the bowlers let us down, but the top order isn't firing and in the absence of Madsen, Patel needed to go big, which he can't do every time.

Guest offered the only real resistance and there is an argument, as I have said before, for him to be going in at the top of the order. His speed between the wickets is a real asset and he can hit as cleanly as anyone else. He is used to facing a new ball and I would regard him as being the second best bat in the club.

The place of Luis Reece would be under threat if everyone was fit for the Nottinghamshire game, because he isn't looking like scoring runs at the moment. I'm not overly fussed about a left/right partnership at the top, if we have the best players for the positions.

It was a winnable game, as was that at Northampton. But we go again and must hope our injured players are fit. At won one, lost two we aren't out of this, but we need to sort out our best batting order fairly quickly. Oh, and ideally find a good overseas playing in the leagues that we can register...

One disappointment today was the Lancashire stream. It is all singing and dancing, but I can live without regular shots of people waving to the camera, spotting 'lookalikes' in the crowd and focusing on the fielder throwing the ball in, rather than what is happening between the wickets. Several times we saw the bowler in his follow-through, while I lost count of how many times we saw the fielder throw the ball in, with no idea whether it was close or not.

Things to work on for them. Just as Derbyshire have plenty to work on themselves.

  1. Is there any particular reason why Derbyshire aren't playing both of their overseas bowlers?

Yes we were missing Wayne and Donald but that was a seriously dismal effort with the bat this afternoon. I think the last over from Dupavillon killed us, he'd bowled brilliantly before that but I'm sure we were deflated as chasing 150 sounded OK but 175 a totally different proposition.
Our batting is a real concern for me, other players beside Wayne and Samit have to step it up now, too many totally out of sorts. Came and Reece isn't working so why are we persisting with it, Came looked OK today but he's too slow, Reece just hasn't got going at all. Expected to lose today, but it was a very feeble effort with the bat

  3. I totally agree about the camera work. For such a Test match ground it was very poor. It makes you appreciate the great job they do at Derbyshire with the stream

  4. The worst part of the stream was Stephen Moore commentating like he was getting paid every time he said 'momentum'.

  5. Some thoughts from me:
    - I’m sure Wagstaff’s first over was off spin. Hard to tell watching the stream back as a lot full balls that over. Did anyone else notice?
    - Brown’s final 3 and DuP’s first 3 overs were excellent

  6. Always was going to be difficult without Donald and now Madsen. Also when we are struggling to score effectively in the powerplay it makes the task even harder. We certainly need those two back quickly otherwise l can’t see us outscoring many sides. All that on top of the overseas issue makes the job a really tough one.

The fielding has been excellent and the bowling better than l expected but with a small squad we have little room to manoeuvre.

Hope we can bounce back against our neighbours, that would put a smile on faces.

  7. I was at Old Trafford this afternoon and the home fans around me were very subdued at the 19 over stage, and for good reason. Yet by the end of our powerplay, we were dead and buried and the game turned into an absolute thrashing. I agree with your points, above all about the major strategic error regarding overseas recruitment. Frankly, the error was obvious at the time it was made; the choice of two non-batting pace bowlers was as baffling then as it is now.

  8. Yes a poor day all round.Never felt confident we would make 180. Apart from Whiteley no big hitters to push us close.I've just listened to Mickeys interview and for me he just doesn't get asked the searching questions.Topspinner

  9. First of all well done to Lancashire they deserved to win. But I saw that coming a mile off. I said on these pages both last night and this morning that we might pay dearly for such a short turnaround and so it turned out to be.You'll never convince me
for reasons I've already documented that the 12 noon start didn't go significantly against us. I've already sent an email to Ryan Duckett urging him to fight our corner if they try to pull a stunt like this next year.Guess what I've checked the fixtures and their appears to be no other 12 noon starts this year. Sour Grapes ? Possibly, but more like I want a level playing field we didn't get one today.
The whole episode reminds me of personal experiences of under performing in similar circumstances. Derbyshire can fold up at the best of times without having one arm tied behind our backs. Onwards and upwards we're still very much in the competition. Notts is now an absolutely huge game that we can't afford to lose. Problem is we haven't beaten them since 2015 here or 2014 at their place.

  10. Arthur's judgement in all areas has been found wanting time and time again so don't be surprised at the drivel he comes out with in interviews. There is not a worse top 3 in the competition and in most teams, Reece, Came and Lloyd would fail to get a spot. The sad truth is that we are just not good enough no matter who plays because recruitment and game management is so abysmally poor. I'm excluding Samit from any aspect of that criticism because I believe he has far more cricketing 'nous' if thats the word than any other person at the Club. This looks like being another write-off season and if that turns out to be the case , heads have to roll. Today again showed the pitiful overall strength of the squad. It is just so disheartening and pathetic.

Agree Sam, our first three batsmen just aren't going to weigh in with big scores, and even if they do it will take them nearly a run a ball to make them. Hopefully Donald is back on Friday, he has to replace Reece for me, and if Wayne recovers he comes in for Came

  11. I really don't think we can use the starting time as an excuse for a performance like that.We missed 2 of our best players, yes but Lancs were severely weakened with England call-ups but the players who camNotts next let's hope Sammi gets them fired up for that!Topspinnere in were excellent and all contributed to the win.

    1. The test match counties have bigger squads and are much better equipped for a few players being unavailable. (From Wikipedia) Notts have a squad of 29, Lancashire 26, we have a squad of 20 (including Mohammed Amir). Martin

  12. I expected some one to disagree which is fine, that's what this blog is all about. But have you read my comments last night and this morning. I'm digging in on this one due to vast experience of competition home and abroad over a 30 year period.
So I'm not budging a single inch.

  13. Hopefully Madsen and Donald will be fit for Friday. I still think the schedule has treated us harshly. Lancs away is the hardest game in T20 cricket and we have to do it a few hours after Birmingham. Kris

  14. Not sure that scheduling it for a few hours later would have made a huge difference, given the other issues we have in terms of fitness and team make up.
We were soundly beaten. We move on to next weekend and hope for better.

  15. Not saying it would have necessarily made a difference to the outcome, but given the nature of the pitches and Lancashire's T20 modus operandi at home, if you win the toss at Old Trafford don't you bat first?

    1. I thought that too, Jasper. I was surprised Thommo didn't get included too and a seamer omitted.

  16. Didn’t see much of todays game after watching the first 2 matches ball by ball , I think we are 2/3 players short of a good side ( smaller squad ….) we are really struggling in the powerplay ( a carryover from last season ) plus our bowling options are imbalanced ,add in injuries and we will struggle !!

My team v Notts ( subject to fitness )
    Lloyd
    Donald
    Madsen
    Guest
    Patel
    Whiteley
    Thomson
    Wagstaff
    Chappell
    Brown
    Overseas ( coin flick )

8 possible bowlers …and get the ball strikers in up top

  17. I suppose the issue is that Madsen, Whiteley and Patel are at the end of their careers. The niggles will set in, especially after a big effort like yesterday. Lancs away isn't one of our must win games. We should be looking to beat Notts at home tho. Kris

  18. Yes despite being a Mickey Arthur fan I have to say the mistakes appear to be mounting up. I'm starting to wonder how well briefed he is on a number of issues such as mentioned by Jasper. I always speak to my mates either in person or on the phone after a game and it was unanimous we should have batted. It's slightly worrying the way MA sees the game so differently.Again quoting half a dozen friends he consistently seems to get things wrong. I'm assuming he's calling all the shots but I don't know for sure one imagines D Lloyd has an input as well. We still have much to play for it's not over by a long way but the worry is for me are the players going to keep faith with his decision making. ?

  19. I went over to Old T this morning and was optimistic but as soon as I saw Wayne wasn’t playing I revised my opinion. So many questions. If Wagstaff is going to bat at 9, we’d be better off playing a proper spinner in Thomson. Reece and Came are good county pros but they’re not a T20 opening pair. Too slow, too orthodox. Might as well open with Lloyd, at least he’s get things moving although I’m never confident he’ll stay in for long. I don’t have a clue why we’ve signed Whiteley. If he’s going to bat that low down and not bowl it’s a waste of a place in the team. Signing three pace bowlers who can’t bat all at once (in addition to an existing three pace bowlers who can’t bat in Conners, Potts and Aitchison) was never likely to have a good outcome. Lakhmal looks a world beater compared with this lot. I was so optimistic when Arthur took over but it just feels like we are going backwards every year.

  20. Tom Wood on a T20 contract would have been a good move, as cover for Donald. We can't expect Madsen, Whiteley and Patel to play high intensity T20's, a few hours apart, like today. Notts are not a great side, we need to channel the energy of queens park and go for them on Friday.

  21. Yes we need to omit Reece and Came from the team. Why has nobody mentioned Matty Lamb for a place? As others have said start with Lloyd and Donald and bring Guest in at 4.We do have a small squad but there is enough talent here to challenge for a quarter final place.Topspinner

  22. Just watched Mickey's interview about confirmation that Mohammad Amir will be joining for the last six T20 games. When asked about having three overseas available for those games, he said that was a real plus. The problem is none of them can bat. Neither can Brown. As others on the blog have suggested, we should have signed an overseas batsman or all rounder.

On a positive note, in 2022, when we reached the quarter finals, we lost four of our first six games. So, I'm optimistic that we can sort ourselves out, go on a good run and get out of the group.

Northants, after winning their first two games, crumbled against Yorkshire last night, like we did against Lancashire.

    It's all to play for.
