Northamptonshire v Derbyshire Vitality Blast

Derbyshire 162-7 (Lloyd 41, Madsen 37)

Northamptonshire 163-5 (Bopara 56, Vasconcelos 42, Raza 38 Brown 3-33, Chappell 2-29)

Northamptonshire won by 5 wickets

Derbyshire lost their opening game of the Vitality Blast in a last ball thriller at Northampton. There was a battling display in the field that augured well, with Ross Whiteley and Pat Brown outstanding, while Brown and Zak Chappell were excellent with the ball.

But in the words of the old Johnny Nash song, after watching tonight's game there are more questions than answers.

My opinion is that an opening partnership of Luis Reece and Harry Came is too slow. The former used to be a real dasher in this format, but was less so last year, scoring at 118 per hundred balls. 22 from 23 balls at the start of the innings is way too slow, especially if you don't bat on and accelerate. I feared the worst tonight when I saw that Nye Donald was missing, but hoped that we might mix it up at the top, Lloyd opening, because Madsen is too low at four, for me. He is the best T20 bat and needs as much time at the crease as possible.

Then again, Whiteley at seven is plain daft. What is he supposed to do in the last five overs? Surely you want a bloke who can hit the ball into a neighbouring county at the crease with ten overs in which to do it?

Shouldn't Ross have been above the skipper? It might be early days, but having watched Samit in a couple of games, there is a suggestion that his hand/eye coordination is perhaps not what it was. I suspect a few opponents might bring on the quicks when he comes to the crease..

I suggested in the winter and early Spring that an overseas spinner who bats was our greater need for T20. Such a player would have been a greater asset tonight than a second overseas player who didn't make the team and wasn't announced as injured. Again, I said before the season that with Brown and Chappell good at the format, two overseas quicks was one too many. If the master plan is to rotate them, why are we playing one overseas player in a competition that allows two? Why do we have a third seamer coming in, regardless of his reputation?

Patel martialled his troops well and the ground fielding was excellent. He also bowled a canny spell, but he got the bowling wrong by entrusting the last over to Luis Reece, who to my knowledge has never bowled a death over before. Then again, would Luis have had to bowl it were there a second overseas bowler in the mix? One might also question why Alex Thomson was selected but didn't bowl his full allocation.

Earlier David Lloyd batted brilliantly, Wayne Madsen played very well but we cannot lose so many early deliveries to dot balls. Better sides than Northamptonshire lie ahead and we will be more severely punished. As it was, Raza and Bopara proved the difference between the two sides, the latter excellent with bat and ball.

In conclusion? There are reasons to be cheerful, but we must hope that Madsen isn't too badly injured having not fielded, and we badly need Donald back for the next game for early impetus.

We nearly pulled a rabbit from the hat tonight. But that particular trick won't work very often if we don't sort the batting inadequacies.

As for the mystery of the missing overseas...Agatha Christie alone may have the answer to that one.

In closing, a mention for the excellent camera work tonight, though the home commentators left a lot to be desired in the bit I listened to.

Confusing Reece and Lloyd isn't overly impressive when they are left and right-handed respectively, while Alex Thomson apparently scored a double hundred for us in the last game...

More questions than answers indeed, like some of my old exam papers.

Six out of ten. Must do better.

  1. Seems bizarre to bring in a big hitter like Donald and then not play him in a T20!

I'm a big Reece fan but felt he was declining in the shorter forms theast couple of years. I think we need to mix it up as I wouldn't expect many quick starts.

    I'd have Madsen at 3.

  2. I'm not overly disappointed it could have gone either way at the end, t20 is very much a game of fine margins. The important thing is not to overreact I think because we're Derbyshire supporters we can tend to do that.Only one individual 50 in the 10 teams that played, and we all know where that was. No big scores in the 180 / 210 range scored by anybody. An unusal opening night due to probably the pitches and zero turnaround from the 4 day game.Every team struggled that's more than a coincidence. You can't sharpen your t20 game with a 2 day t20 hitting practice. Remember that means even if they mixed t20 practice with first class preparation last week they still can't be spot on this early in the competition, and neither were the other 9 teams last night. But we do need to be 2 and 2 after the Notts games or we'll be playing another game that's called the catch me if you can game. And I'd rather skip that one.

  3. As the Ian Dury song went, reasons to be cheerful. We took it to the wire.

I too was surprised that Whiteley didn't come in earlier, and Reece bowling the final over was probably not a good move.

In the next game, I'd open with Lloyd and Donald/Reece. Lloyd goes for shots from the start.

  4. What’s the collective noun for a group of local radio commentators?

    A Bias.

Agree they did leave a lot to be desired Steve.

  5. I was surprised to see Donald omitted. Hopefully this will be rectified for our next game and - hopefully again - he will repay our faith in him.

This game was lost between overs 8 and 17 when we got totally bogged down, lost stupid wickets and couldn't find the boundary for love nor money. We started off OK after the poor dismissal of Came with Lloyd looking in decent nick, he was supported well by Reece even if he is too slow at scoring. Once Lloyd had gone it was dismal batting and cost us the game, Guest, Patel, and Whiteley scored less than 10 runs between them not good enough. Even Wayne never looked comfortable scoring at a slow rate and when he went I thought we'd struggle to reach 130. Big credit to Thomson and Chappell who steered us to respectability even though I didn't think it would still be enough

Our bowling was good, Pat Brown looking very sharp the pick of our attack, supported well by Patel, Tickner, and Chappell. But unfortunately for the how many seasons running the failure to bring in a blaster of a batsman will be our undoing again as 160 or less will be our par score I feel and it won't be enough to win many matches. Not the start we were hoping for, pressure on already

  7. I think that is right. Small margins but felt like Northants used their resources better. Willey, Bopara and Raza at 3,4,5 so they could make the difference.

As mentioned Lloyd could open and Whitley higher up by a couple of places. Be interesting if they make a few changes for the next game.

  8. Has this current team got enough runs to chase or set a score? I don’t think it has personally. While think 2 overseas are great professionals. Do they fit well in our team and that’s down to Arthur and back room staff. My personal opinion is we need to open with Donald and Lloyd. Have Wagstaff as your 5th bowler and would share Reece/Lloyd and Whiteley.

  9. Personally I like Reece opening as it gives the left/right combination, but he does on occasion get a little 'stuck' with too many dot balls. I assume the plan is for him and Donald to open and I would go with that for now. With regard to Wayne, I assume the plan is to have him in when the spinners are on, so I think LLoyd at 3 and Wayne at 4 is fine.

I agree with regards to Whiteley, he needs to 'float' and there are signs that Samit's batting might not be quite what it was, so Ross ahead of him should certainly be considered.

I thought our fielding was excellent, Brown allayed some of my doubts, Samit bowled well and captained effectively. I don't particularly have a problem with Reece bowling the last over on that type of pitch, and with the options that were available. Though perhaps, there's the problem...two overseas bowlers, neither of whom are T20 specialists. That's MA'S choice, albeit one hampered by Amir's change of mind.

It's 2 points dropped that we may rue come the end of the campaign. I'm expecting us to win our fair share, but enough to qualify? Unfortunately I doubt it. As for Northants, a bit scruffy in the field, but I can see them upsetting a few of the bigger teams, which may help us. I'm sure they will harbour hopes of qualifying, and what a shame Ravi Bopara couldn't have continued his journey a little further up the M1....

  10. On the basis of last night's batting, how about Chappell and Thomson being the opening pair. At least both can smack the ball and at a decent rate too?
