The game sees a first call-up to the long format squad for Ross Whiteley, who has done very well so far in charge of the second team.
Our two overseas players look certain to play, so for me the final selections would appear to be between Whiteley and Matt Lamb for a batting place and Sam Conners and Zak Chappell for a bowling slot.

After scoring 150 for the seconds at Belper this week, Anuj Dal has likely done enough to seal his place in the side, which might otherwise have seen Whiteley take his place. With most of the batters needing runs and the bowlers short of wickets, there is every reason for people to do well in this one. After scoring a century himself at Belper, Harry Came is unlucky to miss out.
Like Derbyshire, Northamptonshire are still looking for their first championship win of the summer. They unusually have two Indian overseas players in Siddharth Kaul and Karun Nair, with George Scrimshaw returning to Derby for the first time since last winter's move. Ben Sanderson is always a handful and Derbyshire will need to be at their best.

Whisper it quietly but the forecast for the 4 days is dry. So whichever way it goes, there is every chance of at least a positive result.
I am hoping to see a Derbyshire side revitalised after their break and with confidence after good runs in the second team.
Hopefully I can report on just that tomorrow night.
I won't see all of the play tomorrow, because I am in Manchester meeting up with some friends. But I will watch what I can when I can and will be able to see the rest of this one from Saturday onwards.

ReplyDeleteThe only issue with the weather is we've just had two days of monsoon rain in Derby and currently at 20.00 it's still raining
ReplyDeleteWhoever plays, we need to see some aggressive and exciting cricket, as MA promised we would in his pre-season interviews. This will be game 6 in the CC, and we haven't won a game. So, whatever problems there have been with both both batting and bowling should have been fixed by the multiple coaches. We live in hope, but we might die in Castleton, as the old saying goes.
ReplyDeleteWell, here we are again with Derbyshire back in the glare of the first class game, with the same questions to answer. Hope the time away has been well spent with practice, MA energising words, and positive thoughts. So can a couple of our players step up and produce match winning performances over the 4 days? Scoring over 400 in the first innings would be useful and bowling out Northants for less would be a start. We are all watching and hoping.

ReplyDeleteWell I thought Derbyshire stuck to their task well today, compared to the Sussex debacle. But theirs a but and that is as a four day bowling unit I'm afraid their just not good enough. As has been remarked in earlier games theirs a sameness about the bowling. 10 wickets look a struggle never mind 20. Who on earth we're ever going to beat in a 4 day game this season I just don't know. Second game I in a row no Alex Thompson given our attack he should have played all 14 CC this season.Fresh from a 150 yet no Harry Came coming of a prolific second half of the season last year with Reece.This is nonsensical.Take the the first three Northampton batters and their Careers.The truth is their their solid County players but definitely nothing more than that. Stats wise Reece Guest and Madsen are easily the equal of their first three. Their star player Karun out cheaply today is the exception so leave him out of the equation. The point I'm making is we match up well in terms of batting ability so it will be interesting to what kind fist we make when we bat. But the problem is are Northampton going to bowl considerable better than us.My conclusion is this is a team Derbyshire ought to beat in terms of how well we match up player for player.

We bowled and fielded well, but didn't bowl the opposition ou, once again. Tickner was impressive. Going on previous games this season, Northants will get to near 450 and we'll be all out for 220 or thereabouts. I hope I'm wrong. In this XI, we can bat down to eight with Chappell at nine. Lloyd and Reece need to maker a good start and the a couple of players score big. Will it happen? Mmmm. perhaps....
ReplyDeleteThe evidence so far this season is that Nortampton will bowl better than us. Sussex bowled us out in 26 overs in under a session. I ve been in attendance on the ground at every fixture so far home and away.Other Alex's Thompsons outstanding 12 wickets haul in Cardiff no other bowler has remotely looked like running through the opposition batting.Agreed Blair looked good today but in my comment I did say bowling unit Our bowling so far this season lacks a real cutting edge this to me is abundantly clear. Tomorrow's another day but we are now 6 CC games into the season and so far the bowling unit has been woefully ineffective. But we live in hope.

So another game which isn't going to provide a victory, Northants going to hit 400 plus runs in their first innings. I just have zero faith in Mickey Arthur to save this season now, we just stumble from one poor performance to another. Dupavillon and Tickner have one wicket between them as I write, too early to write them off but it's looking like another pair of poor overseas recruits. Mickey Arthur had better hit the ground running in the T20 otherwise there will be calls for him to call it a day at the county ground
