He will be 40 by then, but if last season's form is anything to go by, maybe he can do a 'Darren Stevens' and play on longer still.
Last year very much marked a renaissance in his fortunes. His batting with Shan Masood was a joy to behold, but throughout the year he set an example with the bat, while remaining as good and safe a slip fielder as anywhere in the country.
That he was often the choice for point in T20 matches, when Anuj Dal was not playing also speaks volumes for his fitness. He still looks as fit as he did when he first burst onto the Derbyshire scene.
We have all been privileged to watch a genuine all-time Derbyshire great bat exclusively for our county for what will have been a decade and a half by that stage.
The thought of it continuing for at least another 2 years is very much a thought to warm the heart.
I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to both his classically correct and wonderfully improvised stroke play over the next two summers.

Great news! A wonderful professional and role model to any aspiring young cricketer. I hope he plays a part in Derbyshire cricket for many years to come in whatever capacity that might be. One of the best signings the county has ever made.

This really is terrific news. In recording a game of chess, this sort of move has an exclamation mark to indicate it’s a good move. With news last week of Mickey Arthur’s contract extension, and with Guest having also signed-on, I feel this represents a solidifying of the club’s foundations, as well signalling an intent to build and progress.

Putting my cynical hat on while it's good news that WM has added another two years to his career at Derbyshire does the 100 not have another two years to run? If so is it just a coincidence?
ReplyDeleteI don't think his playing for us gets him the power the other deal and vice versa. Wayne loves Derbyshire and the area and winning silverware before he retires would be massive for him.
DeleteI think he could go to to 42, but every season in later career brings a fresh challenge. Each could be that season too far. But I think he has plenty of cricket in him yet!
I agree with all the plaudits for Wayne. A great player and a wonderful servant to Derbyshire.
