Big task ahead for Head of Cricket

I suspect that it may be at least the end of next week before Derbyshire announce their new Head of Cricket, possibly even longer.

The reason for the delay will become obvious in time, but the successful candidate will need to hit the ground running, whenever he is free to start.

Derbyshire's staff list on the website only features 17 names. Given that one of these is George Scrimshaw, who has taken on a Lord Lucan quality since the end of the Vitality Blast, we can say it is sixteen. My understanding is that a contract was offered, but declined, as a better one was out there. I am surprised that he hasn't yet signed this, but don't expect him at Derby this winter.

Of the remaining sixteen, Luis Reece may not be fit for the start of the summer, while Nick Potts has barely played. So it is evident that new players are needed.

I still think it ridiculous that Dave Houghton was allowed to recruit - on two year deals in some cases - before he left, but the counter balance to that is had he not, we wouldn't have a side, let alone a squad. The new HOC may come in and be unimpressed, but that is but the first challenge awaiting.

How does he replace our leading run-scorer, Matt Critchley, who was also our lead spinner? I am not convinced yet that Alex Thomson or Mattie McKiernan can take on that latter role, but unless we bring in an overseas spinner, I don't see any better around the circuit.

I do think Tom Wood might be a good replacement at five, but so too would Leus du Plooy, more likely productive there than at three. But who bats three? Wayne Madsen prefers four, so perhaps our four-day overseas picks are a spinner and a number three bat, to rotate with Dustin Melton.

Much will depend on who we can pick up around the circuit, but the 'name' out of contract players have been snapped up. We also need a wicket - keeper, to replace Harvey Hosein, ideally one who can wield the willow. Not to mention at least one more seamer, or seam bowling all rounder, to replace Fynn Hudson-Prentice.

Paul Walter at Essex may be a good option, as noted by Essex fan on a previous post, a left-handed all rounder of some talent. His limited chances haven't been improved by Matt Critchley going there, but others will be interested and they have people in post to make decisions.

Overseas players were a disaster last year. It is refreshing to see Leicestershire using analytics to bring in two Afghan players for the T20, based on their statistics and who they were made against. I would love to see us do similar.

Last year, Stanlake was an accident waiting to happen, while the figures of McDermott tend to show him as a flat track bully, a strong bottom hand and tendency to play away from his body causing bother whenever the ball moves. Van Beek fielded brilliantly, but a tendency to bowl one or two bad balls an over cost him. Rampaul was sadly past it, while Melton was too often injured and will hope to do better and have better fortune this year.

Things to sort, then. Even before realisation dawns that Madsen, Godleman and du Plooy are in the final years of their deals...

Yet if the new man comes in (and those in the frame are names) with a passion for excellence that lures players in to work with him, and an ability to coax the best from a small squad not without talent, we may see an improved 2022.

But there is much to do

  1. I think we'll see Wagstaff on a pro deal.

We'll look to Wood to replace Critchley's runs with Thomson or McKiernan turned to for spin when required.

FHP unlikely to be replaced but with Conners, Aitchison and Reece all good bowlers and the former two another year of experience better off and able to take more responsibility.

That's in terms of the domestic players, I don't believe there are many available that would improve us even with our depleted squad. Perhaps we could follow Leicestershire's lead and pick up someone like Scriven who looks promising and has an outstanding second XI record but who looked to be struggling for opportunities at a bigger county. Much like Came you may say, another who could get a big opportunity to thrive this season.

I think on paper we still have a reasonable first team but the overseas slots are vital and we can't afford any of our big players to underperform with the bat as they did last season. Hopefully Dal and Guest can also continue where they left off.

    I'd like to see:

    Godleman
    Reece
    Overseas batter
    Madsen
    Du Plooy
    Dal
    Guest (wk)
    Cohen/Spinner (pitch dependant)
    Aitchison
    Conners
    Overseas pace bowler (Melton)

This would leave Wood, Came, Wagstaff and Hughes as batting reserves most of whom are likely to feature in white ball. Only Potts as a pace bowling reserve unless we've an additional Overseas as well as Melton (or does he qualify as domestic now?) So reinforcement needed here, maybe Moulton to sign permanently which may be underwhelming but we'll need a couple I feel.

With a fair few batters able to come in to the t20 side we may look for bowling or all round options as overseas players here with a spinner likely a must. Mark Watt would be a canny addition too given his ability to keep runs down. Of course to get the most bang for our buck we may look at an overseas to play all formats, if so perhaps Grant Roelofson could be an option - all format batter who can bat up the order, can keep and won't be troubling the SA selectors for now.

    1. Some interesting thoughts as always, Hamez.

Unless rules have changed and I haven't seen, Roelofsen wouldn't qualify as he hasn't played international cricket.

Watt would be a good one day pick, but what would it say about DH spin contracts if they were ignored and you signed another I agree with you, he is a sound T20 pick IF he keeps the weight off, as he isn't a natural fielder.

Reece may not be fit till May or June and Wagstaff may have Uni? But your points are valid and well made, thank you!

    2. I wasn't aware overseas players needed to have played internationally? Unless you mean he'd need to have to get a visa but I'm sure he'd be OK there.

    3. The regs have been changed and can be seen here

      https://www.ecb.co.uk/governance/regulations/governing-body-endorsement/

But they now need to have played set number of games in their own country, as well as or instead of the international appearance route. So he could play, now!

    4. Excellent, please pass his name on to your sources!

    5. Sadly, my sources don't sign players for us...!

    6. I have looked more into Roelofsen. He looks a player, but had primarily made his runs below top tier there.

I watched a lot of their T20 competition and the lower level is very poor. Dominic Telo came from it and struggled and we all saw the travails of du Plooy last year against a moving Dukes ball.

Not sure on that one, because their pitches are generally more favourable for batsmen

    7. I think that's fair, would certainly be an element of risk but from what I've seen he looks a good batter. I think increasingly SA is the place to look given they churn out solid players there. Or increasingly and especially in the short formats the Afghans are producing a lot of big hitting batters, some decent fast bowlers and some of the world's best spinners. Leicestershire are already on to this and there could be value (literally) in following their lead.

Feroze Khushi was a name I seen mentioned below, that's a player I like although as per my original post assuming we get a good overseas bat in we're OK for batting numbers. Both the keeper batters mentioned would be ok number 2s though behind Guest.

Somerset have two fantastic keeping prospects in Baird and Rew and I wonder if a loan could be possible if we were able to offer first team cricket for a season (with Guest playing as a batter). The former had a game for our second XI at the end of the season as well. Could be the option of getting Joss Morgan involved too if we just need a backup for Guest.

  2. You’ve obviously got visibility on the shortlist. Not expecting you to break confidentiality, but two questions:
    1) Anyone on the shortlist on your ‘dream 5’ that you shared a few weeks back.
    2) Are you excited by the shortlist?

    1. Hi Nathan, no visibility, just good sources, like HP!

      To answer your questions:
      1 Yes. And one unexpected
      2 Very..

  3. Really don't want Stuart Law. He didn't give a stuff when he played here, why would he as HOC.

  4. We have Beard, Buttleman, Khushi, Nijjar, Pepper, Plom, Rymell, Snater as well as Walter (not mentioning Sir Cook) out of contract too. No proven performers but some serious potential (2 keeper batsmen in Pepper and Buttleman) would not be surprised to see a couple of the list move on. I think Nijar (who played against you in T20 finals day) is better than both your 2 spinners, and is also a decent bat, easily a number 8 if not 7 in 4 day cricket, but has never had a real chance. You could do worse than sign a couple of them (Plom being the one i don't rate)

Walter is not widely praised and struggled early on when he was more a bowler, now he rarely bowls (but with the right coach a 6.5ft left armer who has some pace should be able to be molded into a good bowler), and his batting is focus, hes actually done very well in the top 6 (including opening) in the last 2 seasons and been one of our most consistent bats without ever going on to get big scores or looking to ease at the crease, as a highest score of 96 illustrates. but i think hes averaging around 36 across his career which on sporting Essex tracks is pretty good.

Based on the coaches seemingly being in employment, i assume your preferred choice Bradburn is not on the list PF?

    1. I like Snater, when I have seen him, even been envious of his hair! Be surprised if he was released, but..

A keeper is an obvious need for us and I don't know enough about some of the others

As for names, I won't be drawn, but very good options. Remarkable, in fact!

  5. The silence is deafening re the new coach, does that mean no outstanding candidates have come forward or the no news is good news scenario. I remain optimistic we've chosen well but wouldn't be at all surprised if we've gone down the cheap easy option route

    2. The silence was deafening all last season a complete lack of accountability towards the members

    3. I regard last year as the nadir. Which in some ways makes the new man's job easier.

On and off the pitch we were a shambles for much of it. But there were green shoots we can build upon.

  6. Potentially a couple of weeks before the announcement ? Someone involved in the T20 World Cup ? Intriguing.

  7. I have read all the above comments but have to say that at present our squad looks extremely thin and hardly likely to cause concern to any other county contemplating matches against us.Our new HOC will have to work very hard to get us up to strength.

    1. I agree. We need several players for sure

  8. I'd still be tempted to offer Jade Dernbach a role. I thought he bowled well in T20 and could he give us the experience we missed after Rampaul? Kris

    1. He did, Kris but it would depend on salary demands and fitness. We have a finite amount of money and could likely get 2 players for what he was on at The Oval, maybe even 3.

  9. I would be looking at Harry Finch of Kent. As a Kent fan, he played one match in an emergency last year when they had to play a new team due to covid, scored a century against Sussex, also an excellent slip.(54 first class matches, 68 catches) Kent have just signed Ben Compton from Notts, so Finch may well be down the pecking order.
He's only 26 with 4 first-class hundreds, might be handy.

  10. Lewis Hill could be a great signing for us, he's not re-signed at Leicestershire yet, would come in fresh off an outstanding year with the bat and he'd be ideal as wicket keeping backup for Guest. Not too far down the road for him either which might help us snap him up. Also a very good leader.

  12. Some time ago I suggested Matthew Renshaw as an overseas recruit and he's started the Sheffield Shield season well. He scored over 500 runs in eleven innings for Somerset and has been a solid performer in the BB, where he also bowls occasional off-spin.

    1. Good player, Matt and born in England, I seem to recall. A good option at 3 and out of international reckoning. A good season in England would do him no harm...

  13. Properly impressed by the bowling of Mark Watt and Safyaan Sharif for Scotland. The latter was also good for Kent fleetingly last season.

Suspect both will have County contracts next season for at least the Blast.

  15. Fantastic innings by Guptill for the Kiwis. Great to see he still has the ability to smash the ball to all parts at 35. An outsider for our 2022 overseas player?

    1. There's a few Kiwis I would gladly take, but also a few Saffers. I like the Sri Lankan leggie Hesaranga too..

Some good players on show at the at the T20 World Cup. A few of the Pakistan players will be in demand too!

    2. Several Kiwis could be, but much depends on who gets picked for tour parties.

      Won't be cheap, either!

  16. Morning Peakfan, I hope you are recovering well. There are some interesting comments and I am sure we are all getting excited about the name of the new HOC. With regard to some negative comments about the recent signings, I believe the Executive Team with David H had no option but to sign these players. As you said, we would not have had a squad to pick from otherwise. In cricket as well as football, recruitment is no longer left solely to the Head Coach or Manager. The clue is in the name ‘Coach’ it is his/her job to coach and get the best out of the players available not necessarily to recruit them. So well done to the management for getting these players signed. There are not an abundance of available players out there. I am sure the Chairman and CEO will bring in a HOC we will be all excited about. Clay Cross Mark
