Derbyshire v Leicestershire day 2

Leicestershire 528 (Hill 113, Evans 88, Wright 87, Swindells 76 Aitchison 3-71, Thomson 3-84, Critchley 3-144)

Derbyshire 41-3

Leicestershire lead by 487 runs

I am really at a loss for what to say tonight, as Derbyshire, after toiling in the sunshine for nearly two days, started the slide to what appears yet another defeat.

That former county paceman Will Davis took the wickets of Leus du Plooy and Wayne Madsen was a delicious irony, though the sad fact is that we have been totally outplayed for two days by a team that also contests the 'worst team in the country' moniker in the eyes of many.

Leicestershire batted, batted and batted. It might not have been fun to watch, but it was effective, played us out of the match and looks set to have helped them to win it.

Grim up north? Not half.

But in the eyes of those that make the decisions, all is well.

So that's OK...

  1. Derbyshire CCC hierarchy & coaching staff playing right into the hands of the ECB, and the Athertons & Simon Hughes of this world.....

  2. Not for the first time this season, I thought when Derbyshire there is an air of inevitability about it. And it was true this afternoon. Leicestershire had racked up the runs with ease, with five players passing 50. Yet when we came out to bat, within half an hour or so Wood, du Plooy and Madsen had all come on gone. These mini collapses have become our trademark this season. That about sums up the season. We'll probably be all out by the middle of the afternoon tomorrow - or earlier - and heading towards another defeat. Leicestershire players have made twelve CC centuries this season; we have one.

  3. I wonder if in the history of sport there is a greater example of continued failure without change. It really beggars belief. DH should be long gone - and he should have shown himself the door if no-one else can be bothered. As also a follower of the Rams I have never seen such a shambles in either of Derby's leading sports clubs - let alone both at the same time. At least the supporters' trust have called the Rams' board to account today - where is the voice of the Derbyshire members? And what transpired at the members' forum on Sunday?

I wish I didn't care. But I do. And I'm angry beyond words, so I had better say no more.

    1. Nothing transpired at the Forum. There was a message to 'not believe what you read on line..'

I am simply watching what I see on the pitch and reporting on it, together with information gleaned from a wide range of sources and cross-referenced

And it ain't pretty... If I put half of what I was told 'out there' and only 10% of that was true, it still isn't good.

  4. The fact their night watchman lasted until mid afternoon probably sums it up. We were toothless with the ball apart from a decent spell by Aitchison. Not for the first time the pitch changed when it was our turn to bat !
Let's hope for a Billy marathon special tomorrow.

  5. It was the dramatic drop in individual players batting average that struck me as very worrying. When you listed the numbers across the team many were ~50% beliw their career average, yet in their peak years as players.

  6. The current squad would finish mid table in the DERBYSHIRE COUNTY CRICKET LEAGUE premier division. It is no longer appropriate to categorise Derbyshire as a first class county....
They have completely stagnated over the last 5 to 10 years and there should be relegation out of the CC for counties such as Derbyshire, allowing a fresh and vibrant minor county their opportunity at first class level.
I'm afraid the club has become a 'blocker' to progress in the professional game.

    1. Think you are overestimating the Prem league there Paddy, the standard in the last 3 or 4 seasons has been awful! As poor as they are this DCCC squad would win it at a canter. However I completely agree that the squad is nowhere near good enough for County cricket. Too many bits and pieces players (Dal, Hughes, Thomson, Marshall, Wood, Melton etc are simply not of the required standard). On a different note why was Melton (who I believe is contracted) playing for Ockbrook at the weekend and Moulton drafted on loan into the DCCC team? Symptomatic of some of they very strange selection decisions that seem to have taken place all season. It's just an utter shambles.

  7. Christ this is rubbish, its crap. 30 minutes in and Godleman and Critchley gone. Critchley shot one of a man in despair!! Last night Guest interviewed on radio Derby said 'it's still a very good pitch'
