Derbyshire 215 (McKiernan 38, Wagstaff 36, McKerr 3-43, Moriarty 3-44)
Surrey 219-2 (Patel 111*, David 52*)
Surrey won by 8 wickets
Despite missing most of their first choice side to the new competition or international duty, the visiting top four of Patel, Stoneman, Pope and David was way ahead of anything that we could field.
A classy century by Patel and a bruising knock by the giant Singapore international David saw it almost like men against boys, the home attack powerless to stop it.
Surrey played well, or as well as they had to do in beating what is a very ordinary Derbyshire side.
Mitch Wagstaff batted well, though his departure confirmed his callow youth with an unnecessary shot. There is something to work with in the seventeen-year old, but the rest of the batting was anaemic. McKiernan did well for a while and Smit, on his return, at least ensured we got past 200. Most people got going, but no one went on to a big score.
The game was in fact a microcosm of the season. The batting can't get close to enough runs, the bowling, shorn of key players and confidence, looked distinctly average. Even Rampaul looked finished, his three wickets in the competition coming at a cost of over seventy runs each, a pale shadow of the T20 star of 2019.
In short, the squad needs a major overhaul this winter. As regular readers will know, I strongly feel this should start at the top, but very much doubt anyone on the board has the desire to change anything, which is both extraordinary and shows them as out of touch with support.
We have too many players who are just short of this level, decent players but not match winners. I feel for them, because it isn't easy getting hammered every time you play, but we have to do so much better and we won't under the current regime.
I have heard things this summer, verified by several sources, that have in turn shocked, disappointed and saddened me and I haven't seen the club at such a low ebb since before Eddie Barlow came.
We are losing Fynn Hudson-Prentice this winter and I don't expect him to be the last. Money is tight, but the club's future is at stake here and we can ill-afford to have another summer like this in 2022.
Bottom in four-day cricket, bottom in fifty-over cricket, next to bottom in T20, merely on a technicality. There are some good players at this club, but they need leadership and motivation, or the talent drain will become a flood.
I don't think Dave Houghton will help us turn the corner. At 64 he cannot have the energy for what is needed and if the club board, whether through misguided loyalty, a lack of awareness, or simply not caring expect him to they are delusional.
Houghton said that after three years as his coach he doesn't know whether Anuj Dal is a batsman who bowls or a bowler who bats. Isn't that damning? Given that the lad has been unable to buy a run all summer, wherever he has batted and was the eighth bowler used today, the players seem to have a clearer idea.
Similarly he has said he can't put his finger on what is wrong. Isn't that his job? In my senior roles, if I don't know where the issues are I expect to be pulled up about it.
There have been so many issues this summer. The continued selection of Godleman when he was clearly struggling, the insulting treatment of Hughes at Chelmsford as night watchman, the disappointing overseas selections - whitewash it any way you like and I could go on, but it has been shocking. This from a bloke who has been supportive of most coaches in my time doing this blog and likes to accentuate the positive.
We have more cricket in eighteen days time but I expect disappointing news for supporters in the intervening period, or at least season end. Let's face it, the remaining September fixtures are effectively 'best of the worst' matches anyway.
I am not optimistic of us winning many, even with some returns from injury and illness.
I just hope that the board surprise me and show a greater willingness to do something than they have suggested this far.
Otherwise, I am afraid the clock is ticking on our club. It may be anyway, but to do nothing is frankly an insult to supporters after this season.
Sport is a result - driven business and we haven't got many this year. Yes, there are some reasons, but too many have been self-inflicted for my comfort.
Absolutely needs a refresh. New coaching staff.
ReplyDeleteSurely it needs a massive shake up. The whole coaching staff. We’ve not been competitive at all.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree, Steve. What we need now is another Eddie Barlow-type figure. Before Barlow arrived at Derbyshire in 1976, we were pretty mediocre. But he galvanised the team, gave the players self confidence and turned average players into far better players. If you cast your mind back, there was a real energy about the team when they took the field.
ReplyDeleteWe have lacked energy and confidence in this nightmare season. Surely Houghton must know the reason for such a string of poor performances, both individually and collectively. True, we've had lots of injuries, Stanlake and McDermott had to return to Australia, we've lost Reece, du Plooy and Critchley to the Hundred, and Covid has impacted on the team. Yet we still should have been able to make a better fist of things.
Wagstaff is one of the few bright spots this season. He batted well today, and, had he not played a rash shot (he's only seventeen), might have gone on to make 50 or 60 - or more.
Poor Anuj Dal had a shocker again.
Well sad PF . Major changes are needed NOW.
ReplyDeleteI was going through the motions a little bit at the game and got to thinking how the game has changed. In 2012,all 4 days of our promotion clinching game was televised by sky. It seems almost unbelievable now, in the constant push of The Hundred. The county game is being marginalised and even The Blast didn't get much coverage.
ReplyDeleteOur club seems tired. It was a healthy crowd today, but the lack of enthusiasm is palpable. Most of our better players are over 30 and we are going backwards. We finished above Yorks in both white ball formats in 2019 and second in the Bob Willis trophy 2020. This year has been an absolute car crash and I wouldn't bet on us winning any of the last four games. Kris
Can we honestly say that any established member of the squad, with the exception of FHP, has played up to their potential this season? The reasons seem to be a perfect storm of poor off field leadership, collapse of confidence from the captain, lots of injuries, and loss of key players to the 100. The club needs to address what it can - i.e. the off field and on field leadership.
ReplyDeleteWe can hanker after a Barlow type figure to lead the club forward but I dont think that is realistic in todays world. A top drawer player, even if he has retired from international duties would still be drawn to the IPL, the 100, and others, so wouldnt realistically ever be available all year round.
Much better to get the off field set up right, manage recruitment of young players well and have a youngish player (Matt Critchley) if he still at the club, to lead on the field.
We are only ever going to be a feeder club to the big counties now, but get it right and we could exceed expectations. Its not many seasons ago that we could at least look down on Leicestershire. They have turned the corner and are now among the best of the worst. We can and should follow their example.
IMO this whole season has been a complete car crash not only for Derbyshire but cricket in this country in general the idea of playing multiple competitions on the same day is rediculous, Derbyshire need yet another complete reset is there an appetite within the management board to do this? Or have they already excepted that the days of Derbyshire being a first class County are coming to an end?
ReplyDeleteI agree that things have got to change with many questions to answer for the performances this season.
ReplyDeleteAm I correct in that even though our Batting has been so poor all season our Batting Coach is currently working for Trent Rockets ?
Why were Surrey allowed to call up Oliver Pope last minute from England. Why could we not call up Matt Critchley, who is currently not starting when Harry Came went ill overnight ?
Before deciding what players to release I'm not sure counties will be releasing many as assuming next seasons fixture structure is the same they will need extra players when the Hundred is on again next year.
My question to the current people in charge is "What will be done different next year ?". If they respond with very little different then change is needed.
It's crazy, David. A mismatch today for sure.
DeleteBut absolutely, the next member forum that needs to be asked. How long must we expect to endure seasons like this? What have you learned from? What overseas will you target? How will you strengthen the side?
Because for me, Came and Thomson are squad players. Neither is better than we have already and neither is guaranteed a game, as I see it.
Surely we have to do better - do disrespect intended - than the returns of Dal, McKiernan, Thomson, Came?
And here's another question.. Why do we give 2 year deals to Came and Thomson, yet only one to Wood? Wouldn't one year to see how they go have made more sense?
The thing now with Tom Wood's century v Notts. If we only offer him a White Ball contract next season he could easily get a more lucrative white ball contract at other clubs who will be more aware of his ability.
DeleteI see potential in Came but he needs better coaching as similar to Wood in some extent there always seems to be a crazy shot when looking set. Which is why in my original post I was amazed to see Mal Loye working in the Hundred just when our young players needed him most.
In Red Ball I cannot see what Thomson will offer. Wood has proved to be our most economical bowler in RLODC so that is another reason for similar treatment to Came.
Houghton and the management staff out, major overhaul needed if we want to stay in business. Yes it is as desperate as it sounds, we're sinking in to a huge hole as a county and this has been as desperate a season as you could imagine. Sick of it!
ReplyDeleteA small ray of light for our county is the news that Queen's Park Chesterfield will continue to stage Derbyshire matches for the next five years. So presumably some people out there are confident in Derbyshire's ability to continue to exist as a first class county for a few more seasons. Apart from this, I agree with everything said on here.
DeleteYes, that is good news! One of these years, I will make the festival and it will be sunny, dry and packed with good Derbyshire cricket!
DeleteA question to answer, how many of our current players would get in to other counties starting elevens?
ReplyDeleteObviously Fhp is going, and I can only think of Du Plooy and possibly Critchley who would attract any interest, a poor state of affairs isn't it?
I think Madsen still would, but I take your point.
DeleteFew would turn down Reece either, when he is fully fit. He hasn't been this year
If Derbyshire could field a batting lineup in no particular order ~ Billy G Wayne M Luis R Du-Plooy Tom Wood Matt C Harry Came Broke Guest should be more than competitive
ReplyDeleteProblem is, Ranger that we have this year. But only in T20 on occasion did we look competitive. In 4 day the batting was poor. So what is wrong? Either they aren't as good as we think (I don't think that the case) or the motivation and coaching isn't what it should be..
DeleteWith the batting line up. The trouble is in Red Ball cricket is how many of that list best position is the top 3. Billy yes. Luis possibly but he shouldn't open the batting and bowling. Brooke Guest potentially. Came and Wood seem more middle order red ball players.
DeleteThis is one of the reasons we struggle. Our stonger middle order are often coming in to bat when we are 20 for 2 etc needing to do a rescue job against a new ball rather than having a platform already set.
Agree but on paper it’s a decent batting lineup perhaps one or two want away and have downed tools?
DeleteWe can't just simply put it down to injuries and the Hundred, as the four day form early season wasn't great and the T20 hit and miss.
ReplyDeleteYesterday was disappointing but sadly expected.
ReplyDeleteAgreed change is needed but not sure who would want to take this challenge on as it's gargantuan.
Also with the Hundred about, I can see less quality players being released by other counties for us to recruit.
So short term unless we can keep our first choice XI available, we're struggling.
The medium to long term solution, I believe, relies on spending less money on second rate overseas "stars" and investing in further Academy coaches to hopefully produce some of our own cricketers.
Also any spare places in the second XI need to be filled by the best of the players from the County League to show there is the possibility of progression, not just fill it with itinerant South Africans and Aussies.
The problem with depending on up and coming players from the County league is that the standard in the Premier league is the worst I can remember. The best bat by a country mile is still Borrington (I can't see him helping out DCCC any time soon) and the best bowler is Wheeldon who has already been deemed not good enough. There are some decent cricketers but no one who you would say is putting in performances consistently to warrant being given a go. I don't pretend to have the answers but thinking there is the talent in local cricket to fill the gaps is clutching at straws imo.
DeleteShort term yes. But middle term the strategy should be to increase the Academy pool, improve the quality of player to filter into the County League and increase standards. This will only happen with investment.
DeleteLet's not forget in red ball the following team...
ReplyDeleteGodleman
Reece
Guest
Du Plooy
Madsen
Critchley
Hosein
Overseas
Conners
Melton/Cohen/Scrimshaw
Aitchinson
....is not too bad a side.
I accept the above top order didn't fire early season but form is temporary etc.....
Maybe, Jasper. But I am not convinced all of them will be at the club next year. Nor that this top order will score the required runs.
DeleteI have no idea how many overseas players will be allowed next year, but for me we need someone who is a PROVEN number 3 next year, and either a quality seamer or spinner.
And of course the question marks against the seam attack will remain, until they show they can stay fit over a long season
Can either Guest or Hosein score enough REGULAR runs to be a number three, with the other keeping wicket and batting seven?
Too many question marks for me to have confidence for next year, as things stand.
Peakfan,
DeleteCan I ask if your messages of impending bad news are related to players such as Critchley or du Plooy leaving the club soon?
Those pair leaving really would top off a terrible Season.
Sorry if you cannot say too much but even more questions need to be asked of the Coaching team and the Board if we allow our best players to leave. We are already losing FHP after rejuvenating his career - a massive loss for next Season and beyond. We should have been building around players such as him.
Thanks and keep up the great work despite the Club’s poor efforts this Season.
Gareth
Hi Gareth
DeleteThanks for getting in touch. I can't say at this stage, but there will be disappointment among support for more than one reason..
I have never known such disenchantment among support in my time doing the blog. It is added to by the apparent apathy of those within the club to do anything about it.
Staggering, really..
I have just found a scorecard from the championship game with Middlesex June 30th 2019.
ReplyDelete1st innings;
Reece 96
Godleman 102
Hudson-Prentice 99
Du Plooy 118
Dal 92
557 for 6 dec.
I can't imagine any of these players getting scores like that in four day cricket this season. So what has changed? Kris
And against Sussex in 2019 Reece and Godleman put on 274 for the first wicket after Reece had taken 5-63 in Sussex's first innings.
