Derbyshire v Nottinghamshire RLODC

Derbyshire 258-6 (27 overs) (Wood 109, Came 57, Patterson-White 3-41)

Nottinghamshire 217 (Hutton 46, Hudson-Prentice 3-37

Derbyshire won by 41 runs

On reflection - and it didn't take long - that was my most enjoyable Derbyshire watching of the summer.

A magnificent century by Tom Wood took us to a total that, if not insurmountable, was going to be a huge challenge. Not even a late assault by Brett Hutton threatened a Derbyshire win and the players can be proud tonight.

There will be a few glasses raised in Ticknall, for sure. I was thrilled when Tom hit the six to take him to his century and what especially impressed me - besides the power and range of his stroke play - was his selfless attitude. He could have been excused for pushing ones and twos to get near his ton, but he blazed away  and it was simply magnificent.

Square drives, cuts, upper cuts, powerful pulls and drives.. the innings had it all. The frustration, of course, is that it took the coaching staff so long to realise he could do this. He should have been in from the start of the T20, something that became patently obvious when the penny finally  dropped for them. There can be no accusations of him doing it against a lesser attack either, because it wasn't. Fletcher and Hutton are time served professionals, while Paterson is an international. They were all treated with disdain and while the jury is still out on Wood the four-day player, surely he will gain confidence from this and there should be an admission of earlier selection error?

My first sighting of Mitch Wagstaff was positive and he later held a blinding catch to reinforce that good batting impression. Harry Came also batted pleasingly and struck an excellent fifty of his own that set the tone for the innings. Later support came from Alex Hughes and Mattie McKiernan and the final total seemed scarcely believable.

The first over maiden of Hudson-Prentice set the tone and after that Nottinghamshire were always behind the rate. Economy was hard to find for most bowlers on a good track, but Fynn's three wickets and intelligent varying of pace again highlighted what will be missed in the future.

Alex Hughes captained the side intelligently and with coltish enthusiasm, holding three catches as the run rate climbed. For me, he should have been one-day skipper before now and is too good a cricket brain to fail to utilise. He switched bowlers and ends frequently, offered words of encouragement and had a sound brains trust with Rampaul and Guest.

It is a pleasure to be able to write something positive, but we must not get carried away. The four-day win at Trent Bridge last year hid inadequacies we have failed to address and the success today must not be allowed to do the same. It is, after all, our first List A win over these opponents since 2004, as the BBC Nottingham commentator doubtless slipped in a time or two...

Nonetheless, Tom Wood's century, the second fastest all-format one In the club's history, will live long in the memory of those fortunate to see it. It certainly will in mine.

There appears to be something to build on, if the right supporting cast and overseas personnel can be acquired this winter. And if we now make the right decisions with regards to current personnel to enable the club to move forward.

I am far from convinced that will happen, but let's enjoy tonight and address those concerns another day.

  2. Brilliant from all today, but especially Wood! It was quite simply sublime! Something that we aren't used to seeing from a DCCC player at the County Ground.

With his power hitting and obvious ability, he may be suited to batting 4-6 in the 4 day format to make the most of his talent, instead of trying to survive against a moving new ball?! But again, maybe another oversight from the coaching staff.

I thought Came was really good today too and with Wood, set the tone for building a proper innings! FHP the leader with the ball that has so often been the case this season, but as we know, he won't be a DCCC player next season.

As you say PF, so good to write something positive, as I must admit I have had to restrain from posting in recent weeks due to the age old saying of "if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all"!

Now heads will turn to the management and hierarchy at DCCC, as I believe Wood is yet to renew his contract that runs out at the end of the season! Steve A (Spondon)

Very pleasing win. Credit where it's due. I've not been as happy to see a Derbyshire century in quite some time and he should rightly be very proud of his innings today.

  4. Fantastic effort all round, and fantastic result.
Great that the openers finally Came to the party. And our top three is starting to look solid (touch Wood).
On a more serious note - if it is true that Wood's contract is not yet renewed, and we fail to get him a new contract, then it will be a terrible indictment on the management. That said, I could hardly blame Wood for moving elsewhere if he got the chance - given how few opportunities he's been given here.

    1. I suspect DH will attempt to secure the services of Wood and possibly Hughes on a one day basis only. But they may well not be interested, and I don't blame them.

Are they worse, or less versatile players than Came or Thomson? I don't think so...

    2. Excellent from Tom Wood yesterday.

As for the contract situation I also suspect DH may offer him a white ball contract. I personally would agree with that decision. I think Wood would accept that providing the terms were suitable and don't see other counties clamouring for his signature at this stage.

    4. I very much hope so and would love to see that. Something for him to aim for... Good luck to the lad.

  5. I don’t really buy into this Wood can only play white ball theory. Opening up to Rushworth and Raine in bowler friendly conditions. Then Notts twice in the same. Let’s face it, the very best would struggle in those conditions and we had no batsman with an answer including Madsen and Deploy . His natural game is to attack. That is clear from his white ball performances. I see no reason why he could not prosper any where from 4 to 7 in the longer format. It takes a very specific type of batsman to open up and prosper in those harshest of examinations. As good as Madsen, Deploy and Critchley are you wont find any of em putting their hands up for that gig because they will know how tough it is. Wood appears to have been pigeon holed has an opener just because he does it at club level but remember that’s a 50 over game all be it played with a red ball. I’d like to see what he can do when the shine from the new red pill is less and the openers have been blunted before I wrote him off has a white ball specialist. I remember Ben Slater being pigeon holed as a red ball player only and given little or no opportunity until there was no other option. He then showed himself to be an excellent 50 over player and ended up being our best player for 2 seasons before he eventually joined our friends down the A52. An opener in red ball ?He may not be. Not able to play red ball cricket. I’ve seen nothing to suggest that might be the case.

    1. We all have our opinions but none of us see him up close and personal as it were, so maybe the best person to make that judgement would be a well respected batting coach and Head of Cricket who works with Tom day in day out rather than us supporters or even his close relatives....

  6. I agree John. Even Kim Barnett started down the order and there are other examples. I thought he was the one bright spot in the top order v Notts and was, at least prepared to graft, while at Durham he was up against two very good bowlers on a helpful track.

Worthy of perseverance for me, but I have no idea how the HOC will go on this.

Put it this way, if Came is worth two years, surely 'one of our own' must also be worthy of additional time?

  7. Tom Wood finally looking like a serious player this season.

  8. Tom Wood was injured at the start.
Whilst there is definitely things to be critical of, I think it's unfair to say they were wrong to not pick someone who wasn't available
but unbelievable result, kept pinching myself because I thought I was dreaming
