It would have been handy had they beaten Yorkshire, but like I wrote a week or so back, they just don't strike me as a team. Eleven talented blokes, on their day, but not a tight unit and when the chips are down, that is what pulls you through.
With this Derbyshire side, you get the feeling that you take on one, you take on eleven. It is why I don't fear playing anyone, regardless of their reputation. We might be missing several experienced players, but the rest are pulling manfully together. Hats off to the new recruits, who to a man have contributed. I read a tweet by David Griffin, the club's Heritage Officer, this morning that said that we have so far used eleven bowlers in two matches - and every one of them has taken at least one wicket.
Moving on, I have been asked a couple of times recently if I thought we should try to bring Ben Slater back from Trent Bridge. My answer is simple. No.
For one thing, he is under contract to the end of next year, while for another I suspect he will end up where he is now, at Leicestershire. For a third, and most important, he wouldn't get into the current Derbyshire side.
Cue protests from Chesterfield, but I am not saying he isn't a good player, his issue is consistency. He averaged 20 last year for Nottinghamshire, with a season-highest of 76. This year, he started at Leicestershire with 170, then followed it with a pair. By definition, as a county player you are among the top one per cent of players in the country, but to get to the national elite needs that little bit more.
How would Ben get into our current top four? Billy is skipper, Wayne and Leus pick themselves, then there's Luis.
Ben averages 31 in first class cricket, 50-plus in List A and rarely plays T20. Luis averages 33 in first-class and is a key all rounder in all forms. He opened batting and bowling in the last match and taking Ben out of the equation, who else could do that?
Ah but Luis could bat five, you say? No, because he likes and prefers to open. Besides, Critch bats five, or Alex Hughes. Then there's Harvey (or Brooke Guest) and Fynn, besides other options. I don't see it happening and I genuinely don't see how he could get into a first choice side. That is a sure sign of how we have progressed.
I think he made a mistake leaving Derbyshire and may have kicked on with Dave Houghton and Mal Loye as his batting coaches. He hasn't done so at Trent Bridge and I think he will look back on that move in years to come as one where he made the wrong decision or was poorly advised.
Next, the T20 fixtures are out. No surprises, as we play the same teams every year, but it runs from 27 August to 20 September. You can see the fixtures here
And finally today, in response to emails, my thoughts on the team for Yorkshire.
There will not be many changes, for me. I think Tony Palladino might be back soon, but not just yet. I don't think they will pick Fynn Hudson-Prentice as they will want to ensure he is right for T20. I also think that Sam Conners will be rested, as he looked tired on Monday and that Yorkshire's loan of Ed Barnes will preclude his involvement.
With Ravi Rampaul stranded in Trinidad, I expect to see the following eleven at Headingley:
Godleman, Reece, Madsen, Du Plooy, Critchley, Hughes, Hosein, Dal, Cohen, Aitchison, Melton.
As always, your comments are most welcome!
Just thinking out loud in regards to the T20 fixtures. With HQ out of action due to the biosecure environment would it not have been possible to play our home fixtures at some of the local grounds eg. Queens Park, Denby etc. Where we will have knowledge of the pitch from Prem and 2nd XI cricket
ReplyDeleteThey couldn't do it on health and safety grounds, Scott.
DeleteThe environments in which games are played have to be bio-secure and strictly controlled. You couldn't stop people going into those games and would have to stop club cricket on those grounds to get them to the requisite standards.
I understand it was discussed, certainly for Chesterfield, but it was a non-starter for those reasons.
When normality resumes I would be surprised if we ever play anywhere else for those reasons. H and S for toilet facilities, parking, getting in and out, keeping traffic flow etc would likely preclude most venues.
It's sad. I loved the outgrounds, but I don't expect to see any but Chesterfield return when so much has been spent on developing the County Ground to international standard.
Regarding the starting XI for the Yorkshire match, I'd favour putting Tom Wood in at 5 and leaving out Hughes. We are blessed with all-rounders, but not many specialist batsmen. Wood could give some additional weight to our top order.
DeleteIt's a fair point (please put a name on in future) and we won't know what he can do without opportunity.
DeleteI rate him, have for a while and would love to see him make it.
Certainly a good option.
Think Tom will get an opportunity in 20/20...as Houghts does seem a fair guy
ReplyDeleteI was very surprised to hear today that Tom Lace has signed for Gloucestershire. I thought that he would have signed for us as he seemed to enjoy his time at the club and fit in with the team spirit.
ReplyDeleteProbably money
DeleteMost of us are motivated by money and I am sure that Gloucestershire have met with Tom's expectations.
ReplyDeleteHowever, he would have been batting five, where Matt Critchley has been doing usefully, if not spectacularly so far. There's also Alex Hughes and Tom Wood for that berth. I don't think we can afford to have players on contract without a regular opportunity and finance will be tight for us.
More important, I think, is ensuring the seam attack is right for next year. What money we have has to be available for retaining those we want who are on short term deals and then strengthening thereafter.
I wish Tom well. He is a lovely lad an a good cricketer. I have no idea how he couldn't get regular cricket down there...
I would have tried to sign him or re sign Ben Slater and drop Louis Reece down to six how often have we seen LR opening and failing after having just completed a long bowling spell
DeleteI am a huge fan of Luis, and what he brings to the side, Ranger. If he produces the stats he does there are no complaints from me.
DeleteGloucs had money after losing Roderick and we aren't awash with that kind of cash. Like I said elsewhere, we also have three players competing for that place and as a club can't afford to have two or three good players on the periphery or in the seconds.
There are a lot of players out of contract around the country this September. DH will, have his eyes on one or two, I am sure
Who would you like to see us bring in Peakfan?
DeleteLuis has said he doesn't mind where he bats in the top 5 so an opener is an option. Anyone catching your eye?
I understand his preference is to open, James. If that isn't the case, I would give Tom Wood a one year deal and see if he can make a fist of it.
DeleteHe deserves it, after being a run machine in the leagues and in Oz for years, as well as our second team. Only right he gets a chance.
I would sign Aitchison too, on a 2 year deal at least.
Other than that I am wary of finances. There will he little off field income, with events banned. No idea how much we get from hosting England Ladies and Pakistan, but we need to afford 2 overseas next year to compete.
Suspect our market is in peripheral players elsewhere, rather than big names. Like we signed Guest, for example
Cheers Peaks. Is Wood comfortable opening then? That's good to know as I've often thought we are a bit light on experienced openers beyond Luis and Billy.
DeleteI have to say I do think keeping an eye on Slater could be worthwhile. Bringing him home would really strengthen the top order but could mean Luis at 5 as we couldn't have Slater or one of the current top 5 sat out most weeks.
I think with Conners and Aitchison looking handy alongside both the South Africans that pace stocks look good though as ever we lack a spinner. I'd be happy with Watt coming back even if it was on a white ball contract.
I agree Peakan. Money must have been a major factor. However, the lure of division 1 championship cricket next season could also have made a difference. They also probably promised him a regular place in their t20 cricket side this season which we were unable to do last season and would probably have been the case again this season.
ReplyDeleteI am amazed, like yourself , that he could not get into the Middlesex side this season. They looked very average in the batting department when I watched their game on You-tube last weekend in their defeat by Hampshire. However, Anderssen, our other loan signing from Middlesex 2 years ago impressed me with his batting as he top-scored with 92 for them. Hampshire did not look great either and managed to scrape over the line with 9 fit men.
Probably other factors in his signing for Gloucestershire are the batting surface at Bristol and the presence of 3 ex-Middlesex men there in Higgins,Scott and Smith.
I am disappointed that he has not joined us as he has proved himself when playing for us last year, particularly the fine knock at Swansea. I reckon he could have been the missing link. However,no complaints this season after a great start. Onwards and upwards against Yorkshire on Saturday.
Shame we couldn't get him but Gloucestershire lost Roderick to Worcestershire and may be expecting to be missing Bracey to England in the future so it's a good fir for Lace. Glouce also short on proven openers with only Dent seasoned and reliable so Bracey and Lace could fit in the same side very easily.
