Derbyshire v Nottinghamshire day 4

Nottinghamshire 324 and 279

Derbyshire 239 and 365-7 (Hudson-Prentice 91*, Godleman 86)

Derbyshire won by three wickets

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow...

At 234-6, with all the senior players gone, most Derbyshire supporters will have given up on winning this game. 131 still to get, a bloke with a sore leg the senior player left, after just twelve appearances, A debutant in next and a man making only his second appearance on his way to the wicket.

Who credited Fynn Hudson-Prentice, a man who lives in Nottingham, with playing such a superb unbeaten innings of 91? We knew he could bat, but this was an innings of genuine quality, innate common sense and superb game awareness. Credit to to Mattie McKiernan too, who lent crucial support in a stand of 65, before looking crestfallen on his dismissal, after a stand of 65.

Sixty-six to get and down to the debutants. Not to worry...

Michael Cohen, previous career-best 23, came in on his 22nd birthday and started spanking the ball through the covers like a latter day Graeme Pollock. His first innings hadn't really suggested that was in there, but his unbeaten 30 was impressive, brave and bolshie. Typical of the new Derbyshire in many ways, standing toe to toe and slugging it out with one of the 'bigger' counties. No more Mr Nice Guy. The way they batted, there were likely fifties in Ben Aitchison and Sam Conners too...

Michael's off side play was a revelation, but when he tucked one off his legs from Jake Ball and they ran the winning two, even my non-cricket fan wife jumped off the couch in excitement with me. We wait four months for a game of cricket and then get one that we will remember for the rest of our days.

There were records broken along the way, but I can only doff my cap to a team that just kept going and paced their massive run chase to perfection.

I am thrilled for all of them, but especially Fynn Hudson-Prentice. He came to Derbyshire after rejection at Sussex and has made himself a fixture in the side. His bowling was limited in this match with injury, his first innings hampered by the same. Today, he was simply sensational and has entered county legend, as they all have.

To win, I thought that one of our top four had to score big. Truth is that once Billy Godleman and Leus du Plooy had gone, much depended on Wayne Madsen, who can seldom have batted so long for so few. 43 in almost four hours tells that it was far from easy and his departure, closely followed by Harvey Hosein, looked like game over. 192-5, still 173 needed.

Maybe we could bat out time for the draw points? Matt Critchley again looked in good nick and seems to be playing much straighter, but for the second time in the match rather gave it away when he had done all the hard work. At 234-6, 131 needed from 35 overs, it seemed like a case of how long we could last.

Fynn, Mattie and Michael had other ideas. Tonight, gentlemen I salute you all. It was a genuine team effort, from first to last day. I could likely live another fifty years and not see another game of cricket that ended in such a special manner. Who said four-day cricket was boring?

I didn't have a lot of time for the home side's appealing as the game got tighter. Twice Hameed ran in from mid wicket to the umpire to appeal for leg before wicket. Next time, you can have your guard from there, son, if you can see so clearly...

But I digress. This was wonderful stuff. The only disappointment being that their supporters have taken to social media tonight to berate their side, rather than giving credit to a side that were better, over the piece.

By crikey, we'll enjoy tonight.

Special stuff, Derbyshire. Well done!

  1. Awesome. Wonderful to see how much playing for us seems to mean to the likes of Du Plooy and Cohen.

    Excellent stream and commentary too.

  2. Unbelievable. When Wayne went I feared the worst. Plenty of bottle and not a small amount of skill from Finn and the lower order. On a side note I spend a week every year up in Richmond (Matties club). Locals there always tell me what a tremendous lad he is and they are sure he will make a top notch county all rounder. Here's hoping they are right!!

  3. Extraordinary and brilliant. Not just the record run chase, but the way it was achieved. As you say, a great team performance, and it's so good to see a Derbyshire side battling back from setbacks instead of collapsing in a heap. You've summed the day up really well, Peakfan.

  4. What a match. My first as a Derbyshire fan for obvious reasons. I hope they’re all like that! Maybe the new blood has given them a new direction; combining experience with the bold and the bolshie. What an intoxicating combination.

  5. Have been watching Derbyshire since the 1950s and if there's been a better performance than that then I can't think of one. Thankyou to Notts for the wonderful live stream, it was great to be able to watch on TV. Thanks to messrs Fletcher and Bracegirdle for the wonderful commentary, they really do make it entertaining, we are so well served. Just makes you wonder what this side would have achieved this season at full strength.

  6. Well I’m feeling pretty emotional after that PF !!

A couple of months ago Dad passed peacefully away. He has a very good innings of 89 before raising his bat and walking to the pavilion in the sky

He was the reason i fell in love with Cricket and DCCC he used to meet me of the bus in chesterfield and we used to watch the evening session as he only worked over the road from our beloved Queen’s Park

Great days followed none more than as an 8 year old we had the best day in 1981 when we beat Northamptonshire with Dustys famous dive and we had a few highs and many many lows following Derbyshire but when we did win it seemed so much sweeter especially when we beat Yorkshire!!

After listening to as much as possible throughout the day and dawning that something special was about to happen I watched the last ten overs on the stream and after literally wearing out the floor in my kitchen I gave a massive punch in the air looked to the skies and simply said

“Dad they did it that was for you “

A wonderful emotional day and don’t mind admitting I’ve shed a few tears tonight

    Derbyshire la la la !!!

    1. Oh my goodness, you brought a tear to my eye. I’m proud that my son was part of this special memory for you and your dad. A great team performance.

    2. Sorry to hear about your Dad, John.

He will have loved that one. I think a lot of us felt that same emotion and like you, I owe my love of the county cricket team to my Dad. He is equally stoked tonight!

  7. A terrific game and wonderful finish. Cohen played an excellent supporting role to H-P but let's not forget Godleman's partnership with Madsen which provided a solid platform. I saw H-P's debut inning last year and he's a real talent - a question of deciding his right position in the batting order.
With Leics outplaying Lancashire and with only five games, no reason why Derbyshire shouldn't really challenge for the top spot.

  8. I have such a positive feeling about us for this brief season. Our bowling attack feels that little bit more stronger with a couple of new additions, and the fight the batters showed under pressure was phenomenonal. Honestly felt like we had just won the championship... Although beating Notts always feels like that.

    Long may it continue!

  9. Derbyshire la la la as the chant goes, what an amazing result that was against all the odds. What a game as well two sides giving it their all, Derbyshire that bit more obviously. Who should we fear now after that result?, Lancashire will be tough as will Yorkshire but we should fear nobody else. My only concern is the lack of a fifth batsman, could Wood do a job at five. Anyhow let's celebrate a fine victory tonight, well done Derbyshire.

  10. Amazing win. Watched nearly all of 4 days but then had to take my boy to footy training. I coach as well so had to leave my phone in the car. The whoop of joy on finding out the result was, well I think you know!

I would also like to thank the Derby Telegraph for their unrivalled coverage of Derbyshire Cricket. At a time that Aldi are opening new supermarkets in the area the fact that they still have time to report on local sport is amazing.

    Ooh!!!!!!!

  11. Well, what a wonderful surprise, eh?
    Bravo, lads! One and all!
To reach such a total with one ball to spare is a splendid blend of history-making and tremendous excitement.

    As ever, great write-up, Peakfan.
Wish to echo a lot of the comments already made, such as Snapper's.
    Lovely to hear from Denise.
Also noted Hameed, entering twice from stage right...(!)
Critch - play for Tea, next time, please.

Massive congratulations to the DCCC team and staff.
    Excellent victory, lads! Bravo!

    Der-by-schur, la-la-laaa!

  12. Like many of us, I suspect, I wasn't overly confident going into today, and much less so at 234-6 when it seems like too big an ask. How wrong was I?! The confidence and pride that the entire team should take forward into the next games will stand them in excellent stead. This could be a very exciting season!

  13. This was really an exciting finish, it finished at around 1.20 A.M. in the morning Perth time, thanks to the terrific B.B.C. local online commentary.

I saw Hudson-Prentice Against Northants at Chesterfield last year, impressed me so much with his bowling and batting.
Totally agree he bats far to low in the order.

    Great to have cricket back.

  14. How fantastic was that, the way they performed all the match was what we hoped for with a team full of people who can chip in with the bat. Other than probably the latter part of Notts first innings someone stood up and contributed, we fought back from adversity rather that capitulate as would have happened a few seasons ago. Being such a performance in the first game of the season, it suddenly brings all that pre season expectation and excitement back for the rest of this shortened season. The players and coaching staff should be congratulated on coming out of the blocks so quickly, we should only have Yorkshire to fear, I dont know whether the England players will be back with Lancs etc. by the time we play the rest of the teams, but roll on Leic. lets hope Ben has got his runs and we dont get another old Derbyshire player (or 3 at Leic!) make hay against us!

  15. What a great advert for county cricket and a wonderful performance from the Derbyshire eleven. It seems to have generated a lot of interest, hopefully a few of the people who might not usually follow the county so closely will continue to do so.

For relatively inexperienced players such as Hudson-Prentice and Cohen to keep their cool in such a situation is remarkable, and to come out on top against a Nottinghamshire side with such experience in its ranks is some achievement.

It was pleasing to see how much playing for their county meant to players on both teams. Leus du Plooy and Fynn Hudson-Prentice particularly for ourselves and Jake Ball in the post match interview was absolutely distraught. He put some effort in during that last session and deserves credit for that commitment.

Credit also to the coaching set up who seem to be creating a environment that brings the best out in the players and who have identified some good cricketers who we can build a side with. The future looks promising!

  18. Wow indeed. I didnt think I could make a coherent comment last night. Who neeeds crowds.

Any match where all four results are possible at the start of the last over is extra special, but this one had a fairytale ending for Michael Cohen. One record I only found out today was that this was the highest winning fourth innings score at Trent Bridge since 1922!

I've been a fan of Fynn H-P since his first match for Derbyshire. He deserves to be moved up the batting order.
