Lancashire v Derbyshire T20 - QUARTER FINALS HERE WE COME!

Derbyshire 162-3 (Madsen 69, Godleman 57, Hughes 22*)

Lancashire 151-9 (Livingstone 58, Rampaul 3-19)

Derbyshire won by 11 runs

Wow, wow, wow!

What an incredible, thrilling, professional way to make the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast! To go to fortress Old Trafford and beat a Lancashire side that has largely carried all before them in the competition was the cherry on the icing on the cake for Derbyshire.

We could have qualified anyway, relying on the results elsewhere and the likelihood of Durham winning their two remaining games was slim. But no need to worry, because Billy Godleman's boys made it three from three in the final run in, each game won by tight bowling, brilliant fielding and sensible batting.

Once again the skipper and Wayne Madsen led from the front, each posting fifties and helping to set a target that was always going to be challenging, on a ground where it tends to get slower as the game goes on. The pair are a modern-day Wright and Kirsten, with Billy's 1750 runs in all cricket this summer almost matched by Wayne's 1654, but how they have set an  example for the rest of a young side.

There was a danger in trying to overreach, and score too many, but they took us to the point where it was going to be competitive, before Alex Hughes' crucial late onslaught took us past the 160 signpost on this ground that usually reads 'challenging'.

No one in the country has scored more one-day runs than Billy this summer, his 940 runs a tribute to how he has reinvented himself as an unorthodox yet hugely successful player in the format. You probably wouldn't teach a young batsman to adopt his methods, but you would be proud if he or she was anywhere near as successful. Wayne meanwhile continued to show how he has been one of the unluckiest players in the country to not gain international recognition. There are still few I would want in the middle in his place when runs were most needed, and again he delivered, three sixes helping to accelerate after a slow start.

And yet...that Lancashire batting line up is long and powerful. Davies, so often a catalyst for a big score, went second ball to van Beek, but Croft and Livingstone have scored a lot of runs quickly, and looked to be getting settled, before Ravi Rampaul took two in two balls, Croft caught in the deep and Bohannon bowled.

It was nip and tuck through the middle overs, but with Critchley, Reece and Hughes slowly strangling the run rate. All three did splendidly, Hughes delivering a key wicket by having Livingstone caught by Daryn Smit, but it was only when Reece removed the dangerous Glenn Maxwell that the win started to really look 'on'.

Still there was Vilas, a fine player, but the final key moment came when he chanced two against the speed over the ground and the arm of Anuj Dal. It was a big mistake, and Rampaul's excitment as he removed the bails after a pinpoint throw was clear. It left James Faulkner as the man to get the red rose home, with 29 still needed from the last three overs and 24 from the last two after Ravi bowled a terrific over.

Once again, Fynn Hudson-Prentice delivered under pressure, bowling a fine penultimate one where only eight were scored, six in one blow to Faulkner, before he perished to the next, caught by the safe hands of Madsen.

I had hoped that Ravi might have a dozen to play with on the last, instead he had sixteen and needed only five. Wonderful death bowling by the third senior player who has set such an example this summer. It took him to 21 wickets for the competition and he finished with the astonishing figures of 3-19. He has taken 70 wickets in all cricket this year, looked and stayed fit and has been outstanding. The overweight and disappointing bowler of 2018 has been replaced by the cunning, skilled international bowler that we thought had gone forever. Whatever your team, I doubt you have had a better bowler this summer in T20 cricket than Ravi Rampaul, an economy rate of just 6.71 underlining his value to the side.

Reaching the knockout stages is a huge achievement, for a young team and for Dominic Cork. Their four senior players have led by example, Smit's peerless wicket-keeping and sage advice being invaluable to the skipper. The youngsters and they have clearly responded to Dominic Cork's coaching style and against all the odds they have got through a very strong group. When one considers they didn't manage that last year with Ferguson, Riaz and Viljoen in the side, the scale of the achievement is clear.

Finally, a word about Dominic Cork. A few people, myself included, were slightly sceptical about how much influence a coach could have on a group of players. When we couldn't find or afford a second overseas we brought in two players, Darren Stevens and Boyd Rankin, who haven't offered much. A few even said we should have spent the money on another overseas instead, but as notoveryet pointed out the other day, few of them have made a major contribution around the country.

Cork, doubtlessly in the same bullish manner that he always showed on the pitch, has galvanised his team and inspired them to play sensible, aggressive, intelligent and purposeful cricket. There have been blips, when the plan wasn't carried out as it should have been, but the plan has come together and it has increasingly proved effective. It has been siege mentality, everyone against Derbyshire stuff, and the erstwhile star all-rounder who became a respected pundit has now emerged with great credibility as a coach

We will be away from home for the quarter final, but in this form, whoever we play will know they have been in a game.

And if we can make finals day....now that WOULD be something.

Well done guys. There's a lot of proud supporters with broad smiles tonight.

Watched it all thanks to Lancs coverage and was running around the living room when we won. A shame we'll probably be at Hove midweek when few can make it and of course we'll be massive outsiders but then again we were today and with momentum who knows who we can upset.

    Fantastic effort.

  2. Fantastic performance. And a huge success story qualifying. Fingers crossed we can make the finals day. I would like to know why Reece didn’t bat and why Critchley opened. It didn’t work and we need to make sure we stick to the formula that has worked. Reece and Godleman have had some very good partnerships and that was a left field move that could have cost us if there was no valid reason. Anyway, what a great performance by many of the team. And corky great work. What has happened to watt also? I know he was on international duty but his last game was a while ago. We have 3 signings that don’t even get a game Stevens, Rankin and Watt. Imagine if we got recruitment right to supplement the cracking bunch of lads we have. Anyone think we have any money to get a signing for the 1/4s? A top bowler perhaps. Send Rankin back to Ireland maybe?

    1. Wonder why Watt hasn't been around.

    2. Playing for Scotland, but this for me is our strongest eleven now, unless we come up on a real turner...

  3. Agree PF a really great performance against a team with two top overseas T20 specialists, Livingstone, Jennings, Vilas et al. No doubt they were up for it and it was apparently their largest ever T20 attendance outside the games against Yorkshire. A few key moments; Madsen's six off the free hit, and the way in which he and Godleman dealt with Parkinson, Hughes' little cameo at the end, Ravi's bowling, the Vilas run out which was a greedy two but terrific from Dal and another good bowling performance by Critchley.
I was with a couple of my neighbours who don't usually go to cricket and they were impressed and it was a really good advert for T20. Have to say it was good to see the Lancashire supporters less than happy.
It will be a difficult QF - looks like Sussex away but regardless the team have really fought back in the last three games after that unfortunate evening against Leics.

  4. Hands up Who could see that coming three wins on the spin?, And one at fortress Old Trafford where Lancashire rarely get beaten. after last week's debacle
v Leicestershire this was a stunning comeback from being well on the ropes!. The whole team pulled together fantastically... and with Dave Houghton/dominic Cork at the helm ... Aided and abetted by captain billy..Wayne Madsen.. Ravi rampaul et al..a truly inspirational series of wins. after that orrible fixture last week v the foxes. dccc can be very proud.... I don't know who was more excited whilst listening/watching today. Me or Dave fletch Fletcher haha the signal kept going and I had to switch to Radio Lancashire and I must say. They was very magnanimous. And complementary on derbyshires victory. Unlike some other commentators for other counties that shall remain nameless. Next match Thursday vs the Aussies with the world's best batsman Steve Smith and Company. If I thought I could get a ticket I probably would travel across the East Midlands to attend. I'm not sure what the ticket situation is going to be like if I just turn up at the gate?. Work Commitments forbid me me to definitely pre-purchased ticket).. I won't know till the day If can indeed attend!..i shall of course be supporting them from afar if I can't get there.. its a very exciting time to be a falcon supporter right now for sure.

They should look into it. A 55 seater luxury coach at thirty quid a pop would surely get filled.

  6. A great performance by all the team, batsmen and bowlers backed up by tight fielding, highlighted by Dals run out of vilas. The last week has shown what falcons are capable of and whoever we get should not be feared. Well played to all.

  7. Very proud of what the club has achieved. Much improved in all 3 formats. The defeats in the championship have largely been aggressive attempts to win where we have lost by very small margins. The one day cup also did not reflect are performance levels. Not just the players but other staff at the club for pulling in near capacity crowds for the home t20 matches are well deserving of high praise.

  8. Great effort. Godleman and Madsen have been superb the last few games with the pressure on and the bowlers excellent. Alex Hughes should be in any T20 team we put out. No idea why he wasn’t in at the start.
Looks like Sussex which would be difficult but they would be without Archer, Mills and Rashid Khan which gives us hope!

  10. A team with 5 non UK players (even without 2nd official o/s player) makes this somewhat bittersweet, not looking at the inherent weakness of the north division either, but hope we can go on and win it.

    1. Is that the North division that has won the competition for the last 6 years? And had an all ‘North’ final in 4 of them?

      Delete
    2. yes because what happened in the past is a true indicator of the present...rolls eyes...a couple of teams dominating one year doesnt take away its weaker than the south, majority of division 2 teams etc etc. South group has far stronger counties in it, bar Glamorgan and Gloucester (who are having a good year for once). Still short form is a lottery and evens the playing field, see Netherlands and Ireland beating England in the form.

Groups should be mixed up but of course cannot due to money.

    3. Using division 2 status in the county championship as a barometer of quality for a t20 side when the top two teams in the south group, the top team in the north group and the defending champions who are also 3rd in the north group are all division 2 teams seems quite strange to me.

    4. who have all been in div 1 recently...teams whom generally have big squads capable of performing in all forms.

the south is going down to the wire as it does every year, the north is decided bar the odd place as ever with games to spare. Same teams dominating.

  11. I did say go with the players we had and save the money. We didn’t need anyone in the end
The 2 imports did little to improve the team if anything and probably cost us money we didn’t need to spend . Well done lads Let’s win this now

  12. The team is to be congratulated on a string of fine performances against mostly better resourced counties.

I hope that a strong XI will be selected to play Australia. Too often counties field a weakened side. I accept that the days of the touring match being the highlight of the season are long gone and that there won't be a repeat of the marvellous encounter in 1997 when Derbyshire reached a target of 371 despite Warne's seven wickets. Obviously a few players deserve a rest and some of the squad members an opportunity to show their talents but with plenty of media attention on Steve Smith's return it would not reflect well on the county if it were a one-sided affair.

    1. It’s gonna have to be close to a first team unless we play trialists! No contracted batters in the 2s apart from Dahl. Think all the young bowlers are injured. Lace Out for the season Smit could play as well as Harvey I suppose

    2. It's a decent looking squad with all of the first choice batsmen playing apart from Wayne Madsen. Rampaul and van Beek are rested as you'd expect, with the bowlers including Conners, Mckiernan and Gleadall, all presumably recovered from injury, plus Melton, the Zimbabwean fast bowler who did well with the 2nds this year. I'm a little surprised that Reece is in the squad, as I thought his workload demanded a rest when he can take it. He seemed to have a problem at Old Trafford, as he was the last out onto the field at the break and didn't seem to do any warm-ups, having not batted in his usual position, but seemed to be OK bowing and fielding. With Mitchell Starc likely to be fired up for getting his place back, a victory for us might be getting all of our batsmen through without injury.
