Derbyshire v Middlesex preview

Fynn Hudson-Prentice makes his first-class county debut against Middlesex at the Pattonair County Ground tomorrow.

He replaces Anuj Dal in the announced twelve, and with Tom Lace in there, but unable to play against his own county as part of the loan agreement, Fynn will take his place in an otherwise unchanged side.

It reads: Godleman, Reece, Madsen, du Plooy, Hughes, Critchley, Hudson-Prentice, Hosein, van Beek, Palladino, Rampaul, Lace

I assume that Luis Reece will therefore continue as opener, unless Harvey Hosein is elevated, as there would appear no other viable option in the squad. du Plooy should now be cemented at four, after his excellent century against Australia A and Hudson-Prentice will provide both depth for the batting and an additional genuine bowling option for Billy Godleman.

The visitors haven't enjoyed the best of summers, but their side is packed with talented batsmen, while the evergreen Tim Murtagh is their leading wicket-taker this summer. The current spell of good weather suggests that both sides might fancy a bat tomorrow, so there may well be the rarity value of a toss at Derby...

I am away with family in delightful Berwick on Tweed this week, so will watch and report as and when I am able.

Do please keep your comments coming in please, and let me know if you agree that we can win this one!

  1. Why has Lace been named in the Derbyshire squad if he carnt play? The fact that Derbyshire are down to only four recognised batsmen highlights the inadequacies of Derbyshire's squad

  2. Yes, it makes no sense to name a player who is ruled out from playing. Frankly, it's a bit bonkers. Why not include someone on the fringes (Wood, maybe, or Dustin Melton) to give them experience of being part of a first class game.

  3. Defeat and onto t20. Batting looks feeble going into that. Just cut and paste from previous years peakfan I'm afraid I.e. that's what they can do, when they're in the mood no stopping them etc......

Name Lace (who like so many pros do flopped playing in the local league yesterday) when he can't play? What sort of insanity is that exactly?

    1. As a home game they could bring someone in at short notice, as they did with Dal when Madsen was injured before the game.
You could argue Dal could have been in there, but Lace is a very good fielder

We should probably be grateful Lace hasn't been recalled again by Middlesex to play AGAINST us!!

  6. Perhaps Derbyshire could get Ben Slater back on loan for the rest of the season?
