Derbyshire v Surrey day 3

Derbyshire 153 and 288 (Wainwright 56 not, Elstone 47, Borrington 38); Surrey 421

Surrey need 21 to win

There's not much to say tonight and little time to do so because of extensive family commitments.

Suffice to say that while a number of batsmen got their heads down and battled today, no one built on their hard work and made the big score that was needed if we were to give Surrey a tricky final day.

We needed to score 400-plus to do that and at the moment the likelihood of our doing that is slim. The spirit and the will is there, but the side lacks a form player who would make a difference. Realistically, one from Moore, Madsen and North needed to make a score and none did. All made starts and will be disappointed not to have built on them.

Fair play to David Wainwright, who is in fine nick, as well as to Scott Elstone and Paul Borrington, who got their heads down and made the visitors fight. Sadly, it was not enough.

More from me tomorrow.

  1. Rubbish from top to bottom. Wainwright is embarrassing our so called batsmen at present and maybe he should be batting higher up the order. Which batsman is going to get the runs this season?. I'm not confident any will. Very poor stuff indeed Derbyshire.

  2. Next year for me our priority is to get an overseas player who is going to make a significant difference.

The signing last year of Shiv on paper looked good with his battling talents likely to be crucial. However at best he had an ok season without pulling up any trees.
I know we have an option for another year but as his powers decline and his limitations in one day cricket are shown I do not think we should take up this option.
Marcus North has quite frankly been a huge disappointment in the championship where he seems yo think every innings is a T20 game . Evidence today where he slog swept Ansari for 6 and then was bowled next ball going for another big hit. Not the best example to the team when you are striving to save a game!
Next year we need either an opener to partner Moore ( Guptill? ) or the way things are going an opening bowler to partner Footitt.
Either way it needs to be someone who is hungry and NOT at the back end of their career and can be a match winner in one day cricket.
    Your thoughts Peakfan?

Despite the talk of the future this season threatens to be hugely damaging. At this point I can barely face dragging myself to Queens Park let alone Derby.

  5. Interesting point about the overseas player as I was thinking about that yesterday. As much as Chanderpaul has been a good 'team' player he hasn't really made the big scores and fired other than the great innings at Somerset and a 20/20 chase against Lancs last year.
It may be that we need a different type of batsmen in there at the top of the order who can maybe take the initiative more and get us going. Having said that we could do with at least another 3 batsmen that could bat at the moment. Having said that it may be that Don Bradman would have struggled to shore up our batting and I'm just clutching at straws!
