Lancashire v Derbyshire

In what was another very important game, we took a hell of a beating today. No other words for it really. When you struggle to make 80 in 20 overs then see your opponentsknock them off in less than ten without losing a wicket it is nothing less than a good hiding.

Such a defeat is hard to take from a decent side, but no one would call this Lancashire outfit a good one.

I´m obviously a long way from the action, but for me the margin of defeat makes this the low point of the season. I thought and hoped we were better than this.

Essentially we now need to win every game from here to qualify. Not impossible, but if performances aren´t better than this there´s not a hope in hell. On such days you feel sorry for the ones who went along to support them.

C´mon guys. We know you´re better than this...

  1. Which clown at the County Ground said we didn't need a second overseas player for the 20/20?

  2. It was pitiful in the extreme. I was embarrased to be a Derbyshire supporter today and those players should be even more embarrased. Absolute rubbish from start to finish. Ive a bloody good mind to write and ask them for an admission refund and petrol money.

  3. Well I only joined again this season after Messrs. Amott, Griffin and Grant all promised us all that John Morris would be given a new contract. I feel that after after they sacked Morris they should have offered members a refund if they wanted it. I would have been first in the queue and will not be joining next season.

  4. It doesn't help when our number 7 batsman has only contributed 2 runs throughout the whole 20/20 campaign! Surely Tom Poyton must be given a go in the last 4 group games. To continue to play Sutton is making a joke of the Chairman's play youngsters policy.

  5. Agree with the comments - embarrassing to be a Derbyshire supporter today. Think we played/attempted no more than half a dozen attacking shots all innings - there seemed to be no plan at all at what score we should be aiming for and the innings descended into farce. They came out with attacking intent and showed there was nothing wrong with the pitch and we again dropped a dolly of a catch to add to the impression of a pub team. Can't imagine any Derbyshire fan will be paying good money to watch another 20/20 performance like that - I know I certainly will not.

  6. Please do not blame Don Amott,

  7. Don Amott did not sack John Morris , they are good friends, Chris Grant did, just putting the record straight,

  8. I never said that Amott sacked John Morris and I know that Don wanted to give John a new contract until the 'Fun Boy Three' kicked off. I would never blame Don Amott for anything, the man is a Derbyshire Legend! You have got to agree with me through that since Don Amott stood down as Chairman it has been a farce both on and off the pitch. I still want to know if Don was present at the Committee Meeting when John and Andy were sacked but no one at the club will give us the truth.

  9. The problem is we have no player, with the possible exception of Guptill and Whiteley, who have any consistency. Far too many are failing far too often. One score in five or six innings is not good enough and that,s what we are getting from most of our batsmen.

Someone mentioned dropped catches. That too is happening far too regularly. A pub team?. We weren,t even that good today. It was a disgrace.

  10. I gather that our defeat today was by a record margin!
We will get another record on Saturday at home to Northampton as the game will be watched by the lowest ever crowd to watch a domestic 20/20!

  11. Don Amott was not at the committee meeting when Chris Grant sacked John Morris,, John was sacked by the new Chairman even before the meeting, i understand no one had contacted Don Amott for his opinion, a disgrace, We need Don Amott back

  12. If there is any truth in the last post then Chris Grant must consider his position at the club I'm affraid.

  13. Peakfan, if Chris Grant has been upto these sort of tricks then you can't brush this one under the table!

  15. In all fairness we have been performing respectably in the main in the T20 apart from the Lancs debacle. The nature of T20 is that batsmen take risks and get out, few players have a high average. The away win against Glam showed signs of progress. Doubt whether we have enough cash for a 2nd overseas player, but would have had Usman K if Aussies hadn't called him up.

  16. It,s not who we haven,t got that worries me ,it,s some of those we have got. Anyway,we should get a few more points this week coz it,s forecast to rain!.

You can all forget about Arnott coming back. It wont happen. What do you want him back for anyway?. It his man that,s got us in this mess in the first place and don,t forget we lost 180 grand last year, which Arnott admitted was his fault. And we finished bottom of the league,in case anyone has forgotten. And we were crap at one day cricket aswell. Some much for Arnott and Morris.

  17. Agree with Marc. I have never read so much rubbish. Last season we finished bottom of the County Championship Division 2.. there is no lower the club can go from what happened last season. This season theres been mixed results in the 20/20's and some championship wins.

Whoever said theres going to be the record lowest crowd etc is talking complete rubbish. Were you not there on Friday? Those people came to watch the new young players that have originated from Derbyshire and have played their cricket locally, not some kolpak nobody that we seemed to always turn out when Morris was around.

This is my first comment on this blog and I've been shocked at how negative some people on this site are towards the side and the club!! Derbyshire arent going to become County Champions overnight, its going to take a great deal of hard work and progression, obviously yesterday wasnt a step in the right direction, but a hard fought game on Friday and a championship win in the week are! Playing youngsters that have been developed by the club are. Bringing in players with real county/international experience are with cricketing credentials are!
From what I've seen this season Derbyshire are competing a lot better whilst playing younger talented players alongside the regulars has achieved better things than while we had a side full of Kolpak players... the club now has a real future and has a direction in which to go in. Nothing ever goes according to play, and yesterday it things obviously didnt. But from what I've seen this season and from what the scorecards tell us Derbyshire are more competetive from last year and are doing it whilst playing players that have a future at the club.

  18. Marc, never underestimate what Don Amott has done for the club and I am sure that if he took out what the club owes him we would be bankrupt. If Grant did sack Morris and Brown without consulting Amott then Grant should resign immediately.
I never felt that Grant should have walked in as Chairman anyway. He should have served at least a couple of years on the committee first so we could see what he could do. The Grant affair reminds me of Michael Knighton at Manchester United.

  19. I see that Poyton got a century in the second team. Surely he has to be given a go in the first team!

  20. If Chris Grant did sack Morris and Brown before the big committee meeting and he didn't consult all of the committee then surely this is playing into the hands of the compensation claims from Morris and Brown. Whatever compensation Messrs Morris and Brown receive will never be enough but my worry is that the compensation could bankrupt the club. My view though is that if Grant sacked them then he should pick up the compensation tab himself.

  22. Morris and Browns contracts were up this year. Whatever compensation they may recieve will be no more than they would have payed anyway. You are not talking about a fortune here,by any means.

I don,t know how much money Arnott has invested in the club, only he knows that. He will be getting a decent return on it,thats for sure. Whether he leaves it in the club is up to him. Ive nothing personal against Arnott, Morris or anyone else. My criticism of the previous regime is based purely on results,or a lack of as the case was. Morris was Arnotts man and they BOTH have to take responsibility for the woeful lack of success,on the field.

As ive said before,we are not a good side at the moment, but the groundwork has been put in place to hopefully improve this. We were going nowhere fast under the previous management. I find it amazing that anyone could support Morris and co,given their awful record. He had the time and failed,it,s as simple as that.

  23. Broadly speaking I agree Marc. 2010 was the big year for Morris. He'd had time to build his team and there was genuine optimism at the start of that season. Unfortunately it was a disaster. Combine that with the players attitude towards him and his departure was always likely.

I do wish people would stop demanding Grant's resignation or Amott's return and such like. None of it is going to happen. Maybe some things could have been handled better and I've already commented that the new "ground breaking" youth strategy does not particularly impress me but it is reality. We have to move on.
