Worcestershire won by 175 runs
Only late and spirited resistance from Luis Reece (49) Amrit Basra (40) and Nick Potts (29) took the game into the afternoon. Derbyshire recovered from 39-6 to 157 all out, but that late resistance shouldn't mask another woeful batting display.
I take nothing away from Ben Allison, who took 6-42 in a fine display of bowling, but nothing in the demeanour of the Derbyshire top order suggested that the home side would need to wait unduly long for their end of season party.
So it transpired.
I will have more to say in my end of season review, which should be published tomorrow morning.

I have just heard MA on Radio Derby. Apparently criticism of him is water off a ducks back as it comes from ignorant people who do not understand. This is a new low, we now have a head coach who doesn’t deliver anything and then insults those of us who think that he is part of the problem.

Take away Madsen’s effort in the first innings and Reece and the tail enders today, the batting performance has been unacceptable.
ReplyDeleteWe bowled reasonably well at times, but let Worcester off the hook yesterday evening. Whether Waite’s effort was really crucial is debatable.
I think most other clubs would have moved Arthur on long before now. He is way out of excuses.

Well played Luis Reece. You batted like a competent first class cricketer, who knows their game but can also bring a plan to a particular game situation. A hand injury contributed to his innings being brought to a premature close. Shame, deserved a 50. As for most of the rest, oh dear! Body language of the batters was redolent of reluctantly facing Lillee and Thomson on a quick wicket at Perth Ashes 74-75. But they weren’t facing Lillee and Thomson. Struggled to see a plan or purpose with the way they went about the innings. That should be a minimum requirement. Sad end to the season.

ReplyDeleteVery predictable end to a very predictable season. It’s easy work being a Derbyshire player. Completely carried by two players this season although a different two to the couple who have done it for years and years. The rest just about manage one half decent performance every six or Seven games to keep in the team. Same for next season with the same excuses and the same positions in each competition although the championship might possibly be slightly lower. Interesting that he signed the left arm seamer said he very much liked what he saw and obviously liked it so much he never picked him( other for the game when he didn’t get a chance to bowl) also picking Basra then batting him at 8. What a wonderful confidence booster that must be to a young batsman. Dismal end to a on the whole dismal season

DeleteIt definiately had a "last game of the season" feel to that performance. To get the best out of Wayne Madsen he needs to come in when it isn't next to nothing (or nothing in one case this season) for 2. The top 3 line up needs a good looking at before next season. With the main top 3 all averaging below 30 (Came 24.52, Montgomery 26.04, Jewell 22.35) this means on a number of occasions the middle order is under pressure facing the new ball.

Off field food options at my latest CC visits equally so. A few nuked pasties and sausage rolls is not a catering operation. How hard is it to provide a few sandwiches, decent cake and breakfast sandwiches to start the day off?
We're not all interested in beer either.
Come on DCCC, up your game and show us some value as day supporters or ST holders.

Totally agree Andy. When I visited this year and stayed in the hotel on the ground, I would have taken a sarnie back to the hotel, but there were none, as you say. And since I didn't fancy navigating Pentagon island just to get to Morrisons, I ate at the hotel... Opportunity missed!
DeleteThe top order had almost lost the will to fight for the 333 needed to win. There was some surprising lower-order resistance, which at least ensured we weren't skittled out for 50. However, this was very poor. Reece was clearly in a lot of pain and hampered by it.

Glad this season is over, this game seems to sum up the season nicely.
ReplyDeleteTowards the end of last season I wrote this year off, hoping you know who only had one year left, after the first 2 games I was hopeful we could actually do something this season, I had deluded myself.
We are in fact worse than last season, why because the 2 teams below we managed to lose to them 3 times.
6 months off to try and recover, I will probably come back refreshed and positive for it to be dashed after the first day's play (that is the hopeful version). In reality I might as well just write the next 2 years off or however long it takes for changes to happen.

An end of season performance not worth worrying about ? We have suffered many of these performances since the start of the season , Old Trafford being the first. If we are prepared to accept such low standards we are heading in entirely the wrong direction. Players and coaching staff have not been good enough and change is required before we sink even lower. ReplyDeleteWhat a difference a year makes. Exactly 12 months ago we were celebrating a massive win over Kent after Wayne Madsen made 198 and Louis Reece 211. What has gone wrong since then? Obviously all the injuries to our squad of fast bowlers hasn't helped but the loss of form of our first three batsmen is almost inexplicable. As has been pointed out their averages have been far below what is acceptable.
ReplyDeleteSo where do we go from here? There is talent in our team so why has our batting collapsed so often this season? Have our players run out of patience with MA just as we, the supporters, did some time ago? Is it a question of attitude? Are they showing their discontent with MA by not giving their best?
I said before that a few seasons ago our players revolted against John Morris and he was sacked. Is a repetition of this event the only way we are going to get rid of MA?

ReplyDeleteI’m as gutted as anyone by this season and that the MA era has been pretty much been a cricketing disaster for us.
ReplyDeleteIf there’s one tiny crumb of comfort today it’s that Basra might just be a replacement for Dal if he can become a stump to stump bowler with a bit of movement and be able to bat ‘properly’ as high as 5/6 or be a counter attacking 7/8. Time will tell….
I'm not one for calling for sackings at the drop of a hat, you see too much of that in football. However, on any reasonable metric, MA has had a long stint and as a county cricket team we have nothing to show for it. We have had 2 England players this season which is great, but that shouldn't paper over the cracks. There is nothing to lose, cricketwise if not financially, if we change horses. And actually, the longer MA stays, the more the chance we lose money anyway because people decide not to renew, turn up on a whim for a day's cricket etc anyway.

I don't know why, - and this isn't just this season - , but when we have to chase a total or defend one, we seem so timid. Our top order push it around, play and miss, and then they're out. It's so predictable. We need top order batsmen who will attack, believing in the head that we can win or stave off defeat. We need the mentality Nye has when he comes out to bat.

The bowling line up , if all are fit looks strong: Abbas, Aitchison, Welch, Potts, Bashir, Brown, Chapell, Moore.
Mickey Arthur is by no means the first manager to find winning with Derbyshire a difficult prospect.
I think it’s one trophy in 30 years , Div 2 championship in 2012. It should be more if you look at other similar counties like Leicestershire and Northants.
I don’t see how changing the manager is going to improve things in the short term.Martin
