Seconds win by one-wicket!

The young Derbyshire second team won an extraordinary one-wicket victory over SACA at Chesterfield today.

59-3 overnight quickly became 68-4 with the wicket of Zak Chappell, before Niall McHale (37) shared in a stand of 64 with Mitch Wagstaff.

When the former was dismissed, Joe Hawkins quickly followed, before 15-year old Theo Brown came in to share a stand of 85 with Wagstaff.

The latter proceeded to an excellent century before being dismissed for 105, which brought together Brown and George Blount. Their stand of 68 took Derbyshire to within ten runs of the win, before Blount was run out, then Brown was dismissed for an outstanding 87.

It left Jake Green and Sam Keeling-Wright to seal the one-wicket win, after a wonderful game of cricket.

  1. These streams often highlight some 'interesting' umpiring....

It's a shame young Theo didn't have recourse to DRS. 😒

    1. Yes, that was a poor decision. Looked like Khushi got a poor one in the first innings too. Must be especially galling when you are playing in hope of a deal somewhere and get sawn off...

    2. I think in general the old saying of giving the batsman the benefit of the doubt seems to have been reversed to giving it to the bowlers. One of the reasons there are so many low scoring games now

  2. A good win for the 2nds. I saw Theo Brown at Belper when the 2nds played Middlesex 2nds, he looked a very competent keeper and if he can maintain his batting talent through the age groups he will be a great all rounder prospect. Although only 15 hopefully the Club can do whatever necessary to retain him!

    1. Other clubs can't poach him anyway, it is not allowed between academies. I look forward to seeing his progress in the years ahead and expect him to play in the first team next year, perhaps in the one-day cup?
