Durham v Derbyshire day 1

Durham 302-7 (Clark 51, Bedingham 49, Robinson 48 Aitchison 4-57)

v Derbyshire

It was a day of hard graft at The Riverside for Derbyshire today. When the captains tossed the coin at the start of the game I think most people would have hoped that winning it would see the successful side making quick inroads with the ball.

It didn't really work out that way. There was movement but perhaps not to the level that the green pitch suggested might be the case. There have been a few such surfaces like that this year and I suspect that had Durham won the toss they may well have gone the same way as Wayne Madsen.

Nick Potts was preferred to Rory Haydon, presumably to reinforce his confidence after the T20, but also to offer greater depth to the batting. Rory can consider himself unlucky, but his time will come again and Mickey Arthur is fortunate to have the choices that are available to him.

Mohammad Abbas was back and his usual metronomic self, but I just wonder if he has lost a little nip in his bowling. He will rarely give much away and he makes the batters work, but his average this summer compares unfavourably with those of previous years. Hopefully he proves me wrong tomorrow and at Chesterfield next week, but eight wickets so far at 45 runs each was not what supporters expected from an attack leader of his reputation.

All of the Durham batters got in and then were dismissed. Derbyshire will be especially pleased to have got Alex Lees and David Bedingham back in the pavilion fairly cheaply, both having good records against them. Yet when rain interrupted play in the final session, Clark and Robinson were well set and Durham looked good for around 400.

Yet the new ball removed both of them, a wicket each for Abbas and Aitchison. The latter owed much to Guest's agility behind the stumps and he had a good day, up until he put down one he would class as routine in the last ten overs. That could yet come back to bite Derbyshire, as Ben Raine, the fortunate batter, is a dangerous lower order hitter, as is Matthew Potts and both were still there at the close.

I would suggest Durham the happier of the two sides at the end of the day. If you are still batting after being asked to you cannot complain too much. Anything over 350 is a decent score on this ground and Ben Raine will hope to continue his excellent record against Derbyshire tomorrow.

Finally tonight, a word for Ben Aitchison. I don't think he has missed a day's cricket this year and throughout he has presented problems for opposition batters. His 32 red ball wickets at 23 represents bowling of the highest standard and he is as good as any on the circuit right now..

Add in another sharp catch at slip today - not forgetting that memorable century at Lord's - he will not want this summer to end.

A good day's cricket, then. We will get a better idea of the game's direction by this time tomorrow.

  1. Yes I agree with you Peakfan that would have been one heck of a long tail if Rory had been kept in.Yes Ben Aitchison top drawer now let's hope none of the big boys don't pinch him off us!°!Topspinner.

  2. Guest takes that catch and it's 264-8, moments like that cost you games.

Raine and Potts are more than capable of inflicting further damage tomorrow. The difference between 350+ and what might have been 280/290 will likely cost us the game.

  3. Durham just edged the day. Disappointed that Haydon left out in favour of Potts. Yes Potts has had a good t20 but Haydon takes wickets and Potts is expensive.
Agree re Abbas who is yet another MA overseas bowling disappointment.
Guest has dropped far too many “ routine “ catches this season.

  4. Yes, that could be a costly drop by Guest, especially after he'd taken some good catches earlier.

Since Reece is back bowling, Derbyshire have four medium-pacers. I wonder if Potts was picked ahead of Haydon to add a bit of variety to the attack.

  5. We need quick wickets this morning, otherwise things could get out of hand. As you say Peakfan, we will be able to assess things better when we have batted.

Haydon was unlucky not to play, but it seems this was in part to lengthen the batting. Potts is also (I think) our quickest bowler so gives a bit of variety.

Abbas has been very disappointing overall. He does bowl tidily and was a little unlucky, not least with the drop by Guest. However, an average in the 40s is poor, especially given his impressive career figures.

Aitchison was excellent again and will hopefully lead the attack for a long time.

    Here’s to a good day’s cricket.

    Allez Derbyshire

Abbas looks over the hill, Haydon would've been a far better option but you've paid big money for the overseas so have to start them. As long as our batting stands firm we shouldn't lose the game

  7. If Abbas was not our overseas, he would have not been selected for this match. Haydon deserves to play, and our batting would have been unaffected. We would still have had 3 number 11s.

    1. When it was announced that Derbyshire had signed Abbas I questioned what all the the excitement was about an overseas pace bowler who would turn 36 before the season started, the reply I got on here was that he was a world class game changing bowler I appreciate he has almost 900 fc wickets and took wickets in a recent test match but on his appearances for Derbyshire he looks well past his best, Mickey has previous for signing one of his mates who is past his best Abbas looks like another one

    2. But you don't KNOW, do you KJB? Why would he NOT take wickets based on that record? Who better would you have signed? Only a regime change saw him tour Bangladesh.

      Hindsight remains a wonderful thing..

  8. At the game for the first 3 days and I think Durham have the slight advantage.
The first hour is crucial and anything 350+ puts them in the ascendancy . I am surprised that Hayden didn’t play as he came into a spluttering team and helped fashion 2 wins .
Not sure Abbas will play much after June if he makes the tour of England for Pakistan.
Ben Aitchison was excellent today and Andersson stuck at it as back up .
Top 4 need to bat time today as the wicket does offer something for the bowlers .

There have been hundreds upon hundreds of shocking days over the years for Derbyshire, but today has taken the absolute biscuit. Shambolic doesn't even come into it and there has to be changes now, let's get some of the younger talent in the side next game. If MA refuses to do so he can clear off as well

    1. Gosh, CB, I don't have to think too hard to come up with worse than that, before and during my sixty years of support. And I am not even including the last day at Manchester...
