Kent 352 and 38-2 (Haydon 2-15)
Derbyshire 304 (Reece 84, Andersson 37, Madsen 35, Dudgeon 4-78, Milnes 3-87)
Kent lead by 86 runs
So the first hour this morning made for uncomfortable viewing.
Caleb Jewell looks a shadow of the player of 2025 and has not suggested permanence in his displays so far. He has a more pronounced movement across his crease than last year and perhaps this is affecting his balance, but neither he, nor Derbyshire can afford continued failure. Were he not the overseas player, his place would be under threat and that status should not make any difference. The overseas batter is crucial to Derbyshire and Caleb's struggles are part of the reason for that of the side so far.
Mitch Wagstaff has been in a rich vein of form and if he cannot get in the side when one of his rivals is clearly struggling, one has to question why he is on the staff. He is entitled to feel harshly done by.
Harry Came played some nice shots, but his tendency to 'push' at good length balls when not quite at the pitch cost him here. As for Matthew Montgomery, he played a couple of delightful on side strokes but then 'held the pose' when Milnes brought one back into him, which made the umpire's decision considerably easier than it should have been.
It is these things that frustrate as a Derbyshire fan. You take ten wickets on the first day and have advanced the game. Poor batting cost the top order - again - and any side with aspirations of improvement simply cannot hope to do so, when putting themselves behind the eight ball with such frequency.
Since the opening day stand of 82, our first wicket has put on stands of 0, 10, 8, 9 and 30. It puts pressure on those to come and gives impetus to the opposition. When looking for small gains on the way to improvement, that's an obvious one, right there.
Yet it was a poor effort down the order. When your top nine make double figures, yet no one bar Luis Reece goes past 37, it is hugely disappointing. Kent bowled tidily, but this isn't one of the strongest attacks in the division, especially with the players they have missing. Keith Dudgeon bowled well, but before this match his wickets were costing over 40 runs each, which tells a story.
For a while, Madsen and Andersson made batting look straightforward, but enough deliveries either kept low or lifted a little to suggest that Derbyshire made the wrong call at the toss - not for the first time. It would be interesting to know if the current uncertainty around the top order was in any way a contributory factor towards this.
That Derbyshire got within fifty of the home score was down to an outstanding innings by Luis Reece. He hit five sixes in an innings that again showed his strength of character, as well as his talent. Is the county missing a trick in batting him so low in the order? You could argue that having him open with Mitch Wagstaff, as a mentor perhaps, would not weaken the batting in any way.
Is there potential in a side that leads with Reece, Wagstaff, Came, Madsen, Montgomery, Andersson, Guest etc? I really hope Jewell comes good, but an average of 18 is worrying.
When Kent went in again, the impressive Haydon removed both openers in another excellent opening spell. Rory isn't especially quick, nor does he try to be, but he puts the ball in the right areas and nips it around. His is an excellent example of someone waiting for opportunity, then grasping it with both hands when it came.
When rain brought about an early close, Kent were 86 ahead with eight wickets in hand. Probably slight favourites now, with two days to go, as the pitch won't get any better.
The first session tomorrow will be very important and whoever comes out on top in it will likely take the win points, if the threatened rain stays away long enough for a positive result.
I'd love to be optimistic, but until Arthur's men have shown they can handle pressure, I am finding that increasingly difficult.
Is Donald worth a shot too in the top order? With hopes so high at the start of the season our start has been particularly disappointing. Grant from Telford
ReplyDeleteI’m at the game and I have a couple of comments. The first is that I think that we did the right thing putting Kent in yesterday. The pitch did a lot in the morning and throughout the day. Kent in general and DBD in particular rode their luck massively. I don’t remember seeing a team play and miss so much and Zak Chappel was ridiculously unlucky yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThe pitch was still tricky today, but the last wicket partnership was great entertainment and brought two batting points and Derbys back into the game. I think we’ve actually played well on what is a good cricket pitch.
By the way, did you catch the IPL incident today where a batter was caught behind and run out twice, all from the same ball ?
I just looked it up, Andy. I tend not to watch it these days. Something you don't see every day!
DeleteI agree, Chappell was very unlucky after lunch and DBD rode his luck.
Enjoyable day, fabulous catch got Andersson.
ReplyDeleteGreat last wicket stand between Louis and Shab, may be not enough but gives us a fighting chance.
Need to have them out for 150 or less as we need to be chasing less than 200. It may come down to which side maintains it's belief they can win, just hope our boys heads don't drop.
Sorry don't believe in this unlucky business as over time it evens out and otherwise I would be a millionaire.
Should be another good day tomorrow.
Martin
Does Mickey Arthur know the saying don’t change a winning team has particular emphasis on the winning. It doesn’t normally mean constantly drawing or losing as well. We all know Hayden would not have played in this match if it wasn’t for Abbas not being available and look how brilliantly he has performed
ReplyDeleteI agree about opening with Wagstaff and Reece. Could even then have Jewell at 3 if MA feels he has to play because he's the overseas player. Personally I agree with you that Came looks steadier so would go with him.
ReplyDeleteJewell had a torrid season down under and sadly looks to be struggling to regain anything like his best form. I'd drop him and let him rebuild his confidence in the seconds ready for the Blast. Can't afford this poor form continuing into the white ball cricket as well.
Incidentally, I noticed Leicestershire move to boost their t20 firepower signing NZ's Kelly.
ReplyDeleteWe could do well to have a look at Bevon Jacob's availability given Jewell isn't firing.
So far, we don't look like a winning team in terms of our batting. Reece went into T20 mode with five sixes. Why can't others in the top order bat in a similar way? MA keeps taking about batting with aggression. Jewell looks like he's lacking in confidence. Do we stick with him? Honestly, I don't know.
ReplyDeleteJewell got 1800 runs last season and is here for the season . I think he needs supporting by the coaching staff to work through his current situation. Win the next 2 sessions and we have a chance of victory ,that has to be the mindset. No point talking line ups mid game ,we have meagre resources and need to find a way to get the best out of them …I’d open with Reece and drop Jewell to middle order ,take proactive action mid game ,and let him have a 121 with the batting coach to work on a couple of areas ….Also puts another LH bat up top .
ReplyDeleteKent haven’t been batting well ,2 early wickets will question their resolve .
As you say Peakfan, the first couple of hours tomorrow will be crucial to the outcome of this game. Did we get a little fortunate with the lbw decision against Crawley? Only saw it the once live but I instinctively thought it was sliding down.
ReplyDeleteMark, from Buxton
I think we got lucky there too, but these things tend to even out. We've had one or two this year that were contentious and there's not much you can do about it
DeleteAfter last years T20 misery, I wonder if it's time for Reece to make a return in that? He may be past his best at that format, but he's always been a rope clearer with the bat. Why he isn't opening in 4 day cricket currently is beyond me, especially with two out of form openers. Kris
ReplyDeleteFor the start of the run chase (hopefully) today, Luis should open the batting. He is clearly in form and should not be used only to marshall the tail. The current opening partnership is not working and we really need a solid start to the second innings to win this game.
ReplyDeleteAllez Derbyshire
Adrian
I have the sinking feeling that Kent have enough (187 as I write). Hope I'm wrong
ReplyDeleteMichael
187 lead that is (now 195)
ReplyDeleteMichael
Yeah, I knew what you meant, Michael. I am not overly confident in our batting unit either, though would love to be proved wrong as we romp home by 9 wickets!
DeleteRecurring theme here. Completely toothless against the lower order after getting into a half decent position. 120 odd partnership for the 7th wicket at tea. Think we all know how this ends up tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteIts turning out a copy and paste exercise for Derbyshire. 55/5 and have a team on the ropes, to 335 all out. Are any Derbyshire supporters surprised NO. Id be surprised if we score 200, never mind 335. Another defeat incoming, unless help from the weather...
ReplyDeleteThey struggle to get wickets, when the ball gets older. Is this due to a lack of pace and variation in the attack?
DeleteTo be fair, Kent allowed Derbyshire in their first innings, to get more runs than expected, so it looks like they have the same issue.
Dre.
So, we have to get 380 odd tomorrow in over 100 overs. What's the problem if we now have the aggressive team MA has been trying to build? Okay, Jewell has gone - in bad form currently), but, surely, this should be a game we should try and win, rather than bat out for a draw (which, most likely, will end in a defeat).
ReplyDeleteA frustrating pattern. Last year our batting was fantastic, but are bowling way below par. This year we seemed to have addressed the bowling side of things bringing in Abbas and Bashir, however the batting is now a little below par.
ReplyDeleteWe seem capable of blowing the top order away, only for the bottom order to add 300 runs.
It would surprise me if we saw something like the following happen today:
Derbyshire 200/3 - 280/5 - 300 all out
Nick
Day 4 will be my 11th day of live cricket, at the end of day 3 I still was positive enough to think we would have beaten Gloucestershire, this game no positivety at all now.
ReplyDeleteWon the toss and playing against another team who haven't won and look where it got us.
Yesterday after such a good start what a let down, you know when you are in real trouble when Zac starts bowling short, has a mate stated surrender bowling.
Making a strong rearguard action, won't wash, after all the pre season PR the teams performance is frankly dire despite the odd positive individual performance.
Something has to change, I don't want Maddo to finish his career with a season like this so far.
Martin
Very disappointing barring Haydon's bowling. Unfortunately expecting a heavy defeat mid-afternoon.
ReplyDeleteIt will barely go beyond lunch, Tim. First week of May and the 4-day season is already a write-off. Dave.
ReplyDeleteThe team is so fragile
