Derbyshire 625-8d
Worcestershire 312 and 314-7 (Waite 66*, Hose 52, Lategan 49, Abbas 2-31, Andersson 2-42, Aitchison 2-65)
Match drawn
Somewhat like the Big Bad Wolf, Derbyshire huffed and puffed throughout the final day, bowling with great persistence and no little skill, yet couldn't blow down the resilient Worcestershire house and eventually had to settle for a draw.
The visiting batters showed commendable concentration and a willingness to fight for their cause. At the end of it all, there were insufficient demons in the pitch to offer anything other than gentle help to a willing home attack. It got no better for Derbyshire than a wicket with the first ball of the day, quickly followed by another for Ben Aitchison. I thought he bowled splendidly in this match and lost little in comparison to Mohammad Abbas, who himself bowled quite beautifully in the second innings. Credit also to Martin Andersson, who followed his double century with some intelligent bowling today.
There was also a very impressive, controlled spell by Shoaib Bashir, who will have benefited from a lengthy bowl in the afternoon and evening. He is a very watchable cricketer and I suspect a few young Derbyshire supporters will be copying his run-up and action before the summer is out.
There was a glimmer of hope for Derbyshire when Adam Hose was dismissed with still fifty overs of the game remaining, but Waite - an admirable cricketer - and Brookes dug in to prevent any further alarms. The latter did especially well to subjugate his natural, aggressive game and used up 123 balls for his 34, while Waite followed intelligent bowling with a priceless unbeaten 66 from 141 deliveries of resistance
There were a few moral victories, some edges and a number of false strokes, but the players shook hands as shadows lengthened in the sunshine and there were fielders around the bat. Not a bad start to a cricket season and an excellent advert for red ball county cricket
It is frustrating that a very good pitch, one that was probably perfect for international cricket, didn't break up a little more on the fourth day. Yet the new ECB guidelines on what constitutes a pitch of appropriate standard will need to be carefully observed.
Any pitch rated "below average" in this year's County Championship will result in the home side being awarded zero points from the fixture, regardless of the match result.
A "below average" pitch is the fourth of six ratings that can be attributed to a surface in the County Championship, above "poor" and "unfit".
Yet the county can be proud of the start that they have made to the cricket season. They controlled this game from start to finish and if they apply themselves similarly throughout the summer, they will enjoy their share of success.
Both Abbas and Bashir look to be a considerable enhancement on the options available last year, while the batting unit carried on in similar vein to 2025. When one considers that the talents of Wayne Madsen will soon be added to the squad, we should be a match for most sides in red ball cricket this summer.
In closing today, a few words about Harry Came. He took on the captaincy for the first time and I felt he did a very good job. He set the tone with the bat on the first morning, then switched his bowlers and set intelligent fields for the remainder of the game, as well as setting the standard in the field. He could not have done more to force victory and can feel proud of his efforts tonight.
A positive start. Lots of good things to take away into the red ball game.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased for those that stuck the whole game out that it was far warmer today.
Hats off to those who were wrapped up well when it looked very, very chilly.
Andy
The main event in the Executive Lounge today was a chicken " burger", with potato shards, salad and a slice of cheese. Had it been served to me lukewarm anywhere else on the ground, I'd have sent it back. Appalling! C'mon Derbyshire...
ReplyDeleteI have allowed it this time, but if you are going to be critical, please use a name. Otherwise I will reserve the right not to publish
DeleteReally good start to the Championship with lots of positives. It’s set a nice tone going into the Lancashire game. A few teams already look strong—Lancashire, Durham, Middlesex and Derbyshire.
DeleteI wouldn’t rush Madsen back, maybe aim for the Northampton game in May. We’ve got enough depth in the squad.
Overall, a positive and exciting start to the season. Anderson vs Abbas will be great to see who comes out top.
The ECB really are doing their best to wreck what’s left of the first class game in this country, the idea of uniform pitches isn’t a new one it was tried and failed as far back as 1990 all it ended up doing was turning every playing square in the CC into a bowlers graveyard
DeleteSadly I feel that drawn matches will just be the norm now due to the fine batting tracks up and down the country. Was a fine effort by the Derbyshire bowlers to take 17 wickets overall but batting never looked difficult at all. Promising signs though in that first game, well done lads
ReplyDeleteA very encouraging start which showed the depth of the capabilities within the squad .Optimistic for the season considering we have Madsen,Moore ,Haydon & Morley in reserve .
ReplyDeleteI don't mind. I didn't leave my name off deliberately. Steve H
ReplyDeleteWe tried, but Worcestershire dug in, and all credit to them. Nevertheless, a good start to the season. Lots of positives.

A fine match, Worcs should take some credit for batting it out, as I think we look as strong across the line up at any time in recent years. Excellent captaincy throughout from Came. Call me paranoid, but the ECB pitch grading thing is a bit worrying. Im sure that someone in there is pushing for artificial surfaces at first class level. The game would lose so much if it ever happened. Anyway, onward and upward, hopefully we can achieve enough to withstand any loss of momentum when the Slog begins.
ReplyDeleteExcellent advertisement for county championship cricket, enjoyed my day down there on Saturday and seeing Andersson reach his double century. Shame we couldn’t force the win but very encouraging signs despite little assistance from the hybrid pitch. A little strange that Reece only bowled one over in the second innings hopefully he hasn’t picked up an injury. Onto Lancashire when hopefully we can welcome Wayne back.
ReplyDeleteHow can it be an excellent advertisement for the county championship when it wasn’t a contest between bat and ball, it has to be a massive concern that even with the bowling attack Derbyshire had they couldn’t get twenty wickets in a match in April in four days with very limited interruptions at Derby
DeleteI thought we played well. I think people forget it used to be us on the back foot, every game. I'm expecting a tough challenge at Lancs away. I'd certainly take a draw. Kris
ReplyDelete... only those with very short memories! Given the forecast for the weekend, a draw looks a distinct possibility. Like you, I would settle for that.
DeleteSo if pitches improve and the ratings reflect that, pitches that were average before will now be below average... Genius. Dave.

ReplyDeleteseeking clarification regarding the availability of Allah Ghazanfar for Derbyshire during the upcoming Vitality Blast period. My understanding is that he has been signed to represent us from 12 June to 12 July 2026.
However, it has recently been reported social media that he is to join MI New York for the Major League Cricket tournament, which runs from 18 June to 18 July 2026. As these dates overlap significantly.
Does that mean more likely we sign Sufiyan Muqeem for whole competition?
Hi Gary, I have seen this myself and suspect that perhaps right and left hands are not in touch with one another. Perhaps it is someone expressing a wish to see him in America, that has snowballed.
DeleteI don't know, but if there is anything to report, I am sure the club will do so, before too long. If I hear anything, or see anything, I will post it on here
But like you, my understanding is that he is contracted to Derbyshire and therefore would not be available for the USA tournament
DeleteOut of interest...what did Shaoib Bashir do to get a fixed penalty point?
ReplyDeleteDave
Apparently it was deception towards the batsmen, he pretended to field the ball when in fact he didn’t.
DeleteFake throwing. Went to throw the ball in. To kid the batsmen but didn’t have the ball.
DeleteThanks for replying before I got a chance to, guys!
