Yet a Derbyshire player he remains, for which we all give thanks, until the end of 2028. That top five of Donald, Jewell, Montgomery, Madsen and Basra looks mighty dangerous for the Blast, with plenty of talent to follow.
I suspect that in due course he will be announced as captain for that competition. The responsibility could be the making of him and see him turn some of these glittering fifties into match-defining knocks, with greater frequency. He is an intelligent, articulate lad and my only concern would be if opening the batting, keeping wicket and skippering the side might not be too much. You don't know until you give it a try and I would be more surprised if he was NOT the captain in 2026.
Derbyshire's winter business has been conducted professionally and efficiently. At this stage we look to have a good, strong squad for next summer, regardless of the format.
Things are moving in the right direction. If we can nail those two key overseas places - and get the new bowling coach in - I fancy a very enjoyable summer for my 60th as a county supporter.
Great work, by everyone involved.
Excellent news, top player committed for another 2 years.
ReplyDeleteVery good news. Donald doesn't bludgeon the ball and isn't physically huge. What he does do is time it very well, very much like a golf shot, high and long. He's a good pair of hands in 4 day cricket and a decent T20 keeper. Kris
ReplyDeleteMore excellent news. I thought we would struggle to keep him, so I am very happy.

Good news for T20. The problem is, he's a one format player to go with a couple of others, in a small squad.
ReplyDeleteYes its a small squad but having one format players can be an advantage in that all the players apart from maybe the youngsters have a good idea of what their role is in the various teams and have a reasonable expectation of playing in those formats. I also think that most of the experienced players could play in other formats should there be injuries or players are out of form. Martin
DeleteDonald, Reece, Morley, Brown, Whiteley and Dal are mainly 1 format players, although most have chipped in elsewhere. I'd expect Donald to play some 4 dayers, it's not even out of the question he could start as an opener, to replace Lloyd. Kris
ReplyDeleteWhat would that mean for Came?
DeleteCame will open in 4 day cricket, in my opinion.
DeleteCan we really afford to carry a one format player, and a one trick pony at that ? Teams will have worked him out now, and he’ll be opening against spinners next season.
ReplyDeleteI'd expect the top 6 for the first champo game to be Donald Jewell Came Madsen Montgomery Reece, barring injuries. I don't see Reece opening the batting and bowling. It could be flexible though, if we bat first. Kris
ReplyDeletePersonally think Came and Donald are competing for one place. Don't forget Guest, Andersson and Dal, before we get to bowlers! Might be Andersson and Dal are competing for a place too. Good to have that competition!
DeleteCan’t see that we can play Donald AND Came as we need to accommodate Guest somewhere in CC. Straight shoot out between those up the order and then same between Dal and Andersson for number 7. Dal needs to improve his batting and MA his bowling. With a good overseas pace bowler a strong team on paper but how many times have we thought this!
DeletePaul
To answer your question, Paul, many many times! However, it so much depends on who we manage to land as that crucial overseas Pace bowler
DeleteBarring injuries, I would expect Reece and Jewell to open in the championship. I agree that Donald and Came are competing for the same spot. I wouldn't expect Reece to be opening the bowling all the time.
DeleteBut the great thing about Reece opening the bowling, is that he offers a different angle, assuming our overseas seamer is a right armer
DeleteAnd Basra and Wagstaff too. Of course things never plan out as expected, due to form, injuries and personal issues. Kris
ReplyDeleteFantastic news. I was convinced we’d lose him. Quality player and it’s great that he’s signed such a long contract!

Brilliant 3 more years of Nye

It's all about opinions, but I thought we were top heavy with all rounders in the team. I also think Came can sometimes get bogged down in the first hour, against the new ball. Donald would give us impetus. I don't see why Guest can't revert to the traditional number 7, keeper role. So my side would be;
ReplyDeleteDonald
Jewell
Came
Madsen
Montgomery
Reece
Guest
Dal / Andersson
Chappell / Moore / Haydon / Morley
Aitchison
Overseas
No Basra? Grant from Telford
DeleteHis and MA'S side, the mighty Ajman Titans, have just won their fourth game on the trot. Donald will be a little disappointed with his innings at a strike rate of only 160, though!
ReplyDeleteThey have recruited well, Jasper.
DeleteDonald, Hales, Rossouw, Smeed, Moeen Ali is a terrific top 5 for that format. Zaman Khan is doing well for them, too!
Yes I noticed Zaman Khan was in their team too. Not beyond the realms of possibility he could be arrowing his yorkers in at Derby in the T20 next season?
DeleteNot beyond possibility, but I think they will want a spinner, personally
DeleteBest bit of winter news so far. Chapel Guy.
