Middlesex v Derbyshire day one

I am not going to spend too much time on today, because I only saw the first session, before I went out with my wife and daughter for the afternoon.

At that point Derbyshire, were progressing serenely, although the movement obtained by Higgins and Roland-Jones suggested that batting may not continue to be straightforward.

I will leave you to fill in what happened after the excellent stand between Came and Jewell, which left Caleb four runs short of a thousand first-class runs for the summer with an innings to go.

Meanwhile at Denby, the Seconds were all out for 320, with Savin Perera, who has been around a few county second teams and plays with SACA, making an unbeaten 160 and carrying his bat in a wonderful effort. Yusaf bin Naeem made 47 and McLoughlin took 4-67 for Northamptonshire

They were 66-2 at the close with George Bartlett unbeaten on 33 after Potts and Stewart took an early wicket each.

More from me tomorrow, when we will see if we can make early inroads at Lord's and Denby

Now, over to you!

  1. The usual collapse after a decent start. The tail wagged a bit. Just a mention regarding the live stream. It was excellent, like watching on a portable tv in HD. I would think with the weather forecast, a draw is the most likely outcome. Looking forward to seeing how Haydon does on this wicket, have a feeling it might suit him. Grant from Telford

    1. Yes, a draw the most likely outcome. Promotion is a pipe dream, but we already knew that.

The stream was excellent. The best I've seen.

  2. I wonder if our season could collapse entirely and we finish 2nd bottom (beating only Kent in the table) I personally think that is as realistic as the opposite outcome of finishing 2nd. It's been a difficult season for us and our one day cricket was as bad as I can remember. Nye provided a scattering of T20 moments to remember and Rory Haydon was a positive in the 50 over stuff. Early on in the 4 day game we did well but that is long gone. I would say the rating for the season was 2/10. We hear there is no wholesale clearcut on the cards so I am not optimistic for 2026 either. Oh well we are long suffering I suppose but I am getting a bit long in the tooth to support it as regularly as I normally would (even though I am a life member)

  3. Cheer up John. I thought we played ok today, on a challenging surface, against very good bowling. Kris

  4. Not sure why Reece opened when Came and Jewell have been doing so well.I thin k 4/10 is about right John!Roland-Jones took 6fer today how many times have our bowlers done that this season.Topspinner

  5. I thought the team selection was again hard to fathom out. Surely Basra should have played. Do we really need 6 seamers if we do it would suggest you are expecting the other team to score north of 400. Reece Dal and Andersson are too similar for all 3 to play. Reece is easily the best all rounder ofthe 3 so only one from the other 2 should be included. I thought the pitch looked pretty good for batting on and we are at least 100 runs short but time will tell. If we lose or draw this surely Basra Potts Hawkins and maybe Wagstaffe have got to play in the final couple of games or has the MA project been put off for another season at least

    1. Absolutely right, Ian. We don't need 3 medium pace bowlers in the team and Reece is clearly the better bowler and batsman in our squad so his place should always be assured when he is fit. I think there is a place in our side for Basra or Donald or perhaps both. The first day's play was the all too familiar story. A good start, a middle order collapse, some runs from down the order and a total well below par. I can't see us getting anything out of this match. And as has been mentioned already, when did one of our bowlers last take six wickets in an innings as Roland Jones has done to us? We can but hope that Rory Hayden and Harry Moore will be the future.

  6. I was the same, watched the first session with optimism, could only check in occasionally across the afternoon too see the carnage increase each time.

The disappointment started when Amrit Basra wasn't in the team though.

  7. I was at Lords for part of the morning session and part of the afternoon session. When Jewell and Came went in quick succession, I said to my wife (who is Mexican and finds cricket hard to understand), that it was odds on instead of getting 400 or more Derbyshire would collapse and not reach 300. I was right. It has happened so many times, and in all formats. For some reason, in so many games we don't have the collective winning mentality.
