Signing rumours

It was interesting to read today, thanks to Dean and Simon, that Derbyshire 'have led the pursuit of Josh de Caires' of Middlesex in recent weeks.

This comes from the cricket correspondent of The Mail, Richard Gibson, who also said that the club 'recently moved' for Somerset batter, Sean Dickson.

I understand and fully support the first. De Caires, the son of former Lancashire and England player Mike Atherton, has struggled for opportunity at Middlesex, although recently has been restored to opening the batting to good effect. He may be loathe to leave London, but could perhaps be persuaded by the success of his former team mate, Martin Andersson. He has been a great success since moving to what he has called a 'real family club'.

A more than useful off spinner as well, there is a lot of logic to the pursuit - and would be to the signing if it happened. At 23 he is a player with room to improve, wherever his future lies. The same article says that his father, who has never appeared to be a fan of ours, plays no part in his son's career, so we will see what happens on that one.

As for Dickson, I am a little puzzled. He has been a decent player and scored good runs for both Kent and Somerset, but at 34 next month he doesn't fit with the idea of a more youthful Derbyshire side. I had pretty much pencilled in a top six of Donald, Jewell, Montgomery, Madsen, Basra and Andersson for the Blast next year, quite possibly with Whiteley to follow.

Having averaged 35 and scored at 150 for Somerset this year in The Blast, the main merit in Dickson would be if we were bringing in two overseas bowlers for T20 and keeping Caleb Jewell for the red ball and One-Day Cup. Which may be the grand plan, of course...

The same article also said that Rocky Flintoff, whose manager is his mother, may need to leave Lancashire for first team opportunities. At 17 he is a real talent, but I would have thought his chances of early and regular senior cricket would come elsewhere. Lancashire like to bring in established players and there are a lot in front of him at the club.

With Mickey Arthur and Freddie Flintoff working together at the Northern Superchargers, perhaps that sort of discussion might have taken place, who knows? The club's image has changed for the better with the arrival of a name international coach and Lancashire has been a fine source for us in recent years.

Of course there is a balancing act.

What we don't want is a second team full of surplus senior players who then block opportunity for the talent coming through the Pathway. I am sure that the coaching staff feel the same. It is why I am broadly against single-format contracts, because players need time in the middle, even if it is not in the red ball first eleven.

Which has put the thought in my head that maybe the winter will see the departure of a player (or players) who perhaps have opportunities outside of the game.

Such chances to move into other roles present themselves at different times and for some, a career that offers long-term stability might be a better option than a remaining year on a contract. With county cricket a stressful and challenging career, it would be understandable, at least to me.

No one expected Harold Rhodes to take up a career outside of the county game when he left for a career in the brewing industry at the age of just 33. Harold probably had a few hundred wickets left in him, but long-term planning made sense. Just as it did for Chris Armishaw, who looked a terrific bowling prospect but realised the lure of a long term better income in banking was strong.

Gloucestershire recently lost Chris Dent to a career outside of the game, because of his struggles with anxiety. Life is short and no job is worth the stress of anything that makes it more challenging. While the opportunity to play cricket and be paid for it sounds wonderful, the pressure of having to perform and having your failures scrutinised cannot be easy. Especially when you are struggling to process the challenges yourself.

Nor can you ignore the possibility of someone else wanting to buy out the final year of a player's contract, as Essex did with Matt Critchley. Like it or not, such machinations are part of the game now. Personal circumstances also come into it, as we saw when Fynn Hudson-Prentice left to move back down south and be nearer his family.

It would explain our interest in various players, because the available playing budget would then be bigger. That we need additional support for the attack is clear. A hill that I will stand (but hopefully not die) on is my previous assertion that we need a seamer for early and spinner for late season from overseas, together with two overseas bowlers in the T20.

Such team improvements, including offering opportunity to the best of the Pathway, can only come about if the available budget is stretched in one of the above ways.

The coming weeks will no doubt shed light on things.

  1. I read on the BBC website 31July that all counties have received an initial payment of £400k from the Hundred pot and this can be spent however each club chooses. If this is true it would ease/remove any pressure on our playing budget

  2. Would rather we prioritised signing Basra first, before he gets snapped up by another County.

Totally agree with you Steve. De Ceaires would be a fabulous signing if he could be persuaded to maybe take a bit of a pay cut and move from London. He’s a very good all round cricketer. Dickson on the other hand would be a awful signing. He’s done nothing at Somerset and the fact they now prefer to open with 2 tailenders says it all

Fully agree. A hard 'no' to Dickson from me.

  4. I would be surprised if Alex Thomson was around in 2026. That is a shame, as he is a decent cricketer. However, after 5 seasons and opportunities limited this year, I feel Alex may be moving on. Kris

  5. I think Dickson would be an upgrade on Whiteley given he's slightly younger and has been more reliable in the white ball finisher role. Also suspect in D2 he'd go well enough in red ball.

Both are yesterday's men though and would prefer we backed Basra for that hitting role and the likes of Wagstaff to get opportunities.

De Caires could be a good signing though, he's talented. The players we'll need to replace based on age or already retiring or be thinking about replacing over the next couple seasons:

Reece - All rounder who opens batting
    Madsen - Run machine
    Whiteley - White ball finisher
Patel - T20 spin all rounder
    Lloyd - Opening bat
    Thomson - Spinner

Haydon, a fully fit Aitchison and a returning Moore will seriously bolster the attack so I'm not too worried there. I suspect Green and Stewart aren't too far away either. Montgomery is our best bet to complement and then take over Madsen's role and Basra looks to be a hitter.

De Caires would be an upgrade on Lloyd and cover the top order as well as being a spin options to join Hawkins in supporting Morley.

    1. Good post, Hamez. It's a case of getting other overseas roles right and de Caires would seem an obvious younger upgrade on Lloyd/Thomson

Fans will rest easier if we engage Haydon and Basra...

    2. I’m not sure if Josh D-C’s father would be very happy about his son joining Derbyshire given his hatred of Derbyshire and the fact that it’s still a first class club

    3. As I said, KJB he doesn't get involved in his lad's career. Might be that a move and regular cricket, even for 3 years, is the making of him. Or he could stay at Middlesex, where he batted well today

  6. I would be disappointed if we signed a number of players from other counties if this meant that talent of the required standard from the second XI was not being utilised.
We also seem to have limited room for manoeuvre this year as some of the players who have performed less well are contracted into next year.
Also as far as the Championship goes I would have thought there was greater need to improve the bowling rather than the batting, though I can see that getting the right players in may be difficult.
I am sure I read somewhere that the pot of money from the hundred cannot be spent on players salaries, but needs to be for things like ground improvements, cricket centres etc. Martin

  7. Just to clarify, counties can take their initial £400,000 as a lump sum, or opt for a payment plan. They can spend this portion of the Hundred money as they see fit.

Bigger windfalls are due at a later date. The seven counties that host Hundred teams, plus the Marylebone Cricket Club, will receive around £18m, and the 11 non-hosts are in line for more than £24m.

The ECB has imposed "guardrails" on how this money can be spent, and counties will have to make applications for its release.

  8. Thoughts by PJS

I agree entirely with your T20 batting lineup but how do you reconcile that with your wish for two O/S bowlers in the same competition if we have retained Jewell?

I want to see us adopt a simple rule for T20 - win toss, Bat! Chasing has proven an additional [unwelcome] pressure that could be avoided.

I have posted previously that our top order of 7 batters need to rotate around a pair that is set-up as one anchor and one 'biffer' until the last 5 overs [when its all bats blazing to boundary].

Opening with Donald & Jewell - clearly Donald is the 'biffer' in the Powerplay, but should [as he will occasionally] get out in the first 5 overs I would immediately replace him with Chappell who has had a very good season with the bat and knows where the boundary is... our 'shock' trooper, if you like, and 'expendable' [his brief is to not be reckless but play his natural game]

Outside of the Powerplay my anchor/biffa strategy only requires the batsmen to be keenly aware of which role they are assigned and come into bat according to which role has just been dismissed.

    Jewell [a]
    Donald[b]
    Montgomery[b]
    Madsen[a]
    Basra[b]
    Andersson[a]
    7th 'X' is a Biffa

There is enough experience among that seven to make sure at least one of them is there at the last phase of the game.

Aitchinson & Brown will still be here and Moore will hopefully return from injury but I convinced we are short of a top class fast bowler. I thought Ghazanfor played his role very well [but possibly the worst fielder I have ever seen - and that's including my classmate Tom - circa '79] but I would welcome him back, so:

    8 - Chappell
    Ghazanfor
    Aitchinson/Moore
    Brown/Haydon/NEW - top class fast

Andersson is more than reliable as a second string bowler and should have been trusted with 4 overs. [Another baffling omission from this years approach]. Given Montgomery & Basra can both contribute if really necessary I would only tinker with them immediately a lower order batter comes to the crease and has no time to get their eye-in.

The bowling has to be much tighter next year, fielding far more disciplined. There is a very good team in this Xl it needs the right leadership and tactics...

    1. Good comment, but slas I said in the piece, I would keep Jewell for red ball and 50 overs and have two overseas bowlers/all rounders for T20, with Jewell as back up in case of injury

I don't expect we will get Ghazanfar next year. The money sides will have seen what he can do and his agent will understandably cash in on his ability. Like it or not, we cannot compete

  9. Follow-up by PJS...

Sorry Peakfan, I should have paid more attention to your comments about Jewell!

Surely Ghazanfar [forgive my previous spelling] will recognise the added value of working with such a great coach [no laughing at the back there] as MA and with a little extra of the 'funds' due from the 'Hundred' we could match most others. It's not for the whole season either [he can make his fortune elsewhere with franchise] but I am sure Derbyshire hospitality left a good impression on the young man for a return.

Of course, I mean 'biffer' [not the waste management company, Biffa] and I am not giving license to use fashionable ramps & reverses in a reckless manner.

Anyway, I am trying to look forward positively, cheers!

    1. It depends on his international commitments and it will always depend on finance. I wouldn't want to break the bank and I don't think we will. I suppose our ideal would be him coming back and Zaman Khan when he played for us last time. Or Lockie Ferguson perhaps...

Although in my defence you did write you'd 'pencilled in a top six of Donald, Jewell, Montgomery, Madsen, Basra and Andersson for the Blast next year, quite possibly with Whiteley to follow...'

So I ran off into the sunset thinking; OK, batting lineup sorted, but how, Sir, can we now include two O/S bowlers ;)

    Who'd be a cricket selector!

    1. Of course, if they did sign Dickson to open with Donald...problem solved. But like I said, balancing act to be done in not filling up the twos with senior players on senior wages needing a hit all the time

  11. We are clearly at a point where change and planning for the future are necessary. The possible signing of De Caires looks sensible as a young player with potential. However my main concern, apart from keeping hold of our own young talent (Basra, Haydon, Hawkins), is the seam attack. None of the names which have surfaced so far are seamers, an area in which we have been weak this season. It worries me that we may concentrate on finding overseas fast bowlers at (literally) any price, whereas our recent experience has not been great (are overseas bowlers with an average in the mid-30s any better than we have?). On that point, you reported Steve that Gloucestershire had signed Will Williams (who is 32 but has very good figures - 23.5 as 1st class average). I hope that we are aware of such similar "local" opportunities instead of just thinking of overseas as best.

    1. That's a fair comment Adrian. Looking at the list of seam bowlers out of contract, there are not many that excite me and are a massive improvement on what we have.

We do need a bowler or two, but I would rather try Haydon and see what he has than be the 3rd or 4th county for someone wanting a last payday.

And I agree, the overseas bowler has to be a major enhancement or what is the point?

    2. Struggling to take 20 wickets and lacking quality seam bowlers seems to be a common theme across the county game. So not sure we’d have much luck trying to find a proven player who's available. Giving Rory Haydon a go and with hopefully a fully fit Harry Moore next season is the best option I think.

I like the seam for the first half and spin for the second half option with the overseas player.

  12. Not sure where to ask this Steve so I'll put it here.

What has happened with Sam Connors? I have only noticed him named in a Durham XI once all season.

    1. He has been injured Dave. Missed the start of the season and has only played second team recently. Their coach was saying this morning on the stream that they were trying to work out how to get him back in the side, without the need to bowl ten overs

    2. Thanks for that.

  13. We are going to need a leg spinner in T20 cricket. Wagstaff goes for 8 an over in his limited games so far. Pretty decent. Sides that do well in T20 cricket, generally have a leggie. Mckiernan is remembered.for Somerset away, but we haven't replaced his wicket taking ability. Leg spinners take wickets in T20 cricket. Kris

    1. They do, Kris. I agree re Mattie, good player. I thought Ghazanfar would bowl more leggies than he did, but seemed to keep an occasional one that went the other way as a surprise element, rather than regular. Fine bowler though, pleasure to watch him. Just hope he improves that fielding...

  14. My aim would be give 3 year deals to Basra, Haydon, Hawkins and extend Moore and B Yusaf Bin Naeem deals. We need to really believe in pathway focus on it. We have got everything in place for this to work. When comes to red ball block we should be playing Basra and Haydon. The past we been far to risk adverse and been getting beat still. I think we got 2 coaches that can develop players in Smit and Arthur that could be the secret ingredient to success. I would extend both there deals

I think De Caries deal would be good idea. London to Derby maybe hard move.

I think we need look at getting overseas that will take wicket 40/50 wickets red ball. Then look different oversea that allrounder for T20. Mickey has the contacts and maybe we have to increase budget for bowlers

  15. As you mention careers outside of cricket, I’m told that Anuj Dal is soon to relocate to UAE and a burgeoning career in financial services and that David Lloyd has hung up his boots for personal reasons.
These moves will free up some money for new signings without greatly impacting on squad strength.
