Weekend thoughts

Before I get into my weekend thoughts, a point of clarification on Mitch Wagstaff

I had it in my head that his contract was up at the end of this summer, when in fact his deal does not expire until the end of 2026.

This, of course makes it all the more important that he's given the opportunity to show what he can do, starting with the Metro Bank One Day Cup.

For me, it poses the question why he didn't play last night and get some useful experience. It would have been more beneficial, I think, than Alex Thomson playing, someone we know all about. There is an opportunity for Mitch to become a decent county all rounder, perhaps making up a spin trio with Jack Morley and Joe Hawkins that has considerable potential. Or a bat of quality who can twirl a few overs when needed.

Therein lies one of the contradictions that frustrates with Mickey Arthur. He talks about wasting time and not offering opportunity, then, when that opportunity presents itself, does nothing about it.

He also told us recently that all of the players were better than they were last year. Really? The figures and performances do not suggest so in the T20 and we must hope that a return to red ball brings with it a return to form for those most badly needing it.

I am obviously not inside the dressing room, but I would think such things must be very frustrating. Likewise, the team selections that have often made no sense, rigid bowling orders that don't seem to consider match ups and batting orders that failed to suggest a steady hand on the tiller.

I know I am repeating myself, but why does Harry Came not play, then be seen as our number three in T20, despite only scoring at a run a ball? Same with Alex Thomson, who goes from not playing to opening the bowling. Or Pat Brown, who was picked but bowled only one over? Or Martin Andersson, who only ever bowls two overs, yet is the most economical seamer? And for good measure, never had an established place or role in the batting order. See also Ross Whiteley...

Nick Potts starts the first match, bowls one over and is never seen again. Yet that is one more over than Mitch Wagstaff enjoyed in the competition. I haven't even mentioned Brooke Guest, who has been so oddly omitted. There appears no logic to selection.

Mickey Arthur needs the restorative power of red ball cricket to save the season. He can do himself favours by giving opportunity in the Metro Bank One Day Cup, of course. I might be on my own, but if we saw promising performances from a few young players in that competition, I could handle defeats much better.

I'm not suggesting throwing in all of the academy players, but a nice balance would be good to see. How about this side?

Jewell
Wagstaff
Came
Basra
Guest
Reece/Lloyd
Dal/Andersson
Tickner
Aitchison
Haydon
Hawkins/Morley

Let's give Zak Chappell a breather for the four-day cricket and if they want to keep Luis Reece fit for it, David Lloyd could play. But that is a decent side which offers valuable experience to players who could be here long-term. It would ask a lot of Hawkins to play every match, but giving him even half of them would test his mettle.

Thoughts?

  1. Commentary last night (thought Fletch and Greg Cork were an excellent combination) suggested Tickner would be missing 50 over to spend some time with his wife back in New Zealand but would be available for remaining County Championship games at end of season.

    1. As we were chatting I only had the picture up, David. If that's true then the case for youngsters becomes more compelling and a space opens up. Play 3 from 4 all rounders and see how it goes

  2. I agree with giving some of the youngsters a go in the Metro. But they need to be given enough games and allowed to make mistakes. We can't expect them to be racking up runs or taking wickets from the outset. They need time to adjust to first team cricket.

  3. Cannot understand why Dal does not get a chance in the T20 - very good fielder, gets runs and wickets!!

    1. He's never been seen as a T20 player as he isn't a big hitter. But you don't need total power to be effective and he will have a key role in 50 overs cricket, I am sure.

  4. Lots of common sense there Peakfan.
You would make a better head of cricket than MA!
Maybe a bit cheaper to ?

  5. If Tickner misses the 50 over cup it will confirm the signing as a big negative for me. Didn’t play at all in the T20 and has missed games in the CC including our two wins so as yet hasn’t won a game in Derbyshire colours. I realise that isn’t all his fault but surely far more is expected from your overseas bowler ?

Totally agree with your team for the 50 over comp and with other people on here about you possibly being a better manager then quite a few people in charge of professional cricket clubs at the moment. I don’t watch t20 myself but get the feeling with so many t20 competition’s all over the world once it’s fairly obvious a team can’t qualify for the next stages most players completely lose interest and just go through the motions and pick up their wages

  9. I agree Steve that we need to bed a few of the youngsters into the team but can't believe you've left Wayne Madsen out. There is no one better to gee them on.

  11. I feel that development of the team has a pattern over the Mickey Arthur era. The likes Masood, Du plooy, Harry Came, Andersson, Madsen have continued to be consistent in there form cricket over Micky Arthur era. The bowling shows very different picture. Over this last 4 years which bowlers have developed? You could put argument for Dal. Our main bowling unit have struggled consistently. The Wicket at Derby I believe is now one of best country. At the start of Mickey era the wicket was aimed “Test standard” but when lots batting records broken and most boring matches red ball you could imagine. We had to change direction with the wicket. The bowlers now have a proper wicket to bowl on. We have had loss Sam Conners and George Scrimshaw. I just seeing as club do we need to change direction with coaches. I think Shazad still very young and maybe benefit from different environment. I just don’t feel this working for the club. If you compare him to Kirby period 2018 - 2019 he helped develop Reece into a bowler and unit was lot more consistent we prehaps had lot better bowling unit at that time. They’re maybe lots behind scene we all unaware. This comment purely player development. I really hope Shazad has successful coaching career. I think time for a change.
