Derbyshire v Kent day two

Derbyshire 587-5 (Jewell 232, Madsen 100, Came 89, Reece 50*, Leaning 2-85)

Kent 210-3 (Compton 105*, Dal 2-34)

Derbyshire lead by 377 runs

Derbyshire did brilliantly to compile a mammoth first innings total of 587-5 declared today, largely on the back of a career-best 232 by Caleb Jewell and a century by Wayne Madsen.

They then chipped away at the Kent innings, taking three wickets by the close of play.

Yet I cannot see a positive result in this game, on a pitch that remains a very good one for batting. Ben Compton looked in fine fettle for the visitors and reached an excellent century by the close and his wicket will be the crucial one in determining whether Derbyshire can enforce the follow-on. Jack Leaning is another, a player with what my memory suggests is a good record against us, for first Yorkshire and now Kent. It will be an important first session tomorrow, weather permitting.

Earlier today, Jewell and Madsen added 176 for the third wicket, both batting beautifully and enjoying the conditions and a limited Kent attack after Jake Ball limped off with what looked like an abdominal injury. Wayne was at his imperious best and the century never seemed in doubt after he overcame a little early innings sketchiness.

As for Jewell, he went on to his highest-ever score and looked a player of the highest class in doing so. He carried out his role to perfection and could hardly have played better than this. After Madsen holed out to long on, Luis Reece played a breezy innings on his return to the side, while Martin Andersson hit four sixes in his unbeaten 31 from just 17 deliveries.

Anuj Dal took two quick wickets in an inspired late spell, but digging out another seventeen looks like a tall order, especially with interruptions likely on the final day.

Perhaps they should cling to the words of Kent coach Adam Hollioake, speaking on his club's feed earlier. He felt it was a very good toss to win and that the pitch was likely to deteriorate. If the worst happened and the game ends in a draw, the points would almost certainly keep Derbyshire in second place, going into the mid-season red ball break.

But early wickets tomorrow could change the complexion of things.

We live in hope.

Postscript: in closing, KJB Loyal asked earlier if I thought the record innings of 274 by George Davidson would ever be broken. There was an opportunity today, but it didn't happen.

I think it will take a lot of doing. It was a different game then and the Derbyshire innings of 577 in 1896 took 271 five-ball overs. There was not enough time for Lancashire to be bowled out twice, even though they faced 187 overs themselves over two innings in a three-day match...

It will take some beating and I would be surprised if it happened in my lifetime. Given modern over rates, it would need someone in prime form to do it, or a match situation where a draw was the best and only outcome.

  1. We just need to sign Sam Northeast. Triple hundreds are his stock-in-trade 😏

  2. Derbyshire once signed a batsman who had just scored a test match triple century only to discover he was allergic to grass

    1. Indeed, and Lawrence Rowe never managed more than 94 (on debut) for us...the one that got away...

Another good day. Although like you say a win does look a little unlikely. Even if we did enforce a follow on its still likely the bowler’s will be too tired to get another 10 quickly enough.

  4. Not that long ago thst David Lloyd scored a triple century against us!

  5. Regarding Lawrence Rowe someone who was a member at the time told me years later that 1974 was a wet miserable summer add to that the uncovered bowler friendly pitches it’s hardly surprising that he struggled for runs

  6. It was an incredibly wet summer. IIRC Hampshire lost out on the championship when their last game was abandoned without a ball being bowled, and they got nil points and missed out by three. That sort of summed up the season.

  7. And yet, as he says in his forthcoming biography, he wasn't a total failure for a young man who had played little outside the Caribbean. 1500 runs in all formats. Lots of starts, just never carried on. Always looked classy, but was unlucky, injury prone and allergic...

  8. 797 for 8 so far.
    Who'd be a bowler?

  9. Jewell showed impressive concentration and restraint in his marvellous and classy innings. He rarely looked in danger of getting out.

It was good to see Madsen add to his century collection. He's such a remarkable player.

Looking ahead to the T20, I was delighted to see Andersson going big. He should add power to our batting.

  10. A great batting performance from Derbyshire. Jewell looked top class. However, questions must be asked about the pitch which has not been conducive to a competitive game so far. Maybe it will give more assistance to the bowlers today and tomorrow - let’s hope so.

We should take great confidence from the season so far. We certainly look better than Kent, including in the bowling department - I fully understand the doubts as to whether we can take 20 wickets, especially in these conditions, but our bowling attack does look stronger than theirs, especially now they’re down to three frontline bowlers. And don’t forget that we are missing Tickner, Aitchison and Moore also.

A "winning” draw is the probable result but if we can make inroads this morning who knows ..

    Allez Derbyshire

  11. The season start has been very positive. Who would have thought seven county matches could be completed before June and with barely an hour lost to the weather! [One benefit of the 'climate crisis']

Batting looks much more resilient than in recent times. The addition of Jewell & Andersson will surely benefit all forms of the game. I do think we should give Wagstaff a runout at some point, 'resting' someone in the meanwhile.

As others have noted its expecting a lot of the current bowling to get 20 wickets. If anything is needed in recruitment a strike bowler from MA's contacts in the second part of the season as a push for promotion might be considered.

The T20 line up - as I always urge - should be fluid with an 'anchor' and a 'biffer' pairing for the top order. Patel should be 'encouraged' to bat much further down the order. I heard that Donald will be playing this weekend for 'Wales' so hopefully any shoulder issue has been resolved.
