The only other Derbyshire to score runs was Savin Perera, who made a good fifty before being undone by one that kept low. Some might remember him playing for the South Asian Cricket Academy at the start of the summer and looking an organised bat. It is nice to see him being given an opportunity, so it is up to him what he makes of it from here.
But Whiteley showed his talent and his power, which will obviously come into prominence in T20 and 50 over cricket, but could easily do a job in the longer form, based on what I saw today.
I am always wary of putting too much on second team performances, but Ross looked in good fettle and he did what none of the first team have done this season and went on to three figures. Perhaps he will be in contention for the Sussex game, as will Daryn Dupavillon, who will arrive from South Africa in time for that one.
So as we go into the game against Yorkshire at Headingley tomorrow, the top six know that they are under pressure to perform. We know they
can do it, as they have done so in the past, but it would be nice to see them show their best games against the white rose county over the next four days.
Zak Chappell is back, at the expense of Sam Conners (groin issue) and the final selection would appear to be between going with two spinners or the extra seamer. That being the case, Jack Morley and Pat Brown would appear to be competing for one place in this twelve:
Came, Reece, Lloyd, Madsen, Guest, Donald, Dal, Thomson, Chappell, Tickner, Brown/Morley
There is no news as yet about the Yorkshire squad, but they have injury problems with three bowlers struggling - Fisher, Milnes and Edwards. It puts a lot of weight on Ben Coad, a very good bowler, but he is going to need support.
The batting is no problem. With Harry Brook and Joe Root available, their top five with Bean, Lyth and Shan Masood is very strong. Yet this is the sort of game where Derbyshire can come into their own. The talent is there, we just need to see it produced to the best of their ability.
There has been talk this week in the comments about Aneurin Donald, who I think looks a terrific player. Yet to some extent he is like a latter-day hero of mine, Chris Wilkins, because it is wonderful while it lasts, but you aren't sure how long that will be.
At 27, he needs to be looking to push an average just north of thirty towards the 35/40 mark. He has the game, he certainly has the strokes, but it is choosing the right ball to play them that is his problem. On his day, like Wilkins, you wouldn't want to miss a delivery.
The challenge he has is in making those special days are more common occurrence. If he can do that, in conjunction with the coaching team, he can be a very special player.
Sadly, the weather forecast does not suggest. We will get a win on the board in this one either. Tomorrow and Sunday look like fairly wet days and any possible results will need to arise because one side has had a nightmare or the two of them manufacture a finish.
We will see. Fingers and toes crossed...
My plan for the Yorkshire game would have been to extend the batting thus my selection would have been this. Came Reece Lloyd Madsen Guest Donald Lamb Dal Thompson Chappel Tickner. I would have wayne turn his arm over for ten overs if needed. If we can't bowl Yorkshire out with 5 seamers then why would we with. 6 ? For me at the moment Brown hasn't got it.With Alex batting 9 we have a longer tail and look much more solid. ( I would have kept Chappel away from Lady Bay )

I think Wayne's bowling days are done, Steve. I understand a shoulder injury precludes that, although he can obviously field and throw. Don't recall him bowling last year either
DeleteObvious mistake their I meant kept Matt Lamb away from Lady Bay.

Clearly, looking at the Yorkshire squad, this is a tall order. I am a big fan of Donald and think he will be good value for us. Whiteley's knock will make people stand up and notice. Could he be a handy number 8 for us in 4 daters? I think so...Kris
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm hoping, that after the first two games that we played, we will really go for it against Yorkshire, although, once again, rain might play a part (April is indeed the cruellest month, even though Chaucer was, of course, not talking about cricket). I was delighted to see Whiteley hit a rapid ton today, but, overall, the seconds got hammered by Notts, replicating, to some extent, the first team. We need to show the aggression Mickey has spoken about on the pitch, not just in front of a DCCC camera.
ReplyDeleteI shall be there tomorrow. Hoping to get play in for most of the day. Will be interesting with both teams having been hit and miss so far.
ReplyDeleteJust hoping the rain doesn’t ruin the four days and there is a result.
I'll hope to be proved wrong but unfortunately their top 5 vs our bowling looks a complete mismatch and it could be brutal.
ReplyDeleteI am pleased to see Chappell back though its a shame Conners is injured and is the one making way. Good as he will hopefully be in the Blast I'm not sure Brown offers enough in the four day game.
Our bowlers will hope for some assistance from the pitch and/or overheads, because things could get very messy otherwise with their top 5.
ReplyDeleteI'd agree that Donald can be destructive, however my impression at the moment is he may be another to add to our (too long) list of predominantly white ball players.
I really hope we at least contest this game, but rain might again be our friend.
It's ai n important game to today (weather permitting) because a poor performance from the lads will do two things 1 dent confidence severely and 2 put further daylight between us and the significant positions in the table.Having said that if I were coach I'd be telling the players to concentrate on performance and making the right decisions in a match situation. The points and table position are a consequence of good match cricket. For me given the average start we've had this is where Mickey needs to earn his money. Its vital he says the right things at the right time and to the right players. For example what do you say to Wayne.? Answer, absolutely nothing. My time would go into Donald without him being aware that I wasn't putting as much into some of the others. This may surprise a few but the other would be Dal, simply because dispite his success in my opinion he doesn't know how good he really is.This man is Mega talented and needs this regularly reinforced but not overdone. This where man management starts. Sport is played between the ears.
ReplyDeleteCOME ON DERBYSHIRE LETS DIG IN.

I'm at headingly watching the game and my man Dal has struck. There can obviously be only one reason for that, Micky has done as I said and told him how bloody good he is. Im a genius

I see it's another fine first day's play again, win the toss and make the wrong decision. Do we ever get anything right?
ReplyDeleteRight decision, but if you consistently drop 3/4 catches in the first session, you will always struggle.
DeleteDidn't get the bowling right either - see later!
While I have the greatest respect for David Lloyd as a batsman, as a captain I feel that as a captain he seems to be making the wrong decision constantly. I might be old fashioned but in my view winning the toss means batting first unless there are extreme circumstances
ReplyDelete, usually governed by the weather. Just a little early morning dampness in the atmosphere might mean putting the opposition in if we had a strong bowling attack. Quite frankly, ours is looking pretty feeble. Chasing leather and conceding a total of 4 or 5 hundred is bound to affect batters' morale and we are dismissed for a paltry total. It is happening now at Headingly. We are in a deep hole.
Derbyshire are looking straight down the barrel of Clint Eastwoods magnum 44, do we feel lucky.? Afraid not but David put the opposition in again which was clearly a mistake. If we can get them out for under 450 we'll be doing well from here.Perhaps David thinks the bowling is better than it's been so far or he's not yet confident in our batting.Still enjoying the day I always do no matter what it brings.Keeping going Derbyshire adverisity breeds Character so my old marathon Coach used to say to me when I was on really struggling past the 22 mile point. After all nothing is worth doing if it's ?easy. I fully realise supporters will thinking we've been on this No 9 bus before, and so we have my backside has left an imprint on the seat next to the door.I find it extremely difficult to come on here with no hope this may annoy people but what's the alternative give up.? Never.Id rather let my Anty Gerty kiss me.

If you choose to bowl in helpful conditions you have to set attacking fields and the bowlers must respond by bowling line and length. Neither happened. In the seventh over Dal was on with two slips and a gully and still no one in a catching position in front of the bat. Derbyshire's whole attitude reeked of a negative mindset, the very opposite of what the coach seems to be advocating in his interviews.
